  • great video man. ive learned so much from you and your videos. Question for you....what about 4 cups of whole wheat floor in a ziplock bag and 4 cups of oatmeal in a ziplock bag and 4 cups of vegetable protein which weighs nex to nothing. as well as 4 cups of rice. takes up a little room but does the trick. i take these on any trec i go on. Floor good for making Banock and the vegetable protein can be mixed with it. the oatmeal is quick and easy and rice make a good meal.

    Thanks, great videos!

  • Great info thank you air sharing. I used to go with the ocean spray type package drinks too until I tried a mio liquid water enhancer. They taste great. It's 24 servings in a tiny bottle so less space taken and trash is cut back a little as well.

  • I saw this video first and trying to mold my BOB food wise around your's.Thanks sooo much for the info!!! I also added a few small bags of hard candy(peppermints and butterscotch flavors). Great job.

  • Like the idea that there is no cans or glass... Tuna is great for proten

  • i would substitute chicken for tuna which can be bought canned. Cooking can be magickal. My idea of backpacking involves a lot of travel in a 5th wheel or other vehicle. But what I can put in my walker is a good thing too. A friend of mine and I had a financial crisis and we ate our camping food and survived until next pay day,

  • Good stuff, i was considering mre's but you have swayed me.

  • Keep in mind.... the dates on packages are almost always "best used by" dates, not "if you eat this one second after this date you will die a horrible death" date.

  • Oops sorry your tubas expired!

    Y did I watch this?

  • you can vaccum pack your own peanut butter too....cut the corner off an squeeze to eat.....kinda like the peanut butter version of gogurt....plus you dont need a utensil and you can eat it if your hands are dirty...hope that helped...good vids dude

  • @MyBigThing2010 and it way cheaper....

  • Nice video!

  • If you have a vac U seal why are you spending all that extra money for the over priced single serves? you can make your own. You can dehydrate your entire meal and it still be easy to carry..shrugs just curious.

  • this kinda stuff will last like 2 weeks at best wtshf! learn some primative skills!

  • Great ideas! Hey, by the way your tuna expires tomorrow. Ha!

  • i allways love all ur videos

  • the 'l' in salmon is silent.

and i think its pronounced "rah-men"

but alright i'll stop being an ass

    thank you for the ideas

  • just remember...you can tuna piano but you cant tuna fish

  • that tuna is bad right about now...haha jk

  • RAMEN! = DROOLIN!

  • I see pouches of tuna. I did some research at one point, and contacted the manufacturer. maybe starkist. The tuna in the cans lasts probably twice as long as in the pouches I have found out. I hate tuna though! I found the mountain house brand of dehydrated food lasts much longer(6 or 7 years from manufacture) and they taste really great! I know they are expensive though, and less self sustainable. I keep them for emergency survival, and of course, I use them backpacking.

  • Being new to backpacking this is all helpful to me and my wife. The last camping I did was when I was a boy scout. Crockert20 and NUTNFANCY have been helpful. Thus is great what you shown us so far. On to video 2 now. Thanks.

  • Raymond Noodles

  • carry tuna packs and individual packets of mustard and relish. mix it up. call it a meal lol. Mustard and relish are free at some food stops.

  • do they have chicken and turkey to ?

  • That spam is loaded with salt very bad food. Not something i'll take. I'm not a poted meat fan. I take and dry chicken, turkey and beef and have jerky for my snack. I can simi controll the fat salt and carbohidrates to as good degree. It weighs alot less. Little hot water and I'm set for a regular meal also with with a few other additives. Like dried veggies and noodles ect.

  • Great idea! Precise and clear. Thanks.

  • great video

  • Everything looks yummy!

  • Just a quick heads up to a fellow tuna lover. you want to be aware that the current tune (indeed most fish) stocks are now contaminated with toxins from the BP oil spill. just want to be aware of that.

    Peace PackRat

    M

  • Good vids

  • I like how you say "raymen" although it's really "rawmen".

Great ideas on mixing food together for a better meal!

  • i love this very good and cheap

  • I concur. Tuna Is delish

  • Great video man. Always like to have new ideas on trail meals. This past weekend I made some of the Campbell’s Noodle Soup that comes 2 packets in the box. While I was waiting for that, I horked down a pack of tuna. Nice to have some no-prep options!

  • Beats the daylights out of the prepared stuff you get at your local backpacking outlets.

