My heart goes out for all the victims, same programs are still carried out in countries such as iraq, egypt against the Christians and other minorities
@SellosMusic War brings out the worst in people. I don't doubt that atrocities occurred on BOTH sides during the Greco-Turkish War of 1921-22. Unlike the Turks however Greeks never engaged in government directed genocide. This is a Turkish specialty. Ask the Assyrians, Armenians, Kurds. The atrocities committed against the Greeks of Constantinople occurred during peacetime. Ottoman Greeks had high hopes of co-existing within the Empire when the Young Turks came to power.
Kemal was a totalitarian like Mussolini, Stalin or Hitler, and he founded a totalitarian state which has still many totalitarian aspects. An european country cant compare itself with them...
The are many Turks of conscience such as yourself however Turkey as a nation has not taken ownership of the sins of its past. For example, the government has never officially apologized or provided restitution for the property it destroyed or confiscated. Menderes was posthumously pardoned in 1990. Two high schools and numerous streets are named after him.
As a Turkish citizen i feel so ashamed with this. It should have never happen. Government of that time organised and watched these events. I dont know if it would be a relief you to know that the responsible fascist prime minister of the time Adnan Menderes was accused of this vandalism and hanged afterwards. But this blame will be on all Turks forever. Apologies and explanations will never be enough. We all should stop nationalism and rascism in the world!
@sasmg I recently returned to Istanbul. My parents and I left in 1956. From what I could see the Greek community, once vibrant and a major economic factor in the city is barely hanging on. What remains is a Potemkin Village of sorts for the outside world. Neither secularists or Islamists offer any hope that things will improve that things will change in the future. I have written about it on my blog: My Greek Odyssey
I was expelled from Anatolia when I was young for having a Greek Orthodox mother and Sephardi Jewish father. The Turks killed my uncle!!! Fuck Turgay.
My family and I were victims of the pogrom. I made this video to remind people especially young Turks of what happened. It is about remembrance, not hate. Memory is the only way home.
@Stavros1951 Stavro, I know nothing said now can change what has happened in the past but I hope you know that the actions of those ignorant one eyed bigots are not the views of the entire country and their ignorance not only cost you and your family ur motherlands but also cost our country an irreplaceable part of its identity and culture. I hope that you along with the other people that left Istanbul as a result of these riots can one day return to your country and breath its air once again..
@turkenator I'm neither Greek, nor Armenian :D, but believe me - you are just 1 of the very few turks I met here on utube, due to your self-criticism! (Cuz normally it's just non stop repeatin' of this "Ne mutlu.." (???) or mentionin' opponent family members "sexual" way!) Though this "pretty-sad-to-watch" vid - especially with the Greeks as the founders of Constantinople (Istanbul) in mind! - self-reflection is always a good sign of the positive changes to come. I wish you a good luck!
@Hollandia777 Please don't take those comments seriously, they belong to ignorant teenagers who don't know any better, unfortunately there are many of them here on youtube but they don't accurately reflect the views of the majority in Turkey. It's a shame really that this medium mostly attracts people with negative comments rather than positive, and this isn't the case only for Turks and the same goes for all other nationalities / people on here... :(
@turkenator Of course, not! There are idiots, everywhere! But sometimes .... Well, it seems Turkey sent us not its very best guys, you know! If to put it very mildly! (Sorry!)

@mpoukoma absoloutely right and im from constantinople..that reminds me of infamous!crystel night..what a terrible incident to take place in my beautiful istanbul..
This is a terrible and dark part of modern Turkeys history, that everyone should be aware of, so that something like this won´t happen again in the future. Not in Turkey, not in Greece and not anywhere else.
Everyone should be able to believe in whatever he wants ad to speak whatever language he chooses to. Freedom, peace and love to everyone!
