There is a MUCH more realistic fire particle in Particle Illusion's default library- just go to the Ring of Fire particle (its in one of the last 3 folders in the default library.) go to it's properties and change to emission on a line. Now, it's basically controllable stock footage!

Oh gosh, looks really fiddly, thats the thing I find with editing its really tedious, but the more tedious and in depth the more you get out of it at the end a real sense of satisfaction and I love that wow factor!

instead of blackening it, you could have put a green screen/green poster in front of the window and chroma keyed it out, replacing it with he fire effect. The only problem would be bad lighting.