  • if people dont like tuna like me they sell salmon in those foil packets for like 1.50-2 dollars, I just saw em at target a couple days ago and some. The 3 i bought have a 2 year and 3 month shelf life in room temp

  • those spam singles are the shiz!!! Eat em daily.

  • Hey, I know I'm not Mr. Doctor, but all that Tuna is not so good. Tuna has a lot of mercury which won't be very forgiving as you age. Just a tip, same for swordfish. Mercury is good for you, but too much of anything is bad. Thanks for the great video anyway!

    -Omar

  • Cool I Like the Food Combos :)

  • WERE IS THE FRIED CHICKEN!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i wouldnt use those drink mixes myself. the healthy option is gatorade mix. i bring drink mixes but never the kind with sugar substitutes cus ive heard they cause mutations in lab rats. please keep in mind this is something my hippy-ish mom taught me like 15 years ago so its not super-duper credible.

  • The good thing about ramen, you can eat it without cooking it and it still tastes great :D

  • the ramen are also good with put cooking

  • what i do is i cook my food then dyhydrate it so i have chicken curry roast beef dinners well i have mini bits of veg great on the trail or fishing

  • what i do is i cook my food then dyhydrate it so i have chicken curry roast beef dinners well i have mini bits of veg

  • my issue with those Jiff cups is that they come open VERY easy, packing them in anything but the cardboard box they come in has for me resulted in catastrophic peanutbutter failure and the need to try to get it out of/off of the contents of my pack. Very good video BTW -Sharpchick

  • If you are hiking last thing you are worried about is eating a single package of spam. Diets are all about calories out vs calories in and if you are hiking 10+ miles a day (which I assume you are if you are packing your food with you) then you are putting out a LOT of calories and need to eat enough as to not starve yourself.

  • if you dont like spam, you are not american.

  • @flunker911 i guess i'm an illegal alien then XD

  • this is the best backpacking food video on youtube

  • Thanks for the vid Sir!

I have a question. Im not a 2012 freak or whatever, But I just personally think its a good idea to have some MRE's just in case. I have a case of the military MRE's but they are hella expensive, I was just wondering, would the ones you make, be like, a "filler"? Do you think something like that could fill you up? Or would it be just like a snack? I go camping alot, and sometimes its exausting.

    Thanks.!!

  • TUNA FTW

  • Gave me some great ideas to use. Thanks.

  • wow 11 cents for a pack of noodles damn great foods are cheap as hell in the usa here in the Netherlands we pay like 88 euro cents for a pack and thats just the cheapest stuff and the knorr Mexican rice aint even being sold here in the country were knorr originates from

  • @nakugaka Everything is expensive in Europe, even in Portugal where I live. All of the new costs and taxes that are being imposed on US companies will probably bring the prices up to the level of Europe. That is how we get our "free" health care.

  • will they attract animals when there still in the package?

  • mmm better than MRES!

  • you americans certianly know how to make good beef jerky

  • @ fasted.... I know just from the mercury in the contact lens solutions from decades ago. My eyed took months to heal.

  • Tuna has very high mercury content. I wouldn't eat it more than 3-4 times a year unless you want to end up in the hospital (ask me how I know). It takes a long time for mercury to pass thru your body (many months) and the accumulative affect will cause a ton of health problems. NOT WORTH IT

  • @fastedos1969 .....how do you know?

  • @iSmokeCronicUshld2. I am being treated for mercury poison that was caused by eating sushi and tuna. It's very debilitating to have mercury poisoning

  • @fastedos1969 I have been eating canned tuna for 26 years at least two cans a week if not more. I have never been sick.

  • Great video, great information..... Next time your at Walmart or the supermarket, look for Nissin Chow Mein.. Its usually shares the same shelf space with Ramen Noodles. Try both the Peanut Thai and Chicken flavors...either would go good with those tyson chicken packets...88 cents.

RiceaROni also sells MRE type ready to eat flavored rice in packets.

These kinds of foods are also great as Disaster/Emergency type food that everyone should keep in the home and rotate it once a year.

  • I used the white chicken and then i also added the instant garlic mashed potatoes to it and it was amazing! thanks for the ideas!

  • There's one thing you want to be careful with when buying these kinds of meals, Sodium. Packaged foods are LOADED with salt! READ THE LABELS. I'm an experienced backpacker and sodium is the one reason I don't buy these foods. They are OK for short trips and day hikes but for extended hikes, I would avoid them. And MRE's are never a good choice! Read the label on one of those things, you won't believe the crap the gov. is feeding our troops. Nothing beats a dehydrator for making your own meals.

