i know how he does that. it was actually revealed. when they put the straight jacket he holds his breath and stick his chest out and stiffens his legs. than when they hang him up he lets go and he stops sticking out his chest which gives him space. hes still really cool though!
Houdini! Fabulous footage and I am so grateful to have found it here. I visited the YouTube Channel after falling in love with the magic shop. Thank you so much! :)
@yourmumcantcook *ehm* Harry Houdini was the first person to escape a straight jacket, infact he was an escape artist. AND YES it IS a type of magic!!! Plus , he did more awesomer things than that! I suggest you learn more about him and about types of magic before you give opinions. I'm sure you will agree with me or the rest of us after that. :)
@TheNeonKittyCat And the dude actually risked his life with many of his escapes. Today`s illusionists or escape artists know they aren`t going to die. Houdini could have died a hundred deaths if he wasn`t so great.
If this is film from New York approx. 26th December 1916, then I'm guessing the young man seen in the balcony just after the great Houdini works his magic, could be my cousin Les Darcy the Australian champion boxer, he met Houdini then. If it is, then this film is doubly special. Thank you.
@galavant Everyone is wearing coats, so I'm assuming it was a relatively cold day. He took a deep breath right before that large exhale, so it's suffice to say that what you see is condensation and not smoke.
why did he let people put him through this but I do think he is amazing how he did it and I realy liked how all the security people where there lifteing him up so he did not get hurt and how they where actually kind to him :):
You don't have to be able to dislocate anything, that's a myth perpetrated by Houdini himself. Depending on the version of jacket you just need to "puff up" when they put it on to allow yourself enough slack to get to the straps.
My brother, pointed this out to me. Look at this video closely Just after the security people put on the jacket, Houdini puffs some smoke out !!! What is the purpose ?? What was the smoke ??
hes the best magic magician of all time because no matter how hard the torture or how painful the pain was to reveal his tricks Master Houdini never revealed his genius tricks....I LOVE YOU DADDY...RIP...you knw hes half maori...
houdini was the greatest thing to come to magic and illusions everthing nowadays is mirriors and lighting. and staright jackets used by magicians are made for escaping they are completely fake
Thank you formaking the point about the buckles. I was thinking the same thing when I was scrolling down. However, it is only speculated that Houdini was able to dislocate his shoulder. Modern day magicians have been able to get out of straight jackets without doing that.

If I remember my history correctly, it was customary to wear a hat in public until president Kennedy (who didn't wear a hat) changed the custom.

Just saw a film with Guy Pearce playing Houdini, a miscast to my view. Film is ok, but not well worked on, could have been much better.
