I worked at a company of about 50 people. We lost a couple of our legacy apps because there were no patches available. Mostly they were older pre-1995 tax programs, but they included our billing system. It was an old workhorse, and the company management insisted it would make it, especially after it worked after 9/9/99. I told them they should upgrade because it was risky, but they didn't want to spend money on a new system. It would have cost about $70,000.
Our old accounting system was Cobol based and it couldn't handle 9999 or 00 in the end. It appeared to work until we ran the monthly reports for January at the beginning of February 2000. The reports were all wrong and wouldn't even run because they ran into the 9999 end of file marker somewhere in the program.
Our accounting department ended up having to re-input everything for the year 2000 into a new system. We didn't have the new system implemented until March 2000. It was very painful because it was our most critical system.
My point is that unpatched systems DID fail as predicted. BUT - No major failures. No big disasters. Nothing much happened. It was a success. Y2k was IT's shining moment. We all worked together to avoid a meltdown.
This is a simple bug that turned out to be a result of saving space in computers.It was overrun simply by revealing new versions of programs,that turned this problem into a history.It made problems in finance sector (mostly),but we certainly weren't on the edge of apocalypse...Conspiracy theories...I believe some of them,but this makes no sense

Not fixing this glitch would have triggered US & Russia nuclear auto launch. This single glitch absolutely would have been apocalyptic.
I don't think you followed this series very closely. I pulled all of this from old headlines. Even after spending enormous amounts of money on replacing infrastructure computer systems and new software our National Defense got electronic warnings of incoming missiles. This could have been a scene right out of the War Games movie where we were ready to launch against a Nation that had not launched yet we thought they had.
As the electronic warning of incoming missiles was sounding off, our guys were told to ignore it as a glitch.This is real,it really happened on Jan 2000.If you were in the seat trained to turn the launch key when the alert sounds then what would you do?
Knowing that the enemy could have launched, & the enemy could have infiltrated into a position to tell you not to launch, I would have followed procedure and launched the nukes as trained, in this case not launching was a good call

Most problems that y2k would cause were well known & proven under testing but computer experts really weren't sure to what extent, therefore in that case theories were expanded upon to include the various embedded computer chip programming.
I can clarify perhaps one reason why this was such a serious problem that had more to do with just numbers. We based our entire infrastructure upon the unstable PC rather than the Mac. Windows was notorious for computer freeze ups, the dreaded Blue Screen. The tiniest confusion in the PC would shut it down or lock up. ATMs & Submarines running Windows NT had Y2k Shutdowns. Mac was never concerned about Y2K.
The US was under terrorist threat to attack on 2000 while we partied.
If we lost power Nationwide then they were waiting to pounce.
The military was keeping any occurrences a secret.
Terrorists watch our TV Satations.
To announce these vulnerabilities on air would have been irresponsible & suicide.
What if the News had announced today that our terrorist tracking satellites & our nukes were offline, what do you suppose would happen with all the enemies we have?

The Y2K "bug" had nothing to do with PC vs MAC...The biggest problem was with programs and databases created in COBOL on mainframes. If a problem occurred on a PC, it more of a coincidence or due to probability (that more enterprise systems use PCs vs MACs)
Power Macs prior to y2k were designed to handle dates through A.D. 29,940
I know what you are talking about but the problem that arose from the old cobalt sytem was simply that the pc did not have the programming to recognize 99 as 1999 so 2000 would be recognized as the year 00 or 0000, some say 1900 but that's not correct, to flip from 99 to 00 is definatly the year zero, this series explains that in great detail.
Mac uses a Linux based program but there is an OS that is just Linux, you don't need DOS, Windows or Mac as Linux by itself & all members of Unix family tree were immune to the Y2K problem, since they keep track of time internally in a way that's different. Instead of storing a month, day & a year as separate pieces of information, they simply keep a count of the seconds since Jan 1 1970 & convert this to a more user-friendly format as needed.

The Y2K Bug Was not going top fail all computers at the drop of the hand on the Year 2000 after 1999 but all computers even systems still being built this very day are succeptible to the Y2K phenomenon. as any system that was built by pre 2000 subsystems with the foundation systems that produced the software and hardware that produced these new systems was flawed with the drivers that run todays hardware.
@FreeGlobalEnergy I'm addicted to the TV show "Mayday" which is where this person got the footage. I beleive it's the one where they fly into a cloud of ash by Indonesia. But it could also be the one where the autopilot failed (which they knew about before hand but never replaced it) Never has there been an accident on that show that even hinted a Y2K. Alot of crashes occur in Asia and surrounding area for various reasons, always preventable.

