but that the soul of Pink Floyd! what else is!? go to Lisbon to eat a nice pastel de nata a good port wine and everything else will actually have shit
just to clarify i wasn't condoning syd's out of control behavior. he was a complete idiot for touching any sort of contraband in the first place. just felt it was worth noting that he was different to begin with, which is why he was so brilliant.
And lastly, let's not forget, that the rest of the band did not HATE Syd.
Yes, there were clearly many frustrations for the members during a time that they were trying to 'make it', but it never quite managed to sour they're relationship entirely. You see that especially in interviews with Richard Wright and Dave Gilmour. Waters and Mason were always a little more reserved ;-).
Syd for many also represented the guy that didn't quite fit the mould and so a lot of fans identify with his disconnected state within society and it's that emotional bond that fans have with him, that keeps his flame burning so bright.
Dave Gilmour, was a friend of Syd Barret's and so it automatically fell on Dave to step in for Syd (even before Syd left). SO, it was almost by association that Dave fell in with the band, not saying it's the only reason, as that boy can play guitar like no other man, and Dave's guitar work then helped maneuver the band's sound toward it's conclusion.
Go check out Pink Floyd - Piper And At The Gates Of Dawn & Saucer Full Of Secrets .
Both penned by Syd (the latter mostly). Also stars him on lead guitar. A great example of English Freakout Psychedelia would be Interstellar Overdrive and Astronomy Domine, both on Piper.
With his lyrics best described by such songs as Scarecrow and Bike.
Any psychedelic music on PF later albums are traces of syd. He wrote music like this and the band continued specially roger cause they were very close. just listen to Interstellar Overdrive-Part 1 and youll know what i mean
In my opinion, the best by Pink Floyd is The Piper at the gates of down and A Saucerful of Secrets' Barret's songs, also Paintbox. And even the best after-Barret material was inspired by him.
@joethulhuz Syd is rumoured to have had a hand in "Point Me to the Sky" but didn't get credit for. I bet that's true of a lot of stuff PF did in 1968--more than we'll know at this point. Shine On!!
@chaimyamin Nah, I can tell by listening to the song he had nothing to do with it. He played on most of the Saucerful album, though. Particularly Corporal Clegg and Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, plus three others or so that I can't quite remember at the moment. But he did no more writing for the band.
Syd actually had many emotional problems before experimenting with LSD. His father died when he was only 15. It is a lie to say Syd blew his mind with acid because he is considered a musical guenius.
Respond to this video... Ok ive read enough BS about Syd here.Writing songs does not make you a genius clearly, look around you their are loads of great songs everywhere, what does make Syd a musical genius is that he defined a genre that quintisential english psychedelic sound that is unique to Barrett.Listen to bands from every era after Syd up till today and you'll hear it everywhere. The biggest crime was that Pink Floyd stole Syd's musical innovation and labelled him a useless junkie.Shame!

I will be cordial with you. Not only did Syd Barrett come up with the name for Pink Floyd, he was the one who spearheaded the band early on. It was his material which first put them onto the charts, when they were a "pop singles" band, and he had some very good ideas in his songwriting. He was just disappointed with life as a "star." @rvkfc71 if you wanna get technical gilmour did teach him mostly everything he knew about guitar. syd and david were great friends for a while back in cambridge and the reason gilmour joined floyd is because syd had him come to the studio all the time then when they all realized his hectic erratic behavior was getting to be a little too much and his mind was slowly fading into a whole new reality they had to move on and they chose dave to take the spot.
@LysergicBliss67 I did know that Syd and Dave were friends from Cambridge but I didn´t know that David taught him guitar. Thanks for telling me ;) I also heard that the group then decided to not pickup Syd and go all out with Dave. Kinda feel bad for Syd.
@rvkfc71 i'll say it again. He ( and his Floyd, who by the way couldn't really write songs and thus tinkered in songwriting for the next 30 years...sorry- actually RichardWright wrote a couple of very good ones 67-68) worked their arses off, with averagely 20 gigs a month up to and after Piper at The Gates of Dawn was released.right up to when Syd 'left'. Sheer hard work and finely-honed inspiration . Songs don't write themselves and gigs are hard work...road miles etc. It was a full time job !

