My Grandma, Louisa Verano, came from Gib. She was evacuated during WW2 whilst it was being used as an army and naval base. @jennyIndianheart - I wonder if you'd be allowed to relocate to Gibraltar if Scotland becomes independent? Gibraltar would remain a UK colony and yet you'd no longer be a citizen of a UK nation. If the EU colapses then freedom of travel in Europe wouldn't cover you either.
I guess there would be a special dispensation for Scots to locate there without need for hassle and to be treated as foriegn nationals to the UK.

@231de300 Northern Ireland has nothing to do with EIRE. Ireland was never a united nation before the British went there, it was a set of different kingdoms. The island of Ireland has never been united while the Irish were in charge, only when the Brits took it over was it united under the umbrella of the UK.
Respect democracy, even if it doesn't give you the result that you wish. Most people in Northern Ireland want to remain in the UK, and most Gibralteans wish to remain under the Brits.
@pazuma lol.Money comes and goes, the cultural wealth of a country is so valuable that lasts forever.Btw the British folk prefer Spain, numbers don´t lie, you can check out the number of millions and millions of British who travel to Spain every year, and all the UK ex-pats who choose to live in Spain ( the 2nd most visited country in the world among other things for its nice and friendly people)
@alexmejia26 Ah Virginia beautiful British place named after the great Virgin Queen Elizabeth by Sir Walter Raleigh. There was also another famous British sailor around that time Sir Francis Drake who inflicted a major defeat on the great Spanish Armada. Oh by the way hill billy, you guys still carrying guns and exectuting people. Oh sorry I forgot you guys have moved on since the colonial era and hold fast to the first amendment. I guess you also still believe in the right to have slaves boy!
Americans have great respect for the British for valid reasons. Your system of laws, governance and order revolutionized Western civilization like no other culture. Compare the manner in which the fanatically Catholic Spanish plundered, murdered and enslaved all of the native peoples of the Western hemisphere to British colonies like America, Bermuda, etc. "Beautiful Spain" is corrupt and bankrupt. No one needs that culture. Keep Gibraltar British, free, and strong.
your wonderfull and overated queen was born in 1533 the first daugther of the second marriage of the fornicator (henry 8)
she star the kingdom in 1558 when mary died
mary, who was the first of the first marriage, and also have a marriage with felipe 2, but iin the contract it said that if marry dies felipe goes the hell out of engld, but theymaried in 1554 so, 4 fresh years of beging da boss of your offsprings
@rev1080 that does not mean felipe rules england,,, he was the husbnd of an english queen, the queen was the head of state not filipe, overated, elizabeth kicked spains ass in the armada....
@alexandertory i know, your ships but more important, your weather in that overrated day xD save your ass.
say "thanks my lord for that ugly day", you could be named alejandro right now
anyway..UK doesnt sucks
gibraltar is an historical thing that must be acctualiced by logical. there is something called international law that i studied so i can talk free about it, and in that law, most of countries included uk accept some right that bassicly say: "gibraltar must blow the hell out"
@rev1080 I dont dispute the fact that luck was on our side that day, but to say elizabth I is overated is a bit low, England enjoyed a golden age of prosperity and peace and from then to the 20th century enjoyed imperial expansion never seen in world history before or since.
@rev1080 fellipe was not king of England, he was prince consort,,, for example.. Queen Elizabth II husband is not king he is a prince consort.. They have no political power even then.
shame on Britain for owning it for 300 years? Longer than the USA has even existed, so what right does a little keybaord warrior scumbag like you have to criticize who or what governs Gibraltar?
@HelmutVillam Correction! England didn't own the Southern tip of Spain for 300 hundred years. As the Pirates that they really are, they occupied it just as they did the Southern part of Ireland for 900 years before they eventually got their butts kicked of out of most of that sovereign Nation.
@frbjoernLA "if you ask the people who live there, I am quite sure that 100% will tell you that it is Spain">>> Sorry to disappoint you, but you're wrong. In any referendum to hand back the Rock to Spain the result is a resounding NO.
Now about stealing it...Read up on the Treaty of Utrecht. I think you'll find it was ceded to Britain :)
@frbjoernLA Do you really think that calling the English pirates is an insult. They fly the skull & cross bones from their subs after a kill...The Belgrano was the last big one.
As for Ireland. I'm of Irish background myself and am sick of some anti British feelings among other Irish, especially in the US. But there are plenty who like England, and the English are an accomodating people.
Perhaps you should think about giving back the lands that previous settlers took away from the Red Indians.
