  • its actually two Big ass engines lol, ive been lucky enough to have flown in the two seater version. In combat practice from Royal Air Force Binbrook. Licolnshire.

  • I like the way the fueling probe appears and disappears off the port wing, they always made entering and exiting awkward. Looks like an F1A, I caught the last 2 that were being used for development for Foxhunter by BAe, a pair of F6's. They flew them until about '91/92 I think. Shame it wasn't the T55's I wouldn't have minded a ride in one. Fantastic aircraft, and a very nicely edited video.

  • ENGLISH ELECTRIC Lightning, if you please - English Electric's aircraft division was grouped into BAC in the 1964 nationalisation and merge.

  • Excellent Video of one of the incrediblest jets ever! Thanks for sharing!

  • @taninozzo92 - I can back up the comment about the F35 being named after both aircraft. It's being built in partnership with BAE Systems in the UK. It's the Joint Strike Fighter to be used in the US and sold in Europe. Doesn't fly as nice as a Typhoon though...or one of these ;)

  • Two words best describe this airplane: climb rate.

  • Wow...I forgot how BIG these planes are for that era. I guess at the time, twin Avons was "overkill", most planes having only one. Funny, the Lightning looks like a oversized, twin-engine MiG-21 with cutouts at the trailing edge of the wing roots. But you gotta love that planform. Either above or below is the best place to look at the Lightning from!

I was thinking a minute ago...why would they name the 1-engine F-35 "Lightning II" in honor of a couple of 2-engined planes? Weird.

  • @justforever96 the F35 has been called lightning in honor of the p38 lightning and not in honor of the english electric lightning!!!! if you notice the f35 is a lockheed like the p38!! it's all clear now? :)

  • @taninozzo92 Lightning was selected because its a name both the UK and the USA have used before and is a tribute to both countrys past creations, it was very nearly called Spitfire 2 aswell

  • @shackvan for really???? O.O

  • @shackvan

shouldve been called the hang on for dear life

  • love it this is so sixties

  • Wonderful video, love the shot with the Victor. Makes me sad that we're now just a country of financial services and property speculators :(

  • Can't agree more with your comments ajlusted.

    Beautful aircraft, beautiful sound track.

  • @ajlusted Unfortunately, that's generally true of most of the "civilised world". Things have gone downhill since WWII...I blame the US, and nuclear bombs. No one has dared to start a fight. We may have some bad-ass technology now, but it just means that air combat, etc is more weapon system vs weapon system than man vs man. I was thinking, maybe we ought to start crediting the system designers with any "kills" made, since the plane does all the work...the pilot just pushes "yes" or "no". =/

  • i did not know that buddy holly worked as ground crew with the RAF....( 25 seconds in)

  • Legendary aircraft, really more of a rocketship than a jet fighter. The Lightening would blow off many contemporary military jets in terms of sheer speed & rate of climb. Bet the Typhoon would get left standing! Great vid, thanks for posting :)

  • it was also known as "the manned misile" or less affectionatly "the one man, twin fan, all aluminium death ship"

    outstanding aircraft!

  • thats not a plane , its a big ass enine with a seat strapped to it lol

  • No, it's TWO big-ass engines with a seat strapped to 'em. Even better! Cool video; It would've been cool if you could hear the engines, but a lot of those clips obviously have no audio, or at least you couldn't hear the Lightning in it. If there was no music, there would be big silent spots in the video. I thought the song fit pretty well too. I love where they strapped the missiles onto the fuselage too; that's so cool. Old cockpit with steam gauges, no electronics=YES!

  • @glynhoyland

    its a v12 gokart lol

  • They made a great noise too, shame about the ever present trend of background music dominating.

  • This rig was just a looker, no matter how you cut it!

  • Some things just look right:- Spitfire, E type Jag and the Lightning

  • Don't Forget The Avro Vulcan :)

  • @KeeChrs Ah, I still say the F-104 was a better lookin' plane than even the the Lightning. But not by much!

  • Great Plane, Great Song - Thanks (Anyone remember seeing these at the dispersal boneyard in Gutersloh around 1981- 1982)
