I've never gotten technical about art (science major) but this kind of abstract illustration seems reminiscent of primitive, imaginative images that some of our cave dwelling ancestors painted.

not all paintings have direct meanings or show direct people/places/objects etc. if you explore art throughout centuries you will find that emotion and color schemes play a lot into these kind of paintings. there's a reason why jon does this obviously, but the fun part is not really knowing! it's up for your interpretation which is the best part of art in my opinion. look at jackson polluck he was a drunk asshole but that man could paint a beautiful undefined masterpiece.
