  • I will try this. Everything I try to fix the hair with refine edge eraser or whatever it is, I get a haze. Will have to try this masking thing and the history brush. I wish I was better at this! SO fun!

  • I said it in vids before and will keep saying it untill he stops making videos; GO DO VOICE OVERS FOR ANIMATED MOVIES PLEASE!!! :D

  • Wow, I don't understand at all WHY the history brush makes it better. But great tutorial.

  • which photoshop program are u using?!

  • How could anyone dislike this?

  • Thanks Brother This Video Helped me a lot :)

  • Great! Thanks!

  • "I´m Shaun Connery" c´:

  • Simple, clear and to the point. Excellent! Thanks...

  • awesome tutorial

  • that's incredible, i guess i need to upgrade to cs5. wow.

  • I whip my hair back and forth :}

  • awesome tutorial, thanksss :D

  • sir...i have been having a problem for this type of editing...

in the right i can see that u have 2layers with 2 different photos...now whn i try to do this i always get a new photo with only one layer..meaning i either have the beach pic or the original pic in the layer..can u tell me how i get these two layers together???

    thanks in advance..

  • Great vid as always !!!!!

  • Omg thank you!! I've been having this problem forever!

  • I have been using Photoshop for about 12 years now. Often times it will take me a year or so to realize exactly how the new tools work together. When I don't need to ship the client a file with a path this is a great fix for hair or plants, it might even take president over my custom hair brushes! I'm still waiting for the "make path from selection" algorithm to be updated as it still produces some majorly janky paths. Thanks for the tutorial!

  • Awesome edits... Wished that was in Elements too... Keep the blubs in the vids...Nice touch Howard! Peace.

  • I did it!

  • looks great :) the only thing needing more fix is the water reflection on her leg ^^

  • there's some way to do that in Ps cs2??????

    pleaceeee i want it

  • i dont have the refine edge option.. :( now what?

  • i want cs5 :(

  • Oh my god, it's witchcraft!

  • She Looks Like Shes Fingerinq Herself haha

  • @JESUSpin54 iknow ahahah

  • funny voice innit

  • GRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEATTTTTT TUTORIAL, THANKS

  • Your tutorials are so helpful. Ü I hate those stupid videos entitled "how to blah blah blah" but they're actually just recording without giving tips and putting stupid songs. Aren't they suppose to say something? Kinda stupid. Anyway, I'll keep on subscribing. :D Great Videos!

  • This is the best hair tutorial online period

  • i love you

  • wish i was one a bitch...

  • awesome

  • thank you sean connery

  • SOrry if this is a bit off topic, but..... HOTHOTHOTHOTHOTHOT!!! :)

  • Don't forget to play with the levels and curves so the subject fits the background. For example, in this picture, you would remove some blues in order to make the girl have a warmer color so it would simulate sunlight at the beach. Just a tip to something that a lot of the "pro's" tend to forget ;)

  • Can you link us to that picture? please

  • Hishtory. Hish-- I'm Sean Connery!

  • well done. thank you

  • WOW! This is fantastic. And the final result looks great. Also, lol @ this "I really hope she appreciates all I've done for her in the last few minutes. I wish I was on the beach".

  • Wow nice one o.o That's gonne come in handy alot =D

  • Mine didn't really turn out... mehmem..

  • This is a brilliant turorial! Thank you so much.

Saves having to buy plugins that do pretty much the same thing you just demonstrated!

  • Hahaa "Shhhean Connery"

  • hey howard! I was trying to do this at home and everything went well till the history brush part. I went to the history panel and checked the 'open' option, but it wont let me paint over, the mouse turns to a forbiden sign, what should i do? I apologize for my bad english, i'm from Portugal. Thanks in advance!

  • Awesome tut!

  • Select the hish.. Hishtory? I'm Sean Connery.

  • U have progressive bad avertising

  • I don't get the point of the history brush. if you're using it on the actual layer, doesn't it just negate the effects of the 'decontaminate colors'?

  • You rule :D I love your tutorials!!!

  • Faça bons recortes de cabelo em suas fotos.

  • quite scary, i was editing a pic by cutting it out from the background and hair was hard to cut out, i was thinking to ma self, mabye iceflow studios could help me out :O and haha!

  • @gazaweb hahaha thats awesome.

  • thanks good tutorial!!

  • omg this is awesome! thanks!

  • Awesome! Thanks so much!

  • Great tutorial, dude!

