Some of the clips are not from the 70's as my nan is in this film and she moved out of Egerton Street in 1971 when its states the film was made, but she was didnt look like that then.
Cantrill Farm a lot of thats gone now and the near by Hillside .Toccy hasn`t changed that much though . Don`t think they have the bagwash anymore ;) Awesome film.
My Mrs grew up in Liverpool 8 Tennison St she`ll love this.
people looked like they had aged well beyond their years in this great clip, all about there was the very real look of deprivation,it was this that kept people together and made them look out for one another.
Very informative. Film captures more than still pictures. Unbelievable that there were still wash houses in 1971 rather than a laundromat. This seems more like the early 1960s to me. I agree, the original houses should have been renovated rather than tower blocks.
This doesnt seem like 1970,s to me .The council did a lot of so called slum clearance in the 1960,s.My family were moved to Kirkby from the Stanley Road area.
@LeanneMariie15 I helped my next-door neighbors do that a few years ago. They couldn't get their new furniture through the entryway. Until then, they had no idea that window sashes came out so easily. Sad to see it here though, in such unfortunate circumstances.
typical big government response it to do what they want without any consultation of what people wanted. they still pull that shit today. all these historic houses destroyed. no one wanted to live in high rises, they just wanted some repair to the homes they had. great film.
Very distressing. Beautifully made houses which simply needed repairs and some renovation. The same thing happened in Belfast in the early 80's - the most historic parts of the city were demolished and replaced by flats and poor quality cul-de-sac housing. Shame. Most of the old folk died too.
the film was released in 71 so I guess most fo it was filmed inmid to late 60's. We lived just over the road from my nan and we were moved out in 68.

These clearances and rehousing were a betrayal of the working class.Under the guise of``welfare`they scattered communties to the four winds.

Best film I've seen on youtube. How untterley bleak and heartbreaking. Explains a lot about all of the social troubles of late 70's early 80's.

The wash houses of years past look like a hard way to do laundry, and carrying the wash down the street on top of your head!

This *is* 1971 - it's Broomfield's first film. Check Wikipedia for more info.
Also, I've got some b&w photos I took in Liverpool in the early '90s - many of which look like this.