Microscopic dust was blown into the upper atmosphere the plane traveling 540MPH gets a bit hot when even microdust is abrasive and made the engines hot clogged engines engines cooled a little and restarted.

If you take your car to a mechanic & a loose piston rod bearing is knocking & the mechanic says if you take that trip across country then your engine will break down so u have him fix it, u take the trip and all went fine. Do u go back to him & say he was lying to you that you made the trip just fine? Well duh, he fixed the problem therefore you did not have any problems. All major Y2k infrastructure problems were fixed and replaced, that's why your life was not affected but there were problems
I experienced 2 insignificant problems. I left my cell phone on over night. When I looked at the display it was all messed up, none of the words were legible. I turned it off then back on & that fixed it. I ran websites & there was a back office where I could see dates of transactions like last log in, last upload etc. The dates were all messed up. all dates had 2 extra digits but made no sense at all. It did not affect the function & later was fixed.
the serious problems were in banking systems or financial planners which I did not keep on the computer but imagine your bank account adding digits, good for you but devastating to a bank or an employer. These were the very real problems they faced but the average populous are ignorant, they don't track & follow things like I did but I did not record the news back then & most Americans have amnesia like 9-11 is now ancient history as we go on with our lives
Many major systems were tested by advancing the date to 2000 to see what would happen. Many malfunctions occurred. Missile silos over rode permission codes and went into self launch. My own Chiropractor when I asked said he had a technician in who advanced the date & all records with dates completely messed up including financial records. They had to back up the date, reinstall back ups & buy a new computer. Most people fixed the problem before 2000

My final message actually was not related to Y2K. It was merely expanding outward to a global observation that the US has had a series of blows and I found it interesting they hit rather frequently. I could show you enough evidence that US security was not low prior to 9-11. If a person enjoyed being a bookworm could go to the library. I am not sure if news papers are kept on microfiche anymore or if all that is on a computer or online but if a person had an insatiable curiosity to verify information & a desire to document sources could pull up all news papers of that era. Even though for national security reasons info is covered up it usually leaks out later in a small article or News cast. I went through it, some of those things mentioned were aired later.
What surprised me is that I went through that, I watched the news stories then when I pieced this video together with some video tapes I had I was really surprised that this information is virtually non existent in the entirety of the internet. If I were so motivated I would go to the library & spend weeks pouring through old news papers then copy it so I have the resources but even if I had resources would you actually look them up & ask them in person?

Most problems that y2k would cause were well known & proven under testing but computer experts really weren't sure to what extent, therefore in that case theories were expanded upon to include the various embedded computer chip programming.

I can clarify perhaps one reason why this was such a serious problem that had more to do with just numbers. We based our entire infrastructure upon the unstable PC rather than the Mac. Windows was notorious for computer freeze ups, the dreaded Blue Screen. The tiniest confusion in the PC would shut it down or lock up. ATMs & Submarines running Windows NT had Y2k Shutdowns. Mac was never concerned about Y2K.

The Y2K "bug" had nothing to do with PC vs MAC...The biggest problem was with programs and databases created in COBOL on mainframes. If a problem occurred on a PC, it more of a coincidence or due to probability (that more enterprise systems use PCs vs MACs)

I know what you are talking about but the problem that arose from the old cobalt sytem was simply that the pc did not have the programming to recognize 99 as 1999 so 2000 would be recognized as the year 00 or 0000, some say 1900 but that's not correct, to flip from 99 to 00 is definatly the year zero, this series explains that in great detail.

Mac uses a Linux based program but there is an OS that is just Linux, you don't need DOS, Windows or Mac as Linux by itself & all members of Unix family tree were immune to the Y2K problem, since they keep track of time internally in a way that's different. Instead of storing a month, day & a year as separate pieces of information, they simply keep a count of the seconds since Jan 1 1970 & convert this to a more user-friendly format as needed.