  • Something is missing to me... There should be a step lost during the tutorial... I've the same trouble with the "Hystory tool" and I don't understand if and where I do mistakes... :(

  • @Bukaniere: Got it!!! :) Now I understood the missing pieces... You have missed the first two or three passages, but we can catch them reading the first Hystory panel shown! ;)

  • Comment removed

  • that was smart.

  • Very nice. I have tried this before and got frustrated with the result. Skin would get opaque in places, etc.

I will have to try this method "to the T" to see if it works out for me.

    Thanks!

  • i love that one! a great work, really!

  • Awesome.

  • Wish I could plug in USB and download your knowledge.. Thanks so much for sharing!

  • Im sean connery. LOL!

  • Why didn't you put a bed as the background? That would suite her more.

  • I am on a horse.

  • WHO DISLIKED THIS VID. SHOW YOUR SELF SO I CAN SMACK YOU LOL

  • Awesome tutorial, i liked your last comment - lols.

But where is it that you find you're pictures? I am editting myself, but i've got a few issues finding a picture that i can edit.

  • hey Sean, a great tutorial as allways

  • yeah... i realy need this. Thanks again.

  • Awesome Tip! the history brush will work great :)

  • I'm trying to select an image with lots of small gaps on a white background (like the hair in this photo) and paste it into another image. Even though it's on a transparent background a white one appears when I copy and paste.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

  • "Look at me. Look down. Now look back at me. I'm on a.. beach."

  • Thank you this is soooo AWESOME

  • I wish I was on the beach...

  • Is she touching herself!?

  • one of the best tutorials so far.. keep up the good work! :)

  • Great video and I'm always amazed by the things that Photoshop can do. WOW

  • Good as always, thanks a lot!

  • I laughed so hard at the blooper at the end and very helpful tool, when you first did this in a tutorial I tried to use it and ended up with some of the model gone or extra selections, thanks for this tutorial it helped a lot!

  • "HOW DOES PHOTOSHOP DO THAT???"

    LOL im getting cs5

  • you're the best...thanks for tut..

  • Excellent video. All of your tutorials are incredibly helpful. I've learned soo much watching them. Keep up the good work!

  • Wow great vid i've been missing out on the power of the history brush all this time and trying to create a better mask which is mind numbing. This is awesome man you deserve a medal.

  • Best line in the video: "I really hope she appreciates all I've done for her in the last few minutes". Totally sounds like he's talking about something else. :)

  • "..some of them are specific to photoshop cs5 ONLY.." GRAAAAAAHHHH!! T_T

  • wow iv never had a clue how to do this

  • Something that might help with the confusion I am seeing that Howard didn't mention. Make sure the base document is the model you want to extract. Then make a new layer and put the background in. Then re-arrange the order. If you don't, the history brush will try to sample the background instead of the model. Thx

  • Great vid! I wish I were on a beach too :)

  • thank you thank you, THANK YOU !!

  • Is she...masturbating?

  • nice, thanks !

  • You are SO helpful can't thank you enough and I love your voice! ;)

  • LOL, I'm Sean Connery! :D

Nice tutorial by the way, as usual!

  • awesome! good tut!

  • You are a god

  • I'm having the same problem as @andres4me, done nothing with the background layer, after reading your comment tried duplicating, removing, placing but still no joy before and after the rest still with no joy...

  • amazing results!

  • Mind Blown. Thanks for this!

  • Im Sean Connery, nice comment :-) Great video!

  • This is exactly what i was looking for. Thanks Howard :)

  • Photoshop god, you are. - Yoda

  • I find it LOLish that in the tags you have, bikini, sexy and woman(?) I think, I can't remember the last one cuz I'm on my iPod and can just look up

  • Your tutorials are amazing.

  • Your so great! Love these kind of videos :D

  • Love the Outtakes at the end.... more of them, and tanks for your awesome help

  • why does she keep her hand in her vagina?

  • You are a star!!!! I'm learning how to use Photoshop by watching your videos!!!

    Do you use Illustrator?

  • Excellent and funny tutorial, thanks man.

  • That was awesome!:)

  • Awesome tip, thanks!

  • @IceflowStudios hey now at least is was just the word history you were saying with a Sean Connery accent and not the word City!

  • Another thing someone might consider is blurring the background because, it a REAL photo, the palm trees obviously wouldn't be in perfect focus. I know that wasn't the point of the tutorial but I think it's worth mentioning.

  • GREAT VIDEO thank you

  • you're a genius man thank you

  • I've always wondered how to do this!

  • these tutorials make me lol cuz i thot photoshop 7 was awesome cuz ive been using it at school and then i switched to cs5 and was like holy shit big difference-coulda used this for a school assignment a while ago but 7 is kinda crap XP so i had to do something else

  • IT'S MAGICAL

  • great tutorial.

people use to take much longer videos to do worse.

