  • Wait for it... wait for it... waaaaiiiiit fooooor ittttt... ahhhhhh....

  • noice! the dude's an animal! Bass Bone for Life!!!

  • what are the notes that the bass tbone's playing/ :D what crazy abilities!!!

  • Did anyone else soil themselves at 0:25???

  • Jeezz!!!! I play the trumpet and love all the high note stuff. I have watched this video a bazillion times!! SO awesome.

Makes me want to buy a bass trombone!

  • 3 people can't hit a pedal E

  • @geekyhick so I guess 139 can!

  • @tromuniapp I'm gonna be optimistic and say yes!

  • @Justintime4math Oh I am sorry I meant the tubas actual pedal range (their lowest notes). The pedal Bb1 sounds awesome on a tuba. :)

  • I've seen this video upwards of 2 dozen times. It NEVER gets old. I giggle with glee every time I hear that note. It doesn't get much better than this!

  • hilarious guy with the paper

  • @noirvalentin That was strangely hilarious to me too.

  • HAHA newspaper dude! And that is an epic note

  • Yeah the tubas are always going to win with how low you guys can go. I don't think pedals sound that good on a tuba though.

  • @ExternalGod I can play lower than a tuba on my bass trombone, but i play both, so I agree

  • @ExternalGod The range between low E and pedal Bb doesn't tend to sound good mainly do to the difficulty of tuning those notes without having a free moving slide (which the trombone has). a pedal Bb on a Tuba actually sounds really good if you can nail it.

  • I love the guy just casually reading the news paper...

  • so impressive in context

  • SO FAT!!!

  • I can't get over this.

  • That's just hilarious too

  • I've never been so excited before AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • Oh yeah!!!!

  • nice mouthpieces on the wall

  • which prokofiev is this?

  • @ShortroundDaTroll romeo and juliet - dance of the knights

  • whats with the guy reading paper?

  • @wolffe93

trombone players that dont play for long periods of time are always reading any other section you pull out a phone and text or play angry birds wtf

  • DAAAAAAIUM!

  • That's redick! It sounds amazing!

  • Now that's what I call trombone playing.

  • That pedal is sick nasty. <-- Coming from a cellist. Just awesome. lol

  • uber breath right before it.

  • I can hit Double pedal Bb on basstrombone but it's sooooo hard!

  • i wish i didn't sell my bass trombone. i wish i still played

  • @Thiora D: Why'd u sell it?

  • @badoc10 i desperately needed the money. i almost cried when i sold it, i played it for so long it was very hard for me to let it go. but in desperate times you'll do almost anything to get by

  • @Thiora Yeah, I understand that completely. I play bass myself. Btw, if you ever decide to play again, ebay sells bass trombones at unbelieveably cheap prices. I got mine BRAND NEW for around $290.00. You'd think its too good to be true, but they really are good quality.

  • I love trombone, I play!

  • to ensure good balance in the ensemble, they have the trombone section connect to the newspaper section.

  • and the other trombones look and smile:) haha nice

  • That's what I'm talking about...

  • that's what I'm talking about.....

  • nice chops. The pedal E takes a second to kickstart. You do lose cool points for not dropping the E-G-E-G the octave.

  • @999ArchAngel999

    wanker

  • @ccapello123

that won't win you any cool points back, pumpkin. I DID say nice chops.

  • I want a mouthpiece like the ones on that wall.

  • @CoolJoshBaby

    that you'll play even worse

  • Trombonists from left till right - Maarten Plug (first), Thom Huitema, Anne Wensink, Pieter 'Pedal-tone Piet' van den Heuvel

Guy with newspaper - Rembrandt Zeegers (trumpet).

Orchestra - Nationaal Jeugd Fanfare Orkest ('NJFO') from The Netherlands, conducted by Danny Oosterman.

Place - Fentener van Vlissingenzaal (Utrecht, Netherlands)

Piece - Montague and Capulets, from Romeo & Juliet (Sergei Prokofiev)

  • haha its funny how the tuba player is sittin there reading a paper

  • @williebeaty

There is a tuba in this excerpt

  • @russiantuba im guessing the guy at the end next to the bass trombonist is a tuba player. not sure though

  • @williebeaty No he's a trumpet player. In this set-up the trumpets are placed in the middle, with the trombones on one side, and the tubas on the other.

  • @hoogestefan ohhhh okay my mistake

  • Comment removed

  • @ccapello123 ohh sorry got my orchestra's mixed up :D

  • -100 for not playing a pedal G after that E! :)

  • fantastic the guy reading the newspaper!

  • i saw the other trombones start to chuckle. lol. that is definitely a trombone section!

  • @emantock91 HELL YEA!!!

  • OMGGGG lol, its so fat and girthy

  • 0:25 is epic. Enough said.

  • That was cool... but what's with the random guy reading a newspaper?

  • @datruking8

    Typical low brass section. :-P

  • Great pedal e. Shame the rest's out of tune :-)

  • out of tune?

    Listen again.

  • Comment removed

  • yes baby fat tones. I can play this tones too, but nor so clearly ond soo fat. respect oldy

  • To babtrombone...

It is definitely a pedal E. The last five notes are as follows: Trigger D (flat fourth position), Trigger Db (flat fifth position), Trigger C (end of the slide), Double Trigger for B Natural (~fifth position), then trigger pedal E (second position). If you still are doubting then simply check that the first note of the excerpt and the note in question are the same note, just one octave apart. Cheers!

  • yes sorry ur right, got confused

  • Hey, check the mouthpieces hanging on the wall...

    What are they, Schilke 599999999999999999999???

  • no i dont think its an e in second, it probably a d flat uding double triggers because it seems lower than an e

  • it's definitely an E natural, I can play that on my Bass Trombone easily.

  • @babtrombone youre retarded

  • @thepie567

i would not be talking, only idiots who say those sort of things over the internet are.

  • @babtrombone hey im sorry ok? i was being a dick

i was kinda having a shitty day that day.

    sorry man

  • I like this guy's tone quality a lot, a lot more on the Phat side as opposed to slightly more nasal sound you typically hear at those pitches and volumes.

  • I LIKE IT

  • Get rid of that twat reading the newspaper - he sucks big time

  • Wow, that's awesome. By the way, is he playing pedal E 2nd position plus trigger?

  • Yes, no other way for him unless he'd play a contrabass trombone in F in 12' F; E1 (pedal E) would then be a semi-tone lower than the F1 fundamental pitch at 44 hertz.

  • I watch this video almost every day for inspiration :p im a trumpet player so i cant experience that, but that trombone is sooo PHAT!!!!

  • DUDE NICE. I just started playing bass trombone at UNC Chapel Hill, and that is not a simple instrument to play, definitely gotta have some hair on your chest.

  • I love how the two guys on the far left end look over :-P

  • i think prokofiev had to have some sort of understanding of low brass or played a low brass instrument himself during his lifetime. i analyze all his tuba parts in his music and they are all really logical. at the end of this piece the whole band ends with a tripulet following by a quarter note, except the tuba that has the two starting notes of the tripulets and then has a pulet of rest and then it has a final note, he understood that it was hard for the tuba to play the triplet AND the last Q

  • You need to listen to more British brassbands or the New York Staff Band if you consider that to be amazing.

  • holy bals that was awesome lol

  • Are those giant mouthpieces on the wall?

  • LOL! I didn't see that.

  • Coolllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!

  • lovethe low

  • Whooooo that was FAT! Nice thick sound lol. Gota love bone players with lows.

  • whats the name of that song?

  • @ hurryupanbuy3:

It's "Montagus and Capulets" from Prokofiev 's Romeo And Juliet.

  • haha you can see the trombone players in th back smiling after he plays the E

  • that was fckn awesome. just the deepness of the tone and the loudness. props to bass trombone!

  • Woah, wait a second; I need some serious advice on this one. The third "variation" he plays F# and G in 5th and 4th open position respectively, correct? How come he then plays the low D in the position he played the F# in; that would make it 5th position which is impossible. Or did he play F# and G in 4th/3rd?!? Any replies very much appreciated.

  • not impossible. I play on a shires Bass Double plug bass trombone and the low D is only slightly sharp of 5th.

  • i agree with "james0398..."

the positions become farther apart the lower you go, especially with the trigger. A low C is pretty much as far as possible on the slide, a C# is in about 6th, and a D is between 4th and 5th

  • Thanks for your advice, james0398pqowieuryt and Reinocerous25.

  • ive heard this song... its so familiar. What the hell! this is the outro of Only Ash Remains by Necrophagist

  • Necrophagist... from Karlsruhe? Yeah I've heard of them, they're from my town. However, Prokofiev wrote this piece 70 years ago and before Necrophagist.

  • yeah i just like how they incorporated a classical piece into their death metal

  • Why isn't the tuba-player sitting next to the basstrombone? With the whole trumpetsection between them, there are gonna be some misstuning...

  • No, see because of the basstromboneplaying a pedal E, the tubaplayer felt intimidated and had to sit next to the trumpetsection.

  • Rofl nice one. I'd have to agree 100%! Hmmh maybe the Tuba player is even thinking: "What was that!?! He can play his pedal E louder than my open Bb (or C/Eb/F)!"

  • ummmm it's not hard.

  • @crunchbite22

    joking right?

    xD

  • @crunchbite22

No Tuba player worth his salt is going to be intimidated by that pedal E, I can easily do a Pedal B on my Rudolf Meinl BBb 5/4 tuba. =:)

  • @AvidEditD2 I think you missed the point of my comment. Read the description of the video then read my comment.

  • @AvidEditD2

    nice instrument u got ; )

    but expensive too

  • The conductor decided to do so because of the fact that this is a fanfare orchestra, which has a very over-crowded mellow brass instrument section. That's why he wanted the trumpets in the middle to get a more 'silvery' sound. Although he admits that it makes it more difficult for the low brass.

