Your best option is to look at working with a soils supplier that works with green roof soils as each area and availability of materials will vary from region to region.
Great video! I'm looking into my own rooftop garden here, in Ottawa. Just wondering if you could recommend a lightweight soil alternative other than pumice. The reason is, I'm not sure I'll be able to find pumice here in Ottawa!
I grew up in North Vancouver, but I live in Toronto now, and this was the first video that came up when I searched Rooftop Garden. Crazy, hey? I love this video, btw :)
@a13cks There are regular drains in the roof and they lead into 5 rain barrels that are connected together and I have a small pump that pumps the water back up to the roof so the roof can be watered when it gets dry
It isn't a matter of attracting bears it is coexisting with them and they pass through the yard everyday - beats them trying to rip open a garage looking for a garbage can.
For people considering green roofs, be cautious with the use of small pebbles, framing material, and anything which is not fastened securely. In regions which experience high winds, these items could become missles in high winds. I imagine that you would be held responsible for damage caused to neighboring windows/structures, if your choice of roofing material and how you secured it proved to be a poor choice.
Very nice, energy efficient also. Cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Helping environment while providing food also. Need some architects paying attention here. Time to change is now. Thank You!!!
Thank you for your comments and kind words - it is what keeps me going that I follow my passion and share it with members of the community such as you!
Thank you very much for your videos. They are informative and you are a very good instructor. I believe that should make a long instructional video and sell it to the libraries. Many people needs this kind of information.
Hi Thanks for watching. This was shot around noonish. And we are just used to bears coming through the yard. They do't bother anyone here.
If you are interested please vist my youtube channel and check out our TV pilot - draft program (in three parts) called the Gardening Gourmets with my husband chef - about growing, designing and eating out of your own back yard.
Even though I won't be planting a green roof, I found it very interesting. What time of the day was this shot? While I am gardening (Wisconsin) I might have ducks, cranes, fox, birds, woodchucks or deer but no BEAR. That is scary, meaning if you are gardening very quitely & being one with nature...who startles who? Bear or you? WOW! Needless to say my heart would be racing. Thank you for sharing.
