Disney wasn't very good at makeup FX at this point. The other studios were decades ahead in creature makeups as this shows. Its good that they stuck to animation mixed features like Poppins & Bed Knobs'n Broomsticks until they caught up.
The books came into the public domain in 1956. Don't feel too bad for Disney, what else did they get to do? Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh, etc. I'm glad at least one other movie studio got to make a "classic" children's movie.
Disney wanted "The Wizard of Oz" as his follow up to "Snow White", but MGM beat him to the rights. The Rainbow road to Oz is a cute production that never aired. Disney later got the rights to the books. He could have created a dozen "IN YOUR FACE MGM!" productions. This is certainly one of them.
Har har har...When she sings, Doreen Tracey sounds a little like Zelda Rubinstein in "Poltergeist," which accounts for the creepy factor..."Come into the light...All are welcome..!"
I think her eyes in patch makeup are spooky and evil. I can see why this never became a classic. Oddly 'off' for Disney.

I always thought the Patchwork Girl looked REALLY creepy. Especially with her blacked out teeth.

Actually, I'm sure that her voice was over-dubbed.

So why didn't he make the movie about Oz?
TheAngelofHavoc 5 years ago
they did make Return to Oz, but I wish walt himself had made some animated oz movies...that would have been amazing!

Yes...Return to Oz was a Disney film, but it was long after Mr. Disney actually died. I too wish that he himself had overseen an Oz cartoon feature.
