I've used fans for over a decade to help me sleep (also white noise). Recently I had to stop using fans to sleep because my wife gets so cold she shivers at the same time I'm soaking my sheets in sweat. I understand your position :P

I've been listening to a fan (it's supposed to act like an air freshener but doesn't do a great job) for 3-4 years now and I have a little trouble going to sleep without it. I'm a light sleeper.
i know its far to long ago now, but you should have tried fitting the old blades to the new fan, may have changed the sound.

You need to overclock your new box fan.
I know how you feel. If I have any changes in my environment, falling asleep can become horribly distressing.