  • Wow, this channel is pretty much changing my life :P thanks

  • CS2 no quick selection tool :(

  • @noelsoong777 Time to upgrade. :)

  • @IceflowStudios OR you could just learn how to effectively use feathered selections and masks. I have been working with hair like this for over 10 years now, and we didn't have these fancy CS5 features back then.

  • @Ozzah But now we DO have these "fancy cs5 features" so why not learn how to use these to get quicker and better results. You dont still get from place to place with a horse and cart do you? unless you are Amish, in which case i apologize for the offence caused.

  • @AREASHIFTYONE You need to think about the target audience of these videos. The set of people who can afford to continuously upgrade to the latest version of photoshop is probably limited to professional designers. Those people probably wouldn't be watching these videos since they surely already know 99% of the stuff which has been discussed. I know I do, and I don't even work in graphics. So these videos target more casual users, who would be unlikely to regularly upgrade given the steep price.

  • @Ozzah What about ther people that have bought cs5 and are also beginners? I don't think we can assume that all people who aren't advanced photoshop users only have cs3 or lower. As howard says in the top comments "time to upgrade" and i think thats quite a common thing to have to do when we are talking computer software/hardware etc. Now of course if you do have cs2 then you will have to specifically search for cs2 tuts, just as you would if you wanted to look up anything that isnt brand new.

  • @Ozzah Let's be honest, most people using Photoshop never paid for it. If you plan to make money with it, then you should most certainly pay for it, but if it's to just learn how to use it then the less than legal way makes sense if you're doing it out of education (ie, self taught). It may not be right, but it helps Adobe more than it hinders them in the long run as more people can use their software to keep it being a dominant force in the industry, for better or worse!

  • @IceflowStudios Couldn't agree more with you on that ;D PS have gone through a big evolution in the past years ;D CS5 surpass cs2 and other versions in many ways :)

  • Why not use the color range selection tool to remove the blue sky and then feather and press delete?

  • @Rappe95an How would that work? What about the rest of the background?

  • @IceflowStudios Well you can use both quick selection tool and colour range.

  • @Rappe95an That's a destructive process, you'll want to make it as non destructive as possible incase you need to go back and change things. Use a mask instead of deleting things, same end result, but you can put things back later that you didn't realise you needed when you deleted it.

  • @Rappe95an Because of the color contamination on the air from the sky. Color range is a spotty tool compared to this process.

  • thank you

  • WASNT IN MY SUB BOX

  • I wish I was on a beach too :(

  • Epic tut thanks :)

  • Great tutorial, Thanks!

  • Really nice comeback....This is what IceFlow Studios needed: a new concept for a new Youtube Series. I am Lovin gthese Photoshop Mistakes episodes! =D

  • Great tutorial. Thank you.

  • heyyy can you do more digital makeup videos?? thankss! (:

  • Dude. I have NO idea why it had never occurred to me to use the history brush in conjunction with the layer mask created by the Refine Edge function, but that is a really useful tip. Thank you.

  • so funny

  • Hishtory? I'm Sean Connery!

  • lool..hishtory ..

damn man..this new trick with using the history is really awesome ..

thank you for teaching me photoshop :D

  • Not sure where I went wrong. All is good until the final step of using the history brush. All I get is "Could not use the history brush because the history state does not contain a corresponding layer."

Is there a setting that could be on/off by default?

  • @andres4me Did you change the Background layer to a regular layer at some point? If so, select the state after you changed it.

  • @IceflowStudios I did after it didn't work the few times. I've gone back to the original PSD and original background to test and I get the same result. I'll try a different image.

  • @IceflowStudios i dunno y but the same thing is actually happening with me..and yes i changed the background layer to regular ...did what you suggested...no difference ..and then did the thing all over again ..without changing the background layer to regular..and still im not able to use the history brush :/

  • @IceflowStudios I have the same problem. I find it's quite logaical that it doesn't work because the layer I'm trying to edit didn't exist at the point I'm choosing as source for the history brush. How did you do it? Is there some special setting for the history brush or the history?

  • I wish I was on a beach too...

  • Totally awesome :)

  • I already use this tool a lot, but, like you said, no one ever showed the history tool! What a good idea! Now I won't waste 20 minutes playing with the layer mask. YAY!

  • Lol I saw that pic and was like wtf were they thinking? Was the person blind? Haha that's why we have you to show us the right way to do it. THANK YOU!!

  • Amazing tip with the history brush! Never thought of that. Seems to work greatly.