@lesterknome and i hope your fucken kids drown u stupid motherfucker get over it , i can have my opinion Syd Barrett sucks ass fuck you and anyone else who who has anything to say about.
@thatguy1098 because i like pink floyd and i wanted to check this guy out but syd barrett is awful everybody is acting as if it wherent for syd barrett David Gilmour would have never been born. David Gilmour is a rock n roll hall of famer and this bum isn't and that's the bottom line take it up the ass if you choose to.
@MrWildboy214 who gives a shit about the hall of fame. like the whole thing was around when rock n roll still mattered. rock n roll is about bands playing music and crowds in front of them losing their minds, nothing else. yes david gilmour is a great player but let it be that way cuz of the chills that run down ur spine from his guitar solos and because he is made a royalty because of it.
@AlAllerton Fuck you thats my opinion if you dont like it then go jump off a bridge i said it once and ill say it again this guy sucks dont come at me with that back and forth bullshit either
@MrWildboy214 Are you one of those little faggots who cry when they see justin beiber cause it REALLY seems like you are, listen to some real music respect Syd comon' the dude passed away
@MrWildboy214 You realize if they could every remaining member of Pink Floyd would ban you from ever listening to their music again right? Syd Barrett's genius was on par with the greatest songwriters of all time, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Pete Townshend, and Jimi Hendrix would all agree. They didn't want Syd to leave the band, they had to do it or else they wouldn't have been able to continue. And anyway, he lost his mind largely due to the fact that his mind was clinically abnormal to start
if you like syd's music, please check out my music! Search for Roger Delarge on facebook or youtube! Syd is my favorite artist and a huge inspiration for me! thanks ;)
Syd apparently had Synesthesia, that is he perceived music as colours. Which is why he was artistic in other ways such as being a painter. This is such a simple composition and that's the beauty which permeates most of his music; it retains a whimsical simplicity and a childlike delight which stops it sounding dated. Ray Davies had that talent songwriting with The Kinks too. The fact Syd's influences were Belloc, Hillaire, Lewis Carroll and Kenneth Grahame says a lot. True genius, albeit briefly
I really love a lot of Syd's songs, but people project so much.
.
A lot of the mythos around him I actually find quite shallow - just two things - excessive drug consumption & popstar-style looks. If you look at him - I mean really look, beneath the nice hair, bone structure & occasional eye makeup, you can see a grumpy old man. Which is what he became, of course, but even in those early photos, you can see it.
.
I think if you withdraw an element of yourself, other parts can start to take over.
Sure, but I've heard "grumpy old man" comments about Kurt Cobain as well, and thought of it myself about Dylan, Lennon, John Frusciante, they've all at times, felt that way. And, so do we. Syd had an old soul, and that's what makes his music attractive. All those people I mentioned, and many more, were played out as pop stars, but knew far more about life to be that shallow. Barrett certainly fits that bill as a true genious. God bless him for it.
Yes, there's an amazing freshness to his music - like a structure that's a bit ramshackle and run-down, and so it just has this fresh breeze blowing clean thru it. Like a cottage that becomes continuous with the countryside.
Barrett was a very misunderstood man! That is why people from all ages listen to his music to find the piece of genuis, but without succes. Cheers to those who hear this acid man singing! Лека ти пръст Сид! (Rest In Peace Syd).
TheArkansasHillbilly: I'm surprised you have the time to post any messages on You Tube sites. Between your slopping the hogs and cousin and sister loving you must be awfully tired at the end of the day.
@bongrocker I 'll do my loving in the winteeeeeeer . Was not able to fully understand Syd's lyrics , until i had my share of psychedelics in order to experience what insanity really is .
rest peacefully

Also, lets not forget that tribute concerts held after the death of an artist would not be held if said artist purely
came of with the name of the band and nothing else. A great musician, a great painter, a great songwriter.
The point at which I don't agree with the others, is the issue of drugs.
I don't think drugs necessarily make good music. If you're a crap songwriter, your a crap songwriter.

MrWildboy214 5 months ago
@MrWildboy214 why are you watching a Syd Barrett video if you hate him so much?
thatguy1098 5 months ago
@thatguy1098 because i like pink floyd and i wanted to check this guy out but syd barrett is awful everybody is acting as if it wherent for syd barrett David Gilmour would have never been born. David Gilmour is a rock n roll hall of famer and this bum isn't and that's the bottom line take it up the ass if you choose to.
MrWildboy214 5 months ago
@MrWildboy214 who gives a shit about the hall of fame. like the whole thing was around when rock n roll still mattered. rock n roll is about bands playing music and crowds in front of them losing their minds, nothing else. yes david gilmour is a great player but let it be that way cuz of the chills that run down ur spine from his guitar solos and because he is made a royalty because of it.

If you really did "like Pink Floyd",
you'd know what you said was unmitigatedly preposterous.
Your time would be better spent educating yourself, rather than trolling youtube kid.

Which is what he became, of course, but even in those early photos, you can see it.
.
I think if you withdraw an element of yourself, other parts can start to take over.
roquefort88888 1 year ago
@roquefort88888
God bless him for it.
mussman717word 1 year ago
@mussman717word
Yes, there's an amazing freshness to his music - like a structure that's a bit ramshackle and run-down, and so it just has this fresh breeze blowing clean thru it. Like a cottage that becomes continuous with the countryside.
