@smalin Blah! The point I tried to make is that it doesn't take many notes to make a recognizable melody. The Toccata is one of the most famous "few-note" examples. So is Beethovens Fifth.
I just see comments in a language that belongs to a country without a soul , this music is for the Human spirit not for the sons of Hippocrates. If you can not make a statement out of your mediocracy please restrain from making any. Bach is for everybody with a soul, not for the trivial .
I hate watching the screen like this.. it just reminds me of piano keys being pressed.. Not visualising the music.. I like pictures better, like the song though
@utrvg4 Bach believed his music was divinely channeled.Regardless of whether or not you believe in a judeo-christian god of judgement (which is just a projection of mass human insecurities),Bach's music evokes feelings both mystical and transcendental. Bach takes me out of myself by overwhelming my entire being with pure beauty.Goethe said that Bach's music "is eternal harmony in dialogue with itself."Like nature, Bach's music loops in on itself to perpetuate itself. In that sense, it is godly.
You still owe me the Sinfonia from the second Partita by Bach. The high-speed fugue would look really nice. The g-minor fugue BWV542 is also a great possibility. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G videos.
@smalin The St. Louis symphony plays in a converted movie theater (from the golden ages). They still have the screen. It would be great to lower it a few feet and project this above the symphony!
This has to be one of my favorite pieces of music. I especially like the part around 4:03-4:53 - the whole build up of each part is pure musical genius. I enjoy the "visual Music Machine" it helps me to "hear" the music better as it makes each part come alive.
So why is everybody saying no school can play it this fast? It's really not that fast at all. My orchestra did it in high school and it sounded just fine. Yes, it could sound better slower, but it's not as fun for the performers. It wasn't 100 percent perfect, but I LOVED playing this piece at this speed. When the song ended and the audience was clapping, and I realized that I really played at that tempo, it gave me the most accomplished feeling in the world. I was absolutely thrilled.
This performance seems to be at a normal rate of speed; it is comparable to the famous performance by Wendy Carlos on "Switched-on Bach", for example.
@14oreos meh, it could have been worse. plus, we were also really focused on Perseus, so when we got that piece, it was gonna be a miracle if we got to the end. It was decent, though, so i can't say much more on the matter.
@14oreos I'm sure it can be played fast and sound good, but with everything that was happening and such, playing it that fast would have caused a train wreck. but that's just me. I'm positive that if we had more time, and if people would actually practice, then things would have been better.
Hi smalin, I'm the person who uploaded most of the Advent Chamber Orchestra recordings to the Wikimedia Commons. I've just uploaded a complete version of the 3rd movement of this concerto to the Commons, to replace the previous file there, which only contained half of the movement. You can find me on Wikipedia and the Commons by looking up "Graham87" on Google. I'm totally blind so I can't enjoy the animations that you create, but I can appreciate how much time it takes to make them!
The fastest tempo I've ever heard this played, and everything is necessarily so staccato. Still, better too fast than too slow, it does need to be lively.
We're suppose to be playing this for a concert in a few weeks, and something tells me that even at a high skill level, a high school orchestra could never play this fast.
@smalin There is, actually. Playing it slow makes it sound monotone. But playing it this fast is the proper way. Trust me, I read the sheet music, and the tempo is Allegro Vivace for the most part, meaning at least 144 BPM.
@345bomberman I too read music. Bach did not indicate a tempo for this movement (see the manuscript via the link in my FAQ). I have heard and participated in many performances of this piece. I do not distrust you, but I think you're wrong; the most satisfying performances have been slower than this. With the proper accents, articulation and phrasing, you can get all the energy you need but still have the clarity of a slower tempo.
@cutensweetpie13 only if it is a fail high school... granted it is going too fast for this song, it isn't as hard as some of the stuff we are playing.
@cutensweetpie13 But these concertos were not intended for a high school amateurs. They were originally written for, or at least played by, the musicians at the court of Prince Leopold, where Bach was capellmeister from 1717-1723. These musicians were highly skilled professionals.
This tempo (about 112 BPM, a slow allegro moderato) sounds fine to my ears, though I've heard it played much faster. The rate of change of harmony, not the skill of the players, determines the IDEAL tempo.
I think it's perfectly paced to be energetic and enjoyable even if not 'perfect' according to some stuffy know it all and the many 'band wagoneers' who wouldn't know an allegro from a waltz from a fugue.
I have to agree with other posters. Granted, allegro is supposed to be a little faster than andante, but this is being played at nearly break-neck speed. I can "hear" music and phrasing without a metronome. I "hear" this as feeling rushed. Technically well played, but just a little too fast.
@smalin A great recording of the Brandenburgs that is even faster than this is the Koln/Goebel recording. I think you should listen to it, it may change your mind about Breakneck Bach.
@majorhuman Oh, I didn't mean to suggest that I thought this tempo was unworkable. I think that if you play lightly and with sufficient agility, it's possible to play it much faster. I just meant that it would have sounded better for this group if they'd used a tempo that was more comfortable for them.
@kegginstructure Doesn't sound at all rushed to me. (There are even faster performances.) I think what one prefers is a matter of what one is accustomed to: the lethargic, anachronistic, congenial but clueless "Late Romantic" Bach or the HIP Bach. Like the Pachelbel "Canon" for 3 violins and continuo that is typically played in modern arrangements so slowly, romantically and anachronistically that it's barely recognizable at a 17th c. work.
Were playing this song in orchestra, and i simply hate it. Bach composed all the boreing stuff, not that he knew at the time what he'd caused, so I dont hate him directly but he was on sum serious crack or something composing this cuz this is all over the place and the fingering is wild!
@rowan729 lol, and this what people thought when he was alive, which is why this piece was not played during his lifetime, they counldt figure out how to play it, and therefore he never saw a peny of this work.
This is one of the most beautiful things a person can experience, if they can understand it, is music at its richest point

