Loved the movie but found it very unrealistic that we could understand what they are saying. Not that we are unable to learn new languages, but all languages that can be learned need to have dialect, syllables and discernible pronunciation. Possibly a machine could try to translate it with their help, but understanding them face to face would be like understanding whale language, which has more dialect than the Aliens gurgle noise and we cannot do that yet.
There has GOT to be a sequel. Too many people liked it and it's too original and awesome of a premise and they left you on such a cliffhanger that you KNOW there's going to be a sequel.
Sharlto Copley is up for Sci-Fi Actor and District 9 is up for Sci-Fi film at the Teen Choice Awards. I know it's no Oscar but D9 and especially Sharlto deserve at least one award commemorating their work. It'd be great if people went to the TCA site and voted once a day.

The ending is supposed to be ambiguous. Sometimes its best when you dont know all the facts, then you can use your imagination. And with the interrogation scene, well sometimes scenes get cut out. They might be in the trailer, but sometimes they are removed before the final cut.
at the end of the movie movie wikus' wife finds a little flower made from bits of garbage on her doorstep and if you remember in the begining of the movie she says how wikus is always making her little arts and crafts, she even shows some to the camera, after the scene where shes talking about the flower you see a prawn making a flower out of bits of garbage, that prawn is wikus, hes completely turned into a prawn and the flower is his way of letting his wife know hes still alive
@Sikenfere you do see him turn into an alien, pay attention to the final scene.. when he makes that origami thingo for his wife, you see her talking about someone leaving it at the front door, then you see footage of an alien making the origami (which is obviously Wikus) and oh yeah also, wtf i never saw the interrogation scene in the movie...

This is the best trailer I have ever seen. The first 20 seconds is absolutely phenomenal... the music is so perfect. Only thing I hate about this trailer is the interrogation scene(it gives away too much information).

I guess what I'm trying to get at is, how did humans pick up on an alien language that we have never heard before? we have no way of saying "oh 'click click' means this"? our languages have been around for a long ass time and most originated from ancient languages. this is an alien race with a completely different origin and way of communicating.
We would pick up the alien language the same way that we have picked up all foreign languages, by observing how the people who use the language interact with each other and how the foreign sounds relate to those interactions.
You do know that it's easier to learn a foreign language by emerging yourself in a culture that speaks the language than it is to learn from a book, don't you, punkify?

Watch it again... Wikus clearly speaks their language. The scene where he serves Christopher his eviction clearly shows that. If what you say is correct, why wasn't he amazed/frightened by the fact that "all of a sudden" he could understand them
District 9 was unique and innovative. I feel that the director achieved his goal, and got his point across without being to preachy. I actually cared more for the Prawns then the hateful Humans, especially for Christopher and his son. I also loved how the Prawn were strong but very vulnerable to bullets. I also feel that this is a very realistic depiction of what would happen if aliens were really stuck on earth.
Ooo.. perhaps to look deeper, it already speaks of what has already happened on this earth in countless places. THINK OF THE APARTHEID, or what has been going on in race relations in the very country that I live in. This is a commentary on the war on people of color. and how hard it is to feel that things will ever be equal. We were forced into poverty from the very start, and I'm not sure if there will be any hope in the U.S.

WTF??! You must have missed the point. There are like 3 action scenes, most of which are filling in the hardcore, well, actions needed at hand. MOST of the film is drama, not as tense as you may have wanted, but come ON.... Sitting in the voodoo guru's hut twice, BOTH times were energetic and unexpected, (the first time was kind of actiony) but I really think that this movie has deeper messages than you took away from it, which is no insult I mean it took me a whole day to find the bible in it!

When I said EASTERN, my meaning was directed towards hemispheres. The Americas are included in the Western Hemisphere. Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia are included in the Eastern Hemisphere.
Actually, there is a course of resolution, but this ideaology relies on the concept of co-dependentcy & faith: Wikus putting his trust (co-dependent) in Chris that he will come back to reverse his transformation & faith in that when & if he does come back - Chris' return is not in vain, but to honor their agreement (despite turning on him, knocking him out, and crashing an aircraft w/ his son inside) that he may honor their agreement, so that Wikus can resume his former life/reunite marriage.
When I said resolution, I meant one for the broader societal problems this film is representing, not the storyline of the film exactly. And I understand now what you mean by Eastern; that was my bad. ;D
i just saw the movie and i give it 4 & 3/4 stars out of 5. I agree w/ gomptwoky - EASTERN setting was a cool change of scenery. There was a bit of irony in this movie: how the aliens were insect-like & how their weapons caused their victims caused them to splatter like bugs. It would be wrong if a sequel doesn't follow this movie; Winis has fully transformed and is awaiting for 'Chris Johnson' to return; but will he want to (descend) back to his human form?
I think a sequel would ruin the movie. Part of the appeal for me was the allegorical xenophobia theme with no solid resolution that left you wonder how things would eventually play out. These issues haven't been solved in the real world, so I don't see why there would be a followup to resolve it for us.
Also, what do you mean by 'eastern'? This was set in S. Africa. :/
This movie is phenominal! And there's an easter egg... watch towards the invsion to the MNU building... they pass through a scanner and it's labels TETRA VAAL Bioscanner... a top to his short film re: a mechanized police support unit in JHB! SWEET!