  • Montagues and Capulets!

  • notice everybody in the section looked up lol that woke them up

  • What's this piece called? So beautiful! :D

  • This is called Montagues and Capulets, or Dance of the Knights, and it is from a ballet called Romeo and Juliet. The piece was composed by Sergei Prokofiev.

  • nice! you should do the E and the G pedal

  • Are those...giant mouthpieces...on the wall...?!

  • ha that is cool

  • @euphfellowship LMAO, I think so! :P

  • @euphfellowship yes, schilke 50,000

  • @CleanMudPie hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

  • @euphfellowship oh my...i didn't even notice them. holy freakin crap

  • AWESOME

  • i know right! that was like the first thing i saw and i was like "wow..."

  • He played a low B natural at fourth position wtf...and with only one trigger

  • Gorgeous pedal E love it :)

sucks a b-bone range is only up to a double b flat :(

  • dude no its not...i play bass bone and i can hit above a double b flat

  • damn nice double E man love that note

  • is that a b-flat pedal?

  • double E

  • what do you mean double e? its just a pedal e

  • oh yeah, i call it double becuase its so low and sexy

  • I loved the pedal at 0:25! It came in so smoothly and effectively.

  • After the 50th time listening to this (which was about now), I noticed that there was another instrument playing with the Bass Trombone... I'm guessing Tuba, or more likely Double Basses. Because I'm still positive the newspaper reader is the Tubist (as he has a music stand with music on it, and is seated left of the Bass Trombone).

  • The person reading the newspaper is a trumpet player :p

  • doesn't that bass trombone have two triggers?

because I heard the low B-natural in fourth position

  • i like this.great stuff

  • very solid sounding down there. right on, man

  • funny lol

  • funny?? lol....

  • yes because it feels random

  • Great job on th peddle notes =] now iknow what they are supose to sound like lol

  • if you peatice play loud pedal notes like phill teal execicises then its eaasy

  • That's it, I'm going to have to take up trombone!

  • Like the fat low notes. Makes me want to play bass trombone.

  • how do you do that? I can bearly get a pedal F

  • i admire this! amazing love that e

  • Wow, that was BAD-ASS!!! I mess around playing lower octaves in stands music, but that was an expertly blasted pedal. holy crap

  • E-G--E-G--E-G--E-G--D-B--D-B--Gb-G--Gb-G--D-Db-C-B--PedalE-G--E

    Mi-Sol--Mi-Sol--Mi-Sol--Mi-Sol--Re-Si--Re-Si--SolBémol-Sol--SolBémol-Sol--Re-Rebémol-Do/Ut-Si--PedalMi-Sol--Mi

  • E²-G² x4; d-b x2; f#-a x2; d-c#-c-b; E-G-E², etc.

You got the 7th and 8th measure wrong. I think he used the F-valve on the E² and released it for the G².

  • god it's like the bassoon section of the highland regional youth orchestra. Me the principal arsing about changing octave to fit th etune evryone else not bothering

  • thats badass!i love that bass player

  • Pass me the tissues please: - )

  • Man, I loved doing crap like this during band rehearsals. Classic trombone section, too; one reading something, the others looking uninterested, and the bassist messing around with lower octaves. I love how they all laughed when he did it, too. Nailed it.

  • Lol, I think they were rehearsing. *wink xD

I think the "newspaper guy" is the Contrabass Tuba player.

  • I like how this is classic lower brass section. The guy next to him reading a newspaper (probably the comic section) and the bass trombonist gets bored and plays random notes down an octave.

  • Lol XD

  • Pretty much what I do in rehearsals. There are some good A-D spots in Dvorak 6 that bed for pedal A- pedal D. Fun to try, anyways.

  • Was that actually written in, or did he take it 8vb?

    Sounded Great!

I love playing pedals on my bass bone. Especially for rare situations like that ;)

  • That Pedal E was BALLSY! Awesome! Shame I never had to go that low!

  • I wish you put the start of this piece on as well.. It's Crazy.. but Great :)

  • I love the guy reading the newspaper

  • He is probably the tuba player. Since orchestral tuba parts go so long without any playing its not un common for tuba players to do this.

  • I was the tuba player in tha arizona all state orchestra when we played this (2008-this year) and the tuba actually plays more in this suite that the trombones. They have tacet on their parts for a few of the movements. This is mvmt. 1 Montagues and Capulets and the tuba/bass trombone part is very important. I'm pretty sure the string basses also have the same part here.

  • Turns out he isn't. Because Tuba would be playing with Bass Trombone and Double Basses - ALWAYS (for this piece)!

  • Being a member of this orchestra and Brassband de Hoekpunten, i'm actually quite used to this kind of things Pieter does. It's a pity that in the Summon the Dragon video from BBdHP he was just on the toilet...

  • good

  • is that a bass?

  • the other bone players started laughing after he played the pedal E lol

  • they were jealous