  • those star kist tuna packets are high in selenium

if u have to much selenium on a daily basis

eventually you could die from selenium over dose

just thought u should know that

  • its pronounced rah-men

  • If it helps, the giant Korean grocery stores used to sell 20 Lb bags of good quality rice for around 5 to 6 bucks....I understand that prices have went up this year but not on sale maybe 10 to 15 bucks......maybe good combo with the foodsaver system....

  • That spam is interesting.. Is that stuff good to eat or just good energy?

  • Man you reallly LOOOVE tuna. :)

  • smart guy

  • Where did you purchase the Jif portion cup of PB? And also the Ocean Spray drink mix? At Wal Mart?

    thanks

  • I didn't know there was foil packaged tuna and chicken, thats awesome!!! thanks

  • Love your videos. I actually take most of what you listed in sealed packs as well. The ramen i get is 36 for $4.34 at sams. If you like sazon (goya brand) they are 99 cents for a box or 6 packs, they are great flavor at 150mg of sodium compared to the 910 mg of sodium in ramen, but i keep the ramen flavor packs too for later use.

  • Packrat - Love the vids.

Question for you: have you ever considered showing, perhaps as an addition to the 72-hour LBE, how to tweak the load-bearing gear for long-term comfort...you know, like adding a kidney pad, swapping out the rear clips (which rub against a pack) with para cord, and the all-powerful 100-mph tape? Just a thought. Happy posting!

  • Best backpacking food idea video ive seen so far, appreciate it

  • Where do you get the Tyson chicken ?

  • great vid

  • lol, no dried fruit or fruit leather? Just saying, at times, that stuff is better then candy.

  • Good ideas to give people. Also some of the protein bars are really being made better with 20-30 grams of protein now and are all fairly small. I love those little tuna packs too but maybe not the best to take if there are bears around.

  • Good ideas!

For fruit--try some of the new baby food fruits in pouches (cinnamon applesauce, etc) . Great with oatmeal and they have a decent shelf life.

Obviously, raisins in pouches or dried fruits, but the baby food fruits are a good alternative for variety.

  • 7.5 = 7 1/2

  • @maddogtjones Smartass... lol

  • Thanks!

  • The Element of Tuna! sounds like a mage skill lol

  • Tuna is a waste of space. Meals don't matter but calories do. A pack of tuna may come in at 70 calories which simply isn't enough to survive on. Just my 2 cents.

  • I agree, Tuna is a waste of space and weight

  • but it tastes good, and just because your camping dose not mean you have to struggle to survive.

  • what is the song you used in the video dude it really cool

  • Watch the protein poisoning bro, tuna has alot of protein and very little fatty acids to break the protein down.

  • Just for anyone who doesn't like tuna they also do chicken like that its great for some chicken quesadillas or just chicken salad...

  • prices in St Paul, dec 09 3x higher than you said.

food is still edible way beyond the date. I had maltomeal the other day that expired in 2005, tasted fine

chili, and stew are easy to make MRE's of, beans, jerky, spices, dried veggies etc, and go great with rabbit

I never mind adding weight for good food, so carry fresh fruit, and veggies

  • great vid. i also enjoy the salmon pouches. did you ever try them? where did you find the pouches of chicken?

  • wal-mart of course

  • thanks man, i really like how u dont talk to us like we were ass holes. i thought thats real cool

  • it's not raymen - it's rah - men

  • RAYMEN noodles are garbage... not real food at all...

  • your a loser

  • @lalew2 in canada its called mr noodles

  • @lalew2 It's a southern thing...

  • @lalew2 it's not rah-men it's ramen

  • Subscribed!

  • Great tips for the backpack food..Didn't know they had spam packs...Take care...

  • just pack instant noodles, energy bar/granola and bumblebee tuna with some crackers if you can't afford MRE's.

  • ramen isnt really good, almonds or other nuts, and even if you eat good food, a mulitvitamin is also great

  • dude i just had a 4 egg(white) chocofalavoured protein shake and u made me hungry with this :p

  • what do prefeer for breakfast and dessert

  • on long backpack, I take chocolate whey protien powder. It is cheap if you buy it from Costco.

  • good stuff man, thanks.

  • don't that chicken need to be refrigerated? I have never seen chicken on the shelf.

