i know how he does that. it was actually revealed. when they put the straight jacket he holds his breath and stick his chest out and stiffens his legs. than when they hang him up he lets go and he stops sticking out his chest which gives him space. hes still really cool though!

@galavant Everyone is wearing coats, so I'm assuming it was a relatively cold day. He took a deep breath right before that large exhale, so it's suffice to say that what you see is condensation and not smoke.

You don't have to be able to dislocate anything, that's a myth perpetrated by Houdini himself. Depending on the version of jacket you just need to "puff up" when they put it on to allow yourself enough slack to get to the straps.

its possible to escape with out dislocating anything. u have to grab the jacket as they strap u in so you have some slack to work your head through.

Thank you formaking the point about the buckles. I was thinking the same thing when I was scrolling down. However, it is only speculated that Houdini was able to dislocate his shoulder. Modern day magicians have been able to get out of straight jackets without doing that.
