Anybody knows a way to be able to change the polygon's background color instead of making it invisible? I was using max to apply the OZ Racing logo on a rim I made, yet I could still mess with the rim's color and see the logo too. What's the freakin' way to do this into maya???
Staticenz, I really need to see an image to see what the issue is. It may be an issue of UV 0-1 borders (1 pixel row of texture can show up on geometry edges). It may also be the actual color channel of the texture having a white background...and a bleeding of that white around the edges of the alpha channel.
Good intro into transparency maps.. However, using this method gives a white border around the opaque part of the transparency. I could have sworn there was a node to add and tweak in Maya that eliminates that halo. I'm working on a project right now where I'm stuck with that white border... (antialiasing and feather is turned off in Photoshop). Any ideas?
@staticenz Sometimes I solve this by...checking the texture attributes in Maya and looking at the filtering type it's set to. Also, making sure the background color matches as close as possible to the visible part of the texture.
@cutpUK You can use this technique on any piece of geometry you like inside of Maya. It is a technique that fakes a more detailed object so you tend to this put to use on simple primitives like cubes or planes.
@cutpUK I'd really have to see what is happening that causes it not to work. You mean the transparency is not showing up in Maya's viewport? Or do you mean you cannot apply the material, or that it shows in the viewport, but does not render? We'll have to get more specific in order to solve this issue.
it's too bad you can't just save a transparent photoshop as targa, i have to make a large (transparent) image sequence and doing all the selection stuff over and over again is a pain in the ass
i know this is an old video, but still thanks, the teacher i had for modeling 1 seemed pretty much against using the alpha channel for one reason or another.
@TheStratDragon sure there are several ways to make a laser in Maya. In regards to using an alpha mask....in Photoshop create a gradient color across a 512x128 texture and paint a smooth alpha line (or something like a traveling laser beam would look like) in the alpha channel of the image. Create a plane in Maya and apply the texture to the plane....and either animate the UVS of the texture scrolling across the plane or animate the plane itself traveling across screen with some motion blur.
Thank you for this tutorial. I'm an animation/game design student and I was taught this months ago but it just didn't click until I saw this tutorial. Also, was never told about using .targa
@ShannonGayle Your welcome, I noticed from your Youtube your over in KC. I used to live in Olathe on the KS side and in Independence over in MO. I did a little work for Jim Lammers over there in Blue Springs who owns Trinity Animation as well. Cool too see someone from the area, learning the trade.
by the way, as you mentioned about next gen games these days, they actually do use alpha maps/channels to make a ton of the art work for pretty much every single game still released today
they merely don't use alpha maps as much on things that you would be up close to(though for things as u said 'chain link fence' of course will always use alpha channels for decades).
most alpha use these days is for environment art or cloth/vegetation assets
Very Nice tutorial, thanks. Although I hv a slightly different situation. Wut if I wr2render a thick poly plane(extruded onto itself) n hv same alpha map on both sides but still somehow define the borders as if they were a thick object. For example,I want2render a cloth piece with some thickness and which is actually a square shape in its actual mesh but i want to mask out the areas so that the rendered cloth luks like a triangle in shape but still retain the thickness. Hw shud it be approached?
Hello, I have a problem, I've followed the steps to getting the targa texture into maya and applied it to my model, the Alpha does seem to work on the masked areas however, the whole model becomes somewhat transparent to itself, showing parts of itself through itself (if that made sense lol) I am using maya 2009.
@quickfire331 Have seen this many times, it's a video card or card driver glitch to be honest. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card, and sometimes if the newest drivers have issues, go back and find a driver that's a year older. It sounds crazy, but on GeForce cards rolling back drivers solves some Maya viewport issues like transparency, normal maps, etc.
The steps to do this are: Create - Polygon Primitives - Plane. Select the plane, hold down right mse button and Assign New Material, select a Lambert. When the Lambert material properties come up go over to the little checkered box next to Color. Click on it, select File in the right row, and when the file texture attrs pop up, go over to the little folder next to Image Name and find your image you want to map into the material. Hit the 6 key on the keyboard to view the texture.
Can shadows go through the alpha channel, rather than just casting a square shadow? I've found one tutorial at 3Dtreat that says how, but can't understand how to do it!
I'm trying to figure out what you mean? Do you mean how to "stencil" out a faked shadow using alpha channel of an image? If you mean can shadows produced by Maya "go through" or cast through and alpha plane and alpha image...yes they sure can...it should be automatic if you turn on raytraced shadows and have an alpha'ed image in your scene rendering too.
When I apply a material and texture to my object it does not show up on the actual object. It only shows up when I render a frame of the object . I have Maya 2009. What am I doing wrong? I followed all the steps.
this is usually a problem when the texture picture is too large, i have the same issue, u just render to preview it is all unless u have a smaller version of the pic
@yellabell1 Try hitting the 6 Key on the keyboard, for showing textures in the viewport...also look into the viewport menu under Shading and ensure Hardware Texturing is checked on and ensure Use Default Material is unchecked.
Love your tutorials. Are you doing a part three for the uv mapping tutorial to map the actual texture on it? Id like to see how you get decent texture deatil. TX
wow, thanx so much for posting this video, i've been looking around for a video or something to do this, but everything i would find would explain the steps all complicated. you made it so simple...thanx again and keep it up man.
Droog....yes that is very true. Most instances if you are time constrained you would eyedropper select the color you want and in the PS menu do Select -> Similar....and it will select all of that same color.
Nice, but I think one step can be simplified, in PS, if I remember you can select a color with the dropper IE the white, rather then having to select inside each characters letters.. Since that can be alot of work.
Man no problem. Feel free to subscribe to my channel too. I will be adding many more pretty good texturing tutorials...the next will be on multi-texturing for real time game characters. Basically creating multiple UV sets.

@kokoilie Yep there are a few file formats that support transparency...it's just usually for the game industry we stick to TARGA format.