The Y2K Bug Was not going top fail all computers at the drop of the hand on the Year 2000 after 1999 but all computers even systems still being built this very day are succeptible to the Y2K phenomenon. as any system that was built by pre 2000 subsystems with the foundation systems that produced the software and hardware that produced these new systems was flawed with the drivers that run todays hardware.

@FreeGlobalEnergy I'm addicted to the TV show "Mayday" which is where this person got the footage. I beleive it's the one where they fly into a cloud of ash by Indonesia. But it could also be the one where the autopilot failed (which they knew about before hand but never replaced it) Never has there been an accident on that show that even hinted a Y2K. Alot of crashes occur in Asia and surrounding area for various reasons, always preventable.

Crashes and accidents are necessary because they point out flaws that need to fixed. And apparently, it's not such a secret if you found out about it :P Computer glitches are the norm, and they ain't going away.

@Gethsemaneful By the way this plane did not crash it was prevented and the 212 passengers are still alive today. Microscopic dust was blown into the upper atmosphere the plane traveling 540MPH gets a bit hot when even microdust is abrasive and made the engines hot clogged engines engines cooled a little and restarted.

If you take your car to a mechanic & a loose piston rod bearing is knocking & the mechanic says if you take that trip across country then your engine will break down so u have him fix it, u take the trip and all went fine. Do u go back to him & say he was lying to you that you made the trip just fine? Well duh, he fixed the problem therefore you did not have any problems. All major Y2k infrastructure problems were fixed and replaced, that's why your life was not affected but there were problems

I experienced 2 insignificant problems. I left my cell phone on over night. When I looked at the display it was all messed up, none of the words were legible. I turned it off then back on & that fixed it. I ran websites & there was a back office where I could see dates of transactions like last log in, last upload etc. The dates were all messed up. all dates had 2 extra digits but made no sense at all. It did not affect the function & later was fixed.

the serious problems were in banking systems or financial planners which I did not keep on the computer but imagine your bank account adding digits, good for you but devastating to a bank or an employer. These were the very real problems they faced but the average populous are ignorant, they don't track & follow things like I did but I did not record the news back then & most Americans have amnesia like 9-11 is now ancient history as we go on with our lives

Many major systems were tested by advancing the date to 2000 to see what would happen. Many malfunctions occurred. Missile silos over rode permission codes and went into self launch. My own Chiropractor when I asked said he had a technician in who advanced the date & all records with dates completely messed up including financial records. They had to back up the date, reinstall back ups & buy a new computer. Most people fixed the problem before 2000

Military could not announce any problems on 2000 because the military was having serious problems and we were sitting ducks with 3 terrorists satellites shut down & a malfunctioning NORAD that kept giving false incoming missile warning which soldiers were ordered to ignore. So if a real nuclear missile were incoming then we would have ignored it. They had to tell us all is fine or leak out information giving all enemies the chance to take out America all at once

My final message actually was not related to Y2K. It was merely expanding outward to a global observation that the US has had a series of blows and I found it interesting they hit rather frequently. Y2K was simply old technological programming procedures that ran up against problems in the future. The disasters that hit America seem to be escalating in magnitude. I see a pattern. If I am correct, he next event will be far worse than previous events

I could show you enough evidence that US security was not low prior to 9-11. I have seen prior that 1 single plane that loses radio contact or off course had 4 jet fighters surrounding that plane in 3 minutes with instructions to follow or be shot down. The USAF or Norad has never been that lax to not get jets off the ground for a whole hour after the first plane hit. Never have the skies been cleared to make it as easy as shooting ducks in a kiddie pool yet orders were given to not interfere.

If it wasn't for the people, the so called zealots, reprogramming, and fixing and preparing for the bug, no one would have been ready, and the results would have devistated the US. If a person enjoyed being a bookworm could go to the library. I am not sure if news papers are kept on microfiche anymore or if all that is on a computer or online but if a person had an insatiable curiosity to verify information & a desire to document sources could pull up all news papers of that era. Even though for national security reasons info is covered up it usually leaks out later in a small article or News cast. I went through it, some of those things mentioned were aired later.

What surprised me is that I went through that, I watched the news stories then when I pieced this video together with some video tapes I had I was really surprised that this information is virtually non existent in the entirety of the internet. If I were so motivated I would go to the library & spend weeks pouring through old news papers then copy it so I have the resources but even if I had resources would you actually look them up & ask them in person?