  • its in water an stuff sooo no lol

  • I'll have to look for it next time I'm at commie mart.

  • another weird thing tht i have in a kit of mine for hunting is just some dog food

it has all the nutrients and stuff and when your done with all the good stuff youl have something that you wont want to eat right away so youll have it longer too :)

  • now thats just nasty mate. thats just nasty.

  • but think about it if u had to wouldnt u??? and if u had other food along with you u would eat tht stuff first

and prolly fast and you would slowlyy eat it . i hope i never have to but if i had too i would

  • gross

  • yeah its the way they package them so... no

  • Unless I'm looking at something different why does it say keep refrigerated?

    it says

    fully cooked diced chicken

    keep refrigerated.

  • I believe it means 1s u open it, Keep refriderated.

    But im not really sure.

  • i went looking for the chicken the other day and did find it on the shelf so ok i believe you guys now lol.

  • It's canned.

  • A very helpful video PR. Some very good ideas for my next trip. Im hungry now after watching that lol.

    Thanks for sharing bud.

  • Glad to have the opportunity! I am happy the ideas were helpful for you. Thanks for watching!

  • @PackRat556 Why not just buy a box of the stovetop its cheaper compared to the amount you get plus you remove it from the cup anyway.

  • @PackRat556 you rock your the best

  • Hi I am 11 and I have a really good meal for you.Buy a 6.4 oz tuna pack and some mayo and sweet realish/picles/both.And some quackers.mix the souce/picles/both with the tuna and place some quackers on top and cover the whole tuna top and start smashing them together with the thing your gonna eat it wit*spoons work best*and then stir it up takes 5 minutes and the resuilts are the quackers are like inside the tuna and it tastes really good!I hope if you try it you will like it like my family!:)

  • I do not know if where you live you have Aldis and Dollar General. I have found awsome stuff at those places. I have a thing for beef jerky and both places have great deals on it. Aldis is great for home food storage. Those drink flavor packs are AWSOME. It beats iodine taste or any other odors in the water. Don't forget the sweets, sweets are good on those long days when blood sugar drops. Sucks to allmost fall asleep while looking for firewood lol.

  • I do have those stores locally and I agree. There are great deals there if you shop often. Thanks for watching and sharing!

  • coll video and I'm hella down with that chicken. Im going to look for some.

  • Thanks, Good luck!

  • @PackRat556 ...Hey PackRat, excellent video. Do you have video on what food to put in a small pack, like a Camelback or a small daypack like just for a day hike? If you don't, would you consider doing one? I am not into taking a really big pack, so I am very limited on room. But then I want to be prepared in case something happens and I am stuck for more than just a day. Thanks and keep up the good work.

  • Thanks for the video. That's quite nice... I wish there was Walmart in Norway. The super markets over here don't exactly have a huge selection of different products. So far I've only seen Tuna in cans. Might work to take the tuna out of the can and vacuum seal it in a bag. By the way, is there a certain vacuum sealer you would recommend? In which price range are they normally?

  • Mine is a Food Saver brand unit and it has been great. I have had it over 2 years with no problems. With all the accessories it cost around a $100.00 new. I have seen some lately for between $69.00 - $99.00 that looked to be good products. Careful about vacuum sealing tuna from the can. I think you would have to refrigerate it to avoid it spoiling. The commercial packing process is a bit more involved than just vacuum sealing the meat. Good luck with this if you get yourself a sealer!

  • tuna good price bad. I am thinking about giving the 2400 cal bars a try for my 1 week kit. in addition to tuna and raman and stuff.

  • True, it is cheaper in the can but the foil packs are still cheaper than MRE's or dehydrated camp food. The bars are a great addition to your kit, but a good warm hearty meal is great for morale, and that is essential in stressful times. I buy 2 to 3 packs every trip to the store. That way I don't notice the cost as much. Over time, you will have a decent supply on hand. Take Care.

  • This is a great video! thanks for sharing your ideas!

  • It's a pleasure to have the opportunity to share. I appreciate your support.

  • ramen = raw men not ray men

  • Oodles of Noodles

  • how would you cook or prepare the white chicken... PPPPPPPPLLLLLLLZZZZZZZZZ do a vid !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thanks for the info on the packs of tuna i went out and got sum and brought it on a small hike over the weekend it was pretty tasty thanks again

  • Great! I am glad that they worked for you. I went to the store the other day to buy more tuna packs and they were sold out!! Wonder who bought it all LOL! Just kidding. I did get more packs of ready rice made by Uncle Ben's though. Try that too, b/c it is great paired w/ the tuna or chicken.

