i agree with everyone saying they miss the laughter track.
Normally i cant bare watching shows with them, but shows like blackadder and red dawrf were made funnier with them, it just worked.
Also i think if you put a laughing track in one series and people get used to it, you cant change it and take it away . It just gives the sense something is missing.
Awful script, awful story idea and just an all-round terrible example of how bad Red Dwarf became. A crying shame as this was a show I grew up loving. At least we still have series 1-6.

@gaozhi2007 I think its a bit harsh to call it a shitstorm, yes it wasnt an overwhelmingly good come back episode but the only real falldown was in the choice to make massive in jokes about the reality of red dwarf as a sitcom and breaking the 4th wall, the squid shouldve triggered something less self referential, apart from that the jokes are standard dwarf and all that was missing was the laugh track...

I agree that the writing and acting are just as good as before but due to fashion, the kitsch factor has been dropped which is a shame. The laughter track was missed and I dont normally like laughter tracks, but it sat well in things like Red Dwarf and Blackadder.

He was a stupid slob and still was in 6. But in 7, he changed a little. Love every series of red dwarf though, I do like that it's a series constantly taking chances. Every series is very different.

Yep, needs a laughter track, mixed/balanced well together with the dialogue like in the series' of old. Camera work and effects need to be less fancy too. It's all too superficial and detracts. Keep it lofi and intimate like the best of the Dwarf!!
The story is good for this series IX, but they don't have the energy or the magic they did in the previous series. Hopefully the next 2 series will be good though, though I'm dubious, - maybe it's something which is worth a go, but perhaps really should be left in it's current legacy. Who knows. I'll be keeping tabs on Charles especially from the moment he leaves corrie.

As much as I wanted to love this new comeback, Craig Charles ruined it for me. It's like his role in Coronation St has corrupted his Lister. I keep expecting Steve McDonald to wander in asking where his taxi is.

it doesn't make a difference if there is no laugh track - its still well written with good punchlines and one liners. Conceptually its one of the best alternative reality storyines red dwarf has done. later series are hit and miss but this three parter is pretty good

wow, all those times i got annoyed by the canned laughter, but without it it just doesnt seem quite right, but im not minding it... and just to clear the non existance of the continuality, personally, while the eighth series had its moments, you could pretty much tell that it was on its last legs and so i think having it back to the way it was for most of the airing of the show, lister, rimmer (hologram), cat and kryten was probably a good idea i think
Maybe making this as a 3 parter it should have been a tv movie. that way you wont be left with rather crapciff hanger endings that might make u give watching the rest a miss. like what should have been done with series 8 ep 1,2 &3 back in the red which was originally meant to be a 1 hour or whatever special.
It's a well-known fact that Rob & Doug *did* utilize *lots* of "parralel universe" scenarios in their Dwarf novelizations..such as the one where in the Gunmen/Apocalypse scenario Kryten & Rimmer perish, and Lister & The Cat escape to another dimension just before their ship is destroyed; In said dimension they meet up with a still-surviving Kryten & Lister...whilst *that universe's Cat & Lister were killed..
Just a theory about how *this* story might transpire, m8's...
I really hope they do a little explaining about what happened in those 9 years. I mean, the crew that was resurrected is now gone. Where in helll did they all go, heck they aren't even acting like the crew was ever brought back.

I dont think Rimmer did die in the fire, I reckon with him referencing old memories and adventures they had, this is the old Rimmer (who left to be Ace Rimmer in series 7). He must have came back coz he recalls old adventures they had pre-series 6 and is a hologram again.

wow, all those times i got annoyed by the canned laughter, but without it it just doesnt seem quite right, but im not minding it... and just to clear the non existance of the continuality, personally, while the eighth series had its moments, you could pretty much tell that it was on its last legs and so i think having it back to the way it was for most of the airing of the show, lister, rimmer (hologram), cat and kryten was probably a good idea i think

Maybe making this as a 3 parter it should have been a tv movie. that way you wont be left with rather crapciff hanger endings that might make u give watching the rest a miss. like what should have been done with series 8 ep 1,2 &3 back in the red which was originally meant to be a 1 hour or whatever special.

It's a well-known fact that Rob & Doug *did* utilize *lots* of "parralel universe" scenarios in their Dwarf novelizations..such as the one where in the Gunmen/Apocalypse scenario Kryten & Rimmer perish, and Lister & The Cat escape to another dimension just before their ship is destroyed; In said dimension they meet up with a still-surviving Kryten & Lister...whilst *that universe's Cat & Lister were killed..
Just a theory about how *this* story might transpire, m8's...

I really hope they do a little explaining about what happened in those 9 years. I mean, the crew that was resurrected is now gone. Where in helll did they all go, heck they aren't even acting like the crew was ever brought back.
Oh well, it's still funny and it's still red dwarf!

I dont think Rimmer did die in the fire, I reckon with him referencing old memories and adventures they had, this is the old Rimmer (who left to be Ace Rimmer in series 7). He must have came back coz he recalls old adventures they had pre-series 6 and is a hologram again.

Only Rimmer and Kryton seem to be up to scratch with their parts, craig charles is a shadow of Listers character and Cat is disappointing too.
It's basically bland.

The intro was flat and felt like it struggled to go along, but it definitely got better in parts 2 and 3. I miss the laughter track though.

This annoys me. The never used "canned" laughter in RD, they showed it or filmed before an audience.

Well, your right yes, but in some later ones they did infact use some laugh tracks, but yeah for the most part I reckon it was infront of a live audience, you always hear one guy gasping to breathe and it makes it even more funny xD
Basically it sucks without laughter IMO :)

Oh no worries. I kind of exagerated there, you didn't annoy me really. :-)
I think in later ones they did show it to an audience (pre filmed) but obviously edited there laughter so it cuts out when the next character starts speaking etc.