@DaSkillz24 I can't study to most baroque. It's much too busy. I keep trying to pick a part out and follow it through the song, and that's too distracting. I have to tune it out to get anything done.
@Iwazaru674 Bach didn't write a second movement; he just indicated that the harpsichord player should improvise something (and wrote the two chords the improvisation should end on, for the rest of the group to join in playing).
His use of counterpoint was so profound and sophisticated that when put into a visualizer you can see the different parts have different intentions and paths, yet they harmonically contribute to a beautiful masterpiece. Teamwork at its finest.
If I HAD to guess (and this is only a guess) , I'd say that he first composed/played it on an organ, as that would enable him to hear the other parts when, and as, he chose.
So I'm assuming Bach could think at least four separate thought processes at once and act upon each one septate of one another from his body. (I've never really heard Bachs music before this :P. I didn't know what I was missing lol.
So I'm assuming Bach could think at least six separate thought processes at once and act upon each one septate of one another from his body. (I've never really heard Bachs music before this :P. I didn't know what I was missing lol.
Fantastic I love this very much! What a piece of work it must have been for you! i have also used it for some pupils to show en hear. They haf a lot of fun with it!

was this supposed to be for a dance?
dilaudud 1 year ago
@dilaudud No.
smalin 1 year ago
@smalin i asked because his borree (sp) is for a dance and it's about this tempo.
dilaudud 1 year ago
@dilaudud chamber?? i though dance because of the similarities in tempo to bachs bourree
dilaudud 1 year ago
@dilaudud This is much too fast for dance. If people tried dancing to this, they might trip over themselves at this speed.

Okay so I'm new to this whole baroque music thing so this may come out as a dumb question. Where is the second movement to this?
Iwazaru674 1 year ago
@Iwazaru674 Bach didn't write a second movement; he just indicated that the harpsichord player should improvise something (and wrote the two chords the improvisation should end on, for the rest of the group to join in playing).

@smalin Oh! Hehe, cool then. That's pretty interesting, would be cool to see what people have done with that! Thanks for the reply!
Iwazaru674 1 year ago
@Iwazaru674 You should check out Wendy Carlos's version of this, done on the Switched On Bach album. It's not Baroque, but it's pretty good.

@cdejan71 Space isn't endless. ;)
However, since I'm going to put my main comment in here as well...
This is a stupendous song. I wish that people of Bach's character continued to play this well.

Excellent work, mr. M! Love your work.
Do you take requests? :)
I'm really curious how the "Prelude from Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 in G major" would look like.

3.21 - 3.31 ....... Pure ****ing class !!!!!!!!! This people is how to modulate! When Bach wants to go somewhere musically, he will take you the longer way round to get back to the root key! Emotionally good !!!!!!!!!
