Let's not forget the fact that although the "Big Rivalry" between American bands of the Kiss hay day was Kiss Vs. Van Halen? It was Gene Simmons who discovered Van Halen after all..
just a note KISS out sold both bands by the end of the 70s, as for the stones within 4 years KISS had outsold them in record sales alone, as for zepp. to each their own, and as for the joke status to the old people i guess so, i never gave up KISS, and enjoyed their success in the 80s, always stating to everyone THE ORIGANALS would get back together and rock the fuckn world better than before. I WAS RIGHT..... LONG LIVE KISS
This may be true...But! I think when all is said and done and they're gone from the stage because their getting nosebleeds from the heels or allergic reactions from the face paint? They will go down with quite a few records (guiness wise) They will go down in history with The Zepp, The Stones, and all the rest...oh and with Pink Floyd for innovating the stage show....
@airjamin8tor in the imortal words of OZZY KISS had the first stage show with bombs elevation lighting, fire smoking guitar, they did it first and the best, and still do!! Every one chumped them off except BLACK SABBATH, SABBATH was the only English band with enough balls to let KISS open for them, so there, thanks BLACK SABBATH
This may sound odd, but when I was young and listened to the original recording of this song, there's a part during the outro where I always though that my dad was calling my name. Several times I'd taken the headphones off and inquired if he had indeed called me. The part where Paul says, " And you know, I'm so tired of everybody saying it..." Always sounded like my dad in the background saying "Steve" the way he used to call me when I was young.
@Sixshotreviews2 Question, where are those bands now? KISS is in Europe, selling out arenas. Soon to be headed back to the states. Van Halen replaced Michael Anthony with Wolfgang [please]. Poison self destructed, Ratt ,who the hell is in that line-up now, and the Crue, they are trying but, can't seem to find the juice. NIKKI SIXX is the only relevant member of Motley Crue. SIXX A.M. kicks ass. Nikki should drop Motley Crue and focus solely on Sixx A.M. Total respect for Mr. Sixx and his talent.
You know I think it's pretty interesting that so many are comparing KISS to so many other bands. When infact, KISS was the influence for so many bands that came after them. And, that while all or most of those bands are defunked, KISS is still selling out arenas in 2010. KISS created something that has never been done and never duplcated successfully. I also like the other bands mentioned.
But, in the end, KISS is still standing strong. Try to enjoy KISS for being KISS, not anyone else.
If KISS had played their cards right they may have eclipsed Led Zepplin or The Stones and turned the tide with the great British bands, but it was short lived, their greed and over-commercialism reduced them to nearly joke status by early 80's.
@drugssuck1991 When Gene starting writing shit like Christine 16 & Dr. Love it went down hill!!!! You listen to ALIVE I & most of ALIVE II, the music had a hard edge. When you write pop crap as a hard rock band, the ship will soon sink!!!!
@bedank No disrespect to your opinion and as a KISS fan for life I may be a little bias. But, in my opinion KISS has eclipsed the Stones and Led Zep. Kiss is still going strong and they managed to launch a highly successful reunion tour in the late 90's. They are selling sold out shows at home and overseas to this day. Released a new successful album SONIC BOOM. And, are more relevant than the Stones or Led Zep today. And, they did it all their way.
@regtoyz Sir I would have to tell you that without the Rolling Stones there's no kiss. There are so many chord progressions and phrasing that kiss uses that are borrowed from the Stones. Led Zeppelin ? Are you kidding me ?
I prefer Kiss music to Led Zeppelin but you have to be off your rocker to say they're more relevant than the Zepps. Zep laid the groundwork for Kiss and all that came after. And you can't even compare the quality of the musicianship.
@mlmr11 Wow, I forgot about the comment I posted concerning Kiss, Led Zep and the Stones. My friend you are right. I don't know what I was thinking at the time. I am still and always will be a hardcore Kiss fan. But, you are so right concerning the aspects of Kiss's phrases and chord progressions. I just get so tired of no one wanting to give Kiss their respect. I would like to see them get their due in a not so backhanded way. Allow them to be the rock legends that they truly are.
@bedank, classic Kiss made some great lighthearted/bubblegum sex relations songs. The Stones, Zep, and let's include Pink Floyd, of that time, - they worked in a broader realm of general character, though including sex, - overall those bands could be likened to 'steak and potatoes' with a side of hors-d'oeuvres, whereas KISS could be described comparatively overall as 'the confectioner's rock', but still ballz out powerful on some songs and plenty fun and good on others.
I can agree with that, but those bands did not chage their sound, KISS did, first from a blue-collar hard edged band then going pop then to almost bubblegum/disco by 1980. Had they stuck to thier original roots and sound, and stayed away from the silly commercialism, ( I mean at one point little kids were attending their concerts with their parents), they would made their mark as the greatest American rock band. Now that title belongs to Aerosmith, Van Halen, The Doors, & others.
@bedank, I agree, you got that right. Who gets the blame? Mostly Gene I figure, but Paul didn't have enough wits during the 'change', Peter was just too 'trash can' in the song department, and Ace lost interest and turned to mush. Does that make sense?
@bedank For several years Kiss was so big and so high people eventually had to come down off that. Because I always preferred grander more expansive music- groups like Sabbath,Zeppelin,Tull, and Rush were always bigger for me as a kid... but looking back... I think the only rivals Kiss has ever had in hard rock and Roll was Van Halen with Roth.
right but then in the mid-90s they rekilled Van, Crue, GNR, Poison, and those bands who eclipsed them a decade earlier.
The music of KISS is eternal. God of Thunder and Do you Love Me will still be listened to in 2110. Talk Dirty to Me and Smokin in the Boys Room will not.
great footage:}Thanx;}
