This is def reality in the marines to me.I mean some guys pissed their pants when the DIs got in their faces. Some cried, some got mad and those were bait for DIs in my platoon.Once they get to ya, theyd fuck with you everyday til you learned 2 control it.And yeah breakups happen often and you cant help to have sympathy for em but there is no sympathy in the marines.DIs arent military counselors. They are our trainers to get us ready for war.Jarhead is as real as it gets in military films today.
@rnrjunkie44 Honest question here....do you think that training, and that mentality that is drilled home like that, that suppression control that, as evidenced in videos sometimes, maybe even often, fails; do you think that the Marines are out to circumvent any feelings or delay if and when a takeover ever comes along and the COs command their men to fire on American citizens if it ever comes to that? Like, I know they drill God, family and country into you, but, def seems like that often times
@rnrjunkie44 is abrogated, at least to me, in "don't EVER question orders no matter what" mentality? Like, would it be possible to pump a Marine or any other branch's soldier into such a frenzy that they would throw away that part that says "Whoa, wait a minute...this is wrong...no...can't comply with that order. It's against the Constitution (or God or family or law..fill in the blank with what you will)."? Get you guys so immune to the shock of violence that it doesn't register anymore?
@rnrjunkie44 I love our guys and girls in service to the country. If I had it in me, and or if it ever comes the day, I'll stand and fight along side you guys. But I'm afraid the scenario that I pointed out is going to happen one day. And I know that some will follow orders. Thank God hopefully the majority will not. No matter what their COs say. But I fear the training at some level destroys conscious. What would be the percentage if you could fathom a guess. That would stand w/ the people?
this scene is bullshit. this doesnt happen. this is a recruit war story (a.k.a. lie). D.I. s are marines who make marines and this shit is hollywood bullshit . dont fall for this crap. so tired of fresh marines coming home o leave with horror stories of this and that. i served and the worst i ever seen was foot lockers getting dumped in the shower in one huge pile with recruits pouring liquid detergent on the pile. then we thrashed for 20mins. nothing big.

@kingpojo1 This scene was an ripoff, those who do not understand this are not Marines. I can state 100% that the scene at the video NEVER happened. This alone makes his book "Jarhead" a work of fiction and not a memoir.
@Robbob9933 why is it then that so many marines state that there are times when DI's give them an occasional undocumented slap, or that 20 years ago (when this was based) there was still a decent amount of "hey you screwed up!" SLAP! "that was an accident" scenarios? i understand they shouldn't be hitting, but to be honest, some men need it to toughen up for the hard road ahead of them.
@MrPs103 First, most of those climing to be Marines never were. I am not saying that slaps do not happen and most if not all DIs that do so have a longevity in the Corps of about three days. The Corps has an easier way to deal with men that need toughening up, they just send them home to mama. They also do that to the Rambo wannabes. You will find that a vast majority of Marines past and present come from the same mold.
@Robbob9933 you're probably right. considering that i was unable to join, and i currently know only a few pansies that couldn't cut it, i'll take your word for it.
@MrPs103 The reason the first week or two of Boot Camp is utter chaos is that they are weeding out those that can not perform reliably under stress. In fact there is very little but rather creative physical stress, however anyone getting there could perform easily. It is the mental aspect that gets to people. Suddenly people don't know their left from their right, they can't count in sequence. Where the mind goes, the body will follow.
The first 45 minutes of full metal jacket, made any war film depicting boot camp, now till the end of time, look ridiculous. It's just an unreachable measuring stick.

I totally agree that what he talks about in this film is complete bull. I know this cause I have friends and family members in the marine corps .. And they tell me it's nothing like jarhead... But at the end of the day it is only a film. So no need to get worked up about it.
@TheCheeseman33 I served 6 years in the Corps. I was in the same places at the same time that Swofford talks about. I was just with a different unit. He was there allright. He was a Marine allright. But his "story" is complete BULLSHIT. ALOT of guys from his old unit used to post on a website dedicated to calling Swofford out as the punk LIAR he is. If he were to say that its all fiction, thats fine..but he doesnt...he says THIS is how it was and THIS is what happened. DISGUSTING. HE IS A LIAR.
The BOOK and the MOVIE "Jarhead" are both completely BULLSHIT. In no way does this film represent the US Marine Corps realistically or historically. There used to be websites posted up by guys in 7th Marines (the authors old Marine Regiment) that show how the author is full of SHIT. Its ALL 100% completely FICTIONAL. That,I can handle. But trying to claim that THIS is how things were and how things happened is complete bullshit. The author is a complete LIAR and was not well liked in the Corps

And, you know, is the price worth it?"; Secretary of State Madeleine Albright: "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price--we think the price is worth it." — "60 Minutes" (5/12/96)]
@CelestialEmbodiment Hey asshole. I simply dont CARE how many Iraqi children died during sanctions after the first Gulf War. Iraqi people are filth and DESERVE whatever happens to them. Your comment has NOTHING to do with my post. My comment is about Anthony Swofford being a proven LIAR. If you care about Iraqi children, why arent you IN Iraq helping them? Guess you really dont care all THAT much do you asshole?
Are people really saying this is a ripoff of FMJ? How about they're both rip off's of real fucking life? I lived that shit and it was way worse than any movie can ever depict.
Rule number 1 of basic training. Do not speak of your family's prior military service at boot camp, unless specifically asked by an instructor. Nobody gives a shit, and you will be singled out for it. Those are stories for AFTER you graduate basic.
I was a boot in 1988. I was a guy who tried to stay in the middle and avoid being noticed. I still got bent a lot and did get hit, hard, twice. This clown who is playing a drill instructor is failing. Full metal jacket is the best representation of boot camp. Co. D, Plt. 1076. Senior D.I. SSGT (GYSGT selectee) Carrington, Junior D.I. SSGT. Johnson, Junior D.I. SSGT. Williams. I learned a lot.
@Hellscope1 Actually, Full Metal Jacket is based on a true story. It's based on the semi-autobiography called "The Short-Timers" which was written by a Marine who served in Nam. Some of it is fiction, but some of it isn't.
But actually The Short Timers was based on a true story. Gustav Hasford was a Combat Correspondant in the Tet Sis Fire just Joker in the film, and the story is based on his Boot Camp training at Paris Island. Actually I think Jarhead is not hacking off of FMJ at all, it's just both films do such a realistic, and actual way of providing Boot Camp in the USMC, that it just seems there ragging.
Actually the two films are completely different Full Metal Jacket is about the transformation of young men into killing machines and Jarhead is about the build up to war and how the men relieve their tension when they want that "perfect kill"
Having seen this opening scene, I only can say that I'm still so happy never having been in any army, having never being shouted at by any military trainer or company boss, never crawled in the mud under barbed wire or having been shot at. Don't really understand why so many guys join such "organization" by their free will, which, after having entered will soon disappear completely....
@Norlifa1 And im glad that i will soon get to experience what not everyone want to experience. I cant wait to get through one of the greatest challenges of my life. Alotta people want to defend this country, they want the pride, discipline, courage, etc. That the men and women in uniform have. Next summer i get my chance. United States Marine Corps. :)
@LpZgotMota - Thanks for your comments. I admit, it's another way to look at things: challenge, pride, courage etc. Very "Macho" indeed. Yes, I admit, these attributes have a certain attraction, if not a "spell". Looking forward to your photo "before" and "after" you will get that "Jarhead" haircut. You can sent to to my e-mail:
gilad.vago@yahoo.de
Leave the question wheter "defence of the country" does really take place in Iraq or Afghanistan.
@Antiairstrike yep...my drill instructors beat us like the retards we were....can't do that shit anymore; these days, some idiot recruit would write his congressman and fuck the whole platoon over....
@xmikerinehartx Nine times out of ten, I would believe that is what would happen. What I am wondering about is the tenth time when the wrong recruit snaps and the drill seargent gets something he wasn't expecting, a little something called 'experience'?. It doesn't matter who it is, if a person continues the tough guy routine for too long a time, it is pre-ordained that someone will cross their path who is a little bit tougher. Thanks for your reply.
@borofalcon101 Probably so. The Marines to us Americans are the epitome of the rough and tough of society, comprised of Badasses. The Army Rangers is like the Royal Marines, not that one is seaborne and the other airborne, but based on training and overall toughness and training rigor. USMC training is pretty tough too.
And the UN isn't a good reference because they're too afraid to get into conflicts. They either call on the US or Britain as muscle in operations
@borofalcon101 actually the Royal Marines are a more special forces group. the Marines are a general infantry and they strive to actually train like the Royal Marines. So it's not really fair comparison. The RM is a very selective group
@CanadiaMiliatry15 Foreigners like you get confused because you think boot camp teaches you everything about combat and when you're done you're ready to go to war. That's not true, boot camp is just basic and there's a lot more training after that. Just to be a basic infantry you have to do I think 8 more weeks of specialized training and then when you get to your unit that's when your real training starts since those are the guys you deploy with and you have an established role in that unit.

The difference between Jarhead and Full Metal Jacket is that Jarhead is a true story.
All you faggots are like HURR DURR FULL METAL JACKET RIPOFF
Just because the Marine training is similar doesn't mean anything.
Hellscope1 7 months ago
@Hellscope1 Actually, Full Metal Jacket is based on a true story. It's based on the semi-autobiography called "The Short-Timers" which was written by a Marine who served in Nam. Some of it is fiction, but some of it isn't.

what a bitch. Full metal jacket ftw

who's the slimy little comet of shit twinkle toed cock sucker down here who just said that
luzang19 7 months ago
But actually The Short Timers was based on a true story. Gustav Hasford was a Combat Correspondant in the Tet Sis Fire just Joker in the film, and the story is based on his Boot Camp training at Paris Island. Actually I think Jarhead is not hacking off of FMJ at all, it's just both films do such a realistic, and actual way of providing Boot Camp in the USMC, that it just seems there ragging.

Did u see when the di tells him that jodie is getting fucked the guys behind the di are laughing
fightinray 7 months ago
Actually the two films are completely different Full Metal Jacket is about the transformation of young men into killing machines and Jarhead is about the build up to war and how the men relieve their tension when they want that "perfect kill"
CannonFodder95 7 months ago
Having seen this opening scene, I only can say that I'm still so happy never having been in any army, having never being shouted at by any military trainer or company boss, never crawled in the mud under barbed wire or having been shot at. Don't really understand why so many guys join such "organization" by their free will, which, after having entered will soon disappear completely....
Norlifa1 7 months ago
@Norlifa1 And im glad that i will soon get to experience what not everyone want to experience. I cant wait to get through one of the greatest challenges of my life. Alotta people want to defend this country, they want the pride, discipline, courage, etc. That the men and women in uniform have. Next summer i get my chance. United States Marine Corps. :)
LpZgotMota 7 months ago
@LpZgotMota - Thanks for your comments. I admit, it's another way to look at things: challenge, pride, courage etc. Very "Macho" indeed. Yes, I admit, these attributes have a certain attraction, if not a "spell". Looking forward to your photo "before" and "after" you will get that "Jarhead" haircut. You can sent to to my e-mail:
gilad.vago@yahoo.de
Leave the question wheter "defence of the country" does really take place in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Though a person rarely, or never hears about It, I wonder what the statistics are of recruits that snap and turn the drill seargent into a pretzel?
Grey9man 8 months ago
@Grey9man the drill instructor would tear the shit outa any recruit
xmikerinehartx 8 months ago
@xmikerinehartx Nine times out of ten, I would believe that is what would happen. What I am wondering about is the tenth time when the wrong recruit snaps and the drill seargent gets something he wasn't expecting, a little something called 'experience'?. It doesn't matter who it is, if a person continues the tough guy routine for too long a time, it is pre-ordained that someone will cross their path who is a little bit tougher. Thanks for your reply.
Grey9man 8 months ago
This scene feels like a toned down version of FMJ. It's about as intense as Ermey in his Geico commercials.

@09fredo When they aren't busy Killing Taliban or kicking USMC butt on ex ;)
cardinal6100 8 months ago
@09fredo You really are a total idiot who knows nothing about the armed forces.
1. The army guard the Royal Family not the marines.
2. USMC is very inferior to the Royal Marines when it comes to training, experience and dedication.
3. Search in Youtube "The Greatest Raid of All time" too get a little insight on what they have achieved.
4 The UN have said themselves that Royal Marines have the most difficult infantry training in the world.
5 SAS recruit form RM, and RM are close to being Spec ops
borofalcon101 8 months ago
@borofalcon101 Probably so. The Marines to us Americans are the epitome of the rough and tough of society, comprised of Badasses. The Army Rangers is like the Royal Marines, not that one is seaborne and the other airborne, but based on training and overall toughness and training rigor. USMC training is pretty tough too.
And the UN isn't a good reference because they're too afraid to get into conflicts. They either call on the US or Britain as muscle in operations
chillaxer1993 8 months ago
@borofalcon101 actually the Royal Marines are a more special forces group. the Marines are a general infantry and they strive to actually train like the Royal Marines. So it's not really fair comparison. The RM is a very selective group
chillaxer1993 8 months ago
@CanadiaMiliatry15 Foreigners like you get confused because you think boot camp teaches you everything about combat and when you're done you're ready to go to war. That's not true, boot camp is just basic and there's a lot more training after that. Just to be a basic infantry you have to do I think 8 more weeks of specialized training and then when you get to your unit that's when your real training starts since those are the guys you deploy with and you have an established role in that unit.