  • Your video are well made and quite addicted, I just watched height of them in a row, I like the content, you have some good ideas and informations. Also like your accent and the way you speak and the way you made your video with the music and such.

I just subscribed and cant wait to see more from you.

Keep on the good works, and thanks for sharing with us.

  • I really appreciate that! I am motivated by people like yourself who share the same interests as me and who enjoy seeing my videos. I hope that the content of my videos can help others as I have learned so much from others who have been willing to share their knowledge with me. Take Care.

  • How do you make the tuna do you add water what???

  • These packs are fully hydrated, no water needed. I personally prefer the tuna from these packs over the tuna in the can b/c you don't have to drain water off if you make tuna salad, it is already a perfect consistency. If you like tuna, try these packs, you will like them.

  • I love tuna and this is an amazing idea I would of never though of that. Thanks

  • Thanks, this is one that I have been experimenting with for a while and it works great for me. One of the other viewers hamm336 I believe mentioned the uncle bens rice that is packed in a similar way. I have also tried this recently and it is good to use with these meals as well. Good luck with it.

  • if you love peanut butter on the trail like i do. then try a reusable squeeze tube for it.. i use a few 2oz tubes cost me 1.50 for all three

great for a quick lunch while not stopping

  • Thanks for the idea!

  • love your channel man, your videos have been alot of help to me trying to but together a BOB and other survival gear. Thanks

  • I am very glad they have helped you. That is what motivates me. So many others have shared with me so I feel I too should share what I have learned with others. Thanks for watching and for commenting!

  • Really enjoyed this video allot of great ideas. Got me to subscribe

  • Thank you! I appreciate your interest and support. Hope to have some new videos coming soon. Take Care.

  • aint nuthing like ramen noodles bro... the meat packs are good also.. and the best thing is they are light weight... thanks for the vids...

  • I appreciate the support! Ramen is probably penny for penny the best food value on the market! I would not eat it daily though, too much sodium. They are delicious on a cold day!

  • Great Ideas Pack Rat 556. I really like how you can now get the tuna packets versus the cans. I have used those for about 2 years now and its great. Keep up the good videos!

  • Thanks a lot! I appreciate you continuing to watch and support my channel! In all honesty, I like the tuna from the packet better than from the can b/c I don't have to drain off all the water to make tuna salad at home! If you buy the can, the tuna packed in vegetable oil tastes good once you drain it but is not as healthy. I love tuna so I'll eat all of it!

  • Great ideas PackRat556

Picked up some of the same items just the other day. Love the stove top idea. I'll have to add that to my pack as well. Keep up the great videos buddy.

  • Thank you for your comment, I appreciate your interest and support!

  • I got these at Food Lion, but I think I also saw them at Wal-Mart last time I was there. They are very convenient.

  • Where do you get the Jif-To-Go packages?

  • I use the SPAM packets myself, but had not heard of the individual Jif packs. I don't like Tuna, and tried the Salmon packs by them as well, but they were too fishy for me. I will have to try the chicken packets, if I find them.

  • The chicken is good. I think you would like it. The brand I use is Tyson. It should be available at your local Wal-Mart. Good Luck.

  • great vid. FYI - Uncle Ben's rice makes a microwaveable precook rice pkt's just like your tuna. Even tho it say Microwave it can be heated in boling water or eated cold. Most of the packet foods will last longer then the exp date. they are pack the same as MRE. keep up the good videos. Keep Rocking Hamm336

  • Great Idea! I totally forgot about those but I will be buying some on my next shopping trip. With that, the meal would be basically an MRE. Thanks for Sharing.

  • try getting cliff bars at costco. Its 15 bucks for 18 of them, and they are 60% organic (somewhere around there). good energy bar IMO

  • Good idea! I like Cliff bars, my favorite one is the oatmeal raisin walnut bar. Thanks for watching!

  • Great video! I love the retort packages of tuna. You can even find the tuna packs at some dollar stores. I know Walmart even has chicken in retort packages like that as well. A little rice and tuna or chicken is awesome!

  • Thanks! You're right, there are are some really good deals on these products and you can find them at the dollar store if you get lucky. (I believe you have a great video on some deals that can be had from dollar stores, right?)
