Kissen was probably trying ti get out of there as quickly as possible - the 'Minute Waltz' - come on he just thought I'll bang this out and they'll clap like seals and I can go home.
I'm pretty sure this is one of the umpteenth encores Kissin always gives at concerts, which, would explain why he's not being super precise, and is playing around with the tempos. He's just letting himself have some fun - it's not supposed to be recorded
I have listened to both Kempff's. I consider the younger Kempff better than the elder. Kissin is head and shoulders above them in my opinion. I think the forward and backward motion may help with developing crescendo's and decrescendos. That's just my guess. Regardless, he is the best in my opinion. Every time someone suggests someone else, I listen to them. I still haven't found anyone to impress me like Evgeny Kissin.
BUT, as a big fan of Kissin's Rach interpretations, i had to force myself to give kempff95 a thumbs up for his comment. I am perplexed as to why Kissin played this piece with sooo much rubato and with a sort of "back-and-forth" sea-sick character. What a surprise, as this is a recent performance, not a performance of an immature 20 years ago. Hmmph.
Hate my comment if you wish, i'm just thinking out loud.
Putting aside others comments about his rocking back & forth like a mental patient (lol), it is still more important to focus on sound production and musicality. Come on folks, Glenn Gould who was more than a bit eccentric, played with his shoulders & face pretty much on the keys, and even sung along with his own playing; nevertheless a master with glorious technique, fluidity, & his own musicalitylike Kissin, Kempff, & Gouldaeach unique.
he does have high skill, no doubt, just lacks musicality a lot, almost because it seems too easy for him to play. also he is rocking forwards and backwards like a mental patient. to top things off, he almost broke the piano at the end, the technician must have been pissed !
Of Course he has SKILLS. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO EVGENY KISSIN IS?????
HE IS ONE OF THE YOUNGEST GREATEST GODS OF PIANO IN THIS CENTURY!!!!!!
Check out more videos of him here in youtube. He is amazing....unbelievable technique but even more impressive musicality and touch sensitivity. If you hear him live you'll be mesmerized at how he brings out different colors and sounds out of the piano.
I think I was at this concert. It looks like the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami. Anyone knows?
he is rocking forwards and backwards like a mental patient LOL... who told you he is normal, i dont think it is "like a mental patient", he actually abnormal LOL
you seem you are an ignorant not only in music but also in life. this is by far one of the greatest pianists that ever lived. he owns the area of musicality check his version of Chopin, Valse n°7 Op. 64 N°2 to see what i mean. also you should know that when ur recording by a personal camera its the image and SOUND quality is very different from what is real
Really? 'Cause I sway with the dynamics (volume if you're not familiar with playin) : leaning in and pushing my body away with my whole arm for loud notes and such...
flight of bee is harder than this. Try Rach version though, if you can nail that, your ready for the revolutionary Etude, they are about the same in difficulty.
i agree. that is completely rude and disrespectful. i'ts not funny, and absolutly terrible. can you play this piece? unless you can play it better, i don't think you have any write to make fun of him.

I attended this concert and thought the program was most interesting. Now that I listen to it here, it seems to me the piano wasn't very good either.
However, the Kissen's encores were brilliant. It is the only concert I have ever attended in which the encores saved the performance from being a disaster.
its too exaggerated, but its for show, and most audiences eats that shit. i feel like barfing after listening to this...not that its bad or anything, i just feel dizzy
only a great pianist would have such a great contribution to this posting - you must be a great, 2031M. I'm glad you so openly respect other's opinions.
Chopin would've hated this performance. he hated this "grand manner" w/ excessive sentimentality and exaggerated rubatos. As Friederik Muller, his top student says "He hated all lingering and dragging, misplaced rubatos, as well as exaggerated ritardandos...and it is precisely in this respect that people make such terrible errors in playing his works." This performance is interesting, but way too dramatic for this type of peice.
melodramatic playing is what's expected for performance pianists..Lets face it.. going to a concert or recital to hear Chopin Brahms or Liszt on piano and the pianist just plays the notes.. that's boring.. but when they bob their heads and make grande hand gestures.. THATS performing..
mozard was a composer, evgeny is a pianist. how can you even put them two in the same sentence? not to mention they lived in different centuries. plus that the comparisons thats going on is the cancer of youtube.
Wonderful interpretation - very moving tempo and dynamic range - one of the best I've ever heard - last but not least very touching to see that Kissin is still human (last bar gaff).
I miss his white tuxedos, heh.
