He means that if you don't get off at Finchley Central, you continue to Mill Hill East, thereby crossing the viaduct.
It was built around 1870 and can be seen in old paintings and photos of the area.
In the steam era, the line continued to Edgware.
In the early '70s I ran across the top on more than one occasion. It takes longer than you expect.

wow i never noticed just how high that bridge i last drove past here about 7 years ago lol when i was younger and ill prob predend to fall asleep at fichely centre station just so i can see from the top of that bridge lol