Ever since reading Ender's Game. I've yet to see cinema conjure an image as horrifying as the idea of alien weapons that boil a man's brain so that it oozes out of his ears and makes his skull crack and pop open like jiffy pop cooked too long. From what i hear, this film will do that.

the movie is bout a guy named winis i think i cant remember and hes in charge of evicting these aliens wen some can sprays him in the face with a liquid. after that him and christiphor(alien) must get the can bak from athoroties be winis get compleatly changed into a alien because of the liquid, so they blow shit up and get the liquid and winnis is a half alien by now and chris go into a little ship burried under his house, uses the can, and fly back to the mother ship to :save his people:

Watch it again... Wikus clearly speaks their language. The scene where he serves Christopher his eviction clearly shows that. If what you say is correct, why wasn't he amazed/frightened by the fact that "all of a sudden" he could understand them

This movie was absolutely fantastic
District 9 was unique and innovative. I feel that the director achieved his goal, and got his point across without being to preachy. I actually cared more for the Prawns then the hateful Humans, especially for Christopher and his son. I also loved how the Prawn were strong but very vulnerable to bullets. I also feel that this is a very realistic depiction of what would happen if aliens were really stuck on earth.
Fantastic film 9/10 :)

Ooo.. perhaps to look deeper, it already speaks of what has already happened on this earth in countless places. THINK OF THE APARTHEID, or what has been going on in race relations in the very country that I live in. This is a commentary on the war on people of color. and how hard it is to feel that things will ever be equal. We were forced into poverty from the very start, and I'm not sure if there will be any hope in the U.S.

Whats pathetic is with the very small amount of brains you actually have you can't possibly understand that if aliens were here they would without a doubt enslave us using their technology, eat us, rape us, use us as entertainment, mindf**k us. yeah the movie was good, BUT i feel like it was not advertised for what it really was.... i thought it'd be a little more dramatic/tense, but it was mostly an action flick (which is fine, but not like this preview)

I agree. Just saw it. I loved it, but this trailer is a bit misleading. It started out with the documentary/drama type of a film and then it turned into an action flick.
But it was still a fantastic and Very, very deep action flick.

WTF??! You must have missed the point. There are like 3 action scenes, most of which are filling in the hardcore, well, actions needed at hand. MOST of the film is drama, not as tense as you may have wanted, but come ON.... Sitting in the voodoo guru's hut twice, BOTH times were energetic and unexpected, (the first time was kind of actiony) but I really think that this movie has deeper messages than you took away from it, which is no insult I mean it took me a whole day to find the bible in it!

When I said EASTERN, my meaning was directed towards hemispheres. The Americas are included in the Western Hemisphere. Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia are included in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Actually, there is a course of resolution, but this ideaology relies on the concept of co-dependentcy & faith: Wikus putting his trust (co-dependent) in Chris that he will come back to reverse his transformation & faith in that when & if he does come back - Chris' return is not in vain, but to honor their agreement (despite turning on him, knocking him out, and crashing an aircraft w/ his son inside) that he may honor their agreement, so that Wikus can resume his former life/reunite marriage.

i just saw the movie and i give it 4 & 3/4 stars out of 5. I agree w/ gomptwoky - EASTERN setting was a cool change of scenery. There was a bit of irony in this movie: how the aliens were insect-like & how their weapons caused their victims caused them to splatter like bugs. It would be wrong if a sequel doesn't follow this movie; Winis has fully transformed and is awaiting for 'Chris Johnson' to return; but will he want to (descend) back to his human form?

I think a sequel would ruin the movie. Part of the appeal for me was the allegorical xenophobia theme with no solid resolution that left you wonder how things would eventually play out. These issues haven't been solved in the real world, so I don't see why there would be a followup to resolve it for us.
Also, what do you mean by 'eastern'? This was set in S. Africa. :/

Ever since reading Ender's Game. I've yet to see cinema conjure an image as horrifying as the idea of alien weapons that boil a man's brain so that it oozes out of his ears and makes his skull crack and pop open like jiffy pop cooked too long. From what i hear, this film will do that.

I saw it last night and the scene where the alien is being interrogated inst even in the movie. The trailers are slightly misleading to the actual plot but the movie is really well done and entertaining.

the movie is bout a guy named winis i think i cant remember and hes in charge of evicting these aliens wen some can sprays him in the face with a liquid. after that him and christiphor(alien) must get the can bak from athoroties be winis get compleatly changed into a alien because of the liquid, so they blow shit up and get the liquid and winnis is a half alien by now and chris go into a little ship burried under his house, uses the can, and fly back to the mother ship to :save his people:
