This song makes me cry everytime I hear it... There're so many memories connected to it... I don't know why I've got to cry when I hear this song, because most of the memories are good...
@JoeYampolsky The original song was written by Boris Formin and was sung first by Alexander Vertinsky (see wikipedia) in the 20's. you can find an early recording here on youtube too. watch?v=LVQ3TplZxMA
These guys REALLY need to get together with Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies and put out an album. It'd bring fans of two different yet similar bands together and the album/concert would be awesome I think :)
I watched the movie "Leningrad Cowboys go America" ... Great... I'm a fan now ...:) Best scene: Car stopps at station and all the empty beer cans falling out... hahah
@Murkula86 The musical quotation refers to the "At the Manchzuria Hills" item. The song was originally composed by Ilya Shatrov in 1906 and dedicated to his war friends fallen at the Russo-Japan War of 1905. Shatrov was the conductor of the military band and happened to be surrounded by the enemy with other troops. As the story goes, he made his band play to initiate the counter attack. Him and six more soldiers managed to break through.
Funny, the tune is an old Russian folk song. Mary Ann Faithful's words are very different from the original, I think. Used to date a Russian guy who told me this.
I have no idea how but my friend discovered this and played it at a party yesterday. I've never seen people going nuts as much from a song that nobody had ever heard of before as they did yesterday.
credited to Gene Raskin, who put English lyrics to the Russian gypsy song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" ("Дорогой длинною", lit. "By the long road"), written by Boris Fomin (1900-1948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii. It deals with reminiscence upon youth and romantic idealism. The first known recording of the song was by Alexander Vertinsky in the 1920s. The song is best remembered for Mary Hopkin's 1968 recording, which was a top-ten hit in both the U.S. and the U.K.