@JollyRodders I was going to send you another emotionally charged reply, but I did say my evening prayers and that reply would have been inconsistent with what I prayed for. I am not English and I am sure I do not share your same political opinions but I respect your loyalty to your country. My comment about the "Scull and Cross Bones" were emotionally charged, I am sorry! Your comment about the Indians is correct! We have treated the Mexicans amongst others very badly also, to our shame!
@JollyRodders Jolly, I just read your profile. And rather than fight with you, If we ever to meet, I'd prefer to buy you a Beer. Before Evening Prayer of course, or should that be after Evening Prayer May there be peace on Earth one Day!
@alexmejia26 Hey idiot, everything you see there was built by the Gilbraltarians and the British. It's a booming place ans Spain is in trouble lol with more than 20% unemployment!! haha!!
@alexmejia26 I think that maybe you should read up a little on your history or alternatively ask those who live there if they'd prefer to be Spanish or British. Let us on the correct side of the Atlantic deal with our own business you on that side can stick to your friendly fire and glory hunting. Gib just like most of us here in Northern Ireland are proud to be British.
@godkingRoss What a stupid comment.Spain is one of the riches countries in the world in terms of cultural wealth, recognized by the UNESCO.But following your logic the Gibraltarians must be very happy being part of the culture of fox hunting with dogs, oh silly me, this wonderful and distinctive part of British culture was banned only a few years ago.And with your high deficit better not to talk about other economies.
@yosyesyo Yeah basically cultural wealth doesn't mean anything, its not a currency its not gold reserves is it?You can't go out and invest in infrastructure with cultural wealth can you. Compare fox hunting to bull fighting. As for high deficit the ftse is back above 6000 and we are cutting our deficit. Nice to see Spain maintaining its role in being the economic powerhouse of Europe giving all and taking nothing... British folk prefer Portugal to Spain same great weather but nicer people!
@justtakeiteasy easy for you to say but you can't just juggle the lives of 30k people gib should have the final say, not some man or woman in London or Madrid. put yourself in their shoes, would you want to become part of a culture who tortures and kills bulls for fun? besides that and many other reasons, Spain's economy aint looking very good, who are we to cast them into such a situation?
Gibraltar isn't a nation and hence has no right to self-determination; should Muslim areas of Bradford be allowed to join Pakistan if they wish? The local population was expelled and the colonists who live there have no right whatsover to 'opt out' of Spanish jurisdiction. The UK's stance is hypocritical when you consider the population of Diego Garcia, who were forcibly deported from the island by the British government. Not much respect for self determination there!

@wordreet not so sure about the Jewish but a proud Gibraltarian with Maltese ancestry certainly. However, equally as proud if there was a Jewish connection.
@SportGibraltar I have no reason to doubt your pride in being a Gibraltarian. :-) My research (via Wiki etc) tells me that the name probably originated from the word 'Shepardic' Jews, which itself seems to have origins back in the 1400s. They were expelled from the Iberian peninsular in the 1500s and eventually settled in Africa, Asia and apparently Malta.
I like a bit of genealogy, not to mention etymology, or even entomology.
Special place, Gib. With my expat parents we used to call in there on our way to & from Tanganyika/Tanzania on bi-annual leave. They also have an incredible history, not least the WW2 bombing by axis forces, the digging of the tunnels, & the evacuation of the people. We still visit, & love the rock & its people dearly. Plus I love the "apes", which are really Barbary Monkeys :-) My love to Tariq's Rock.
@justtakeiteasy Methinks its time for you to stop acting like an arrogant, holier than thou twat. Time to give up the colonial guilt, mate. Here's the thing: colonialism wasnt ALWAYS a bad thing. Gibraltar is a prime example. Its flourished under British control, especially the long-standing Jewish community there, who were persecuted by Spain. But the fact of the matter is, Gibraltarians WANT to remain part of Britain, and it should be up to them, yeah?
Mira quin sea se mete con lo llanito se van a lia con migo GIBRALTAR IS BRITISH AND BRITISH WE STAY NO SPAINSH EVER LLANTIOOOOOOOOO FOREVER AND GIBRLTAR THE BEST Y NADIE NADIE NADIE VA CSAMBIA ESO !!!!!!!
maybe u should study a little bit about spanish and moroccan histories just to know whats happening with Ceuta and Melilla. Maybe u didnt know Morocco was founded WITHOUT its cities, not like Spain. For your info, Gib was founded by spanish, Ceuta by PORTUGAL and finally Melilla by Spain, not Morocco. No need to give back anything founded by spaniards. Better if you study a little bit more. ok?
Ermm for your infortation gibraltar was founded by morocco by a great man named gibraltarik so shut the fuck up YOU MOTHER FUCKING SPAINSH PEICE OF SHIT GO SUCK A COCK ME CAJONE EN TODO TU MUERTO MARICON DE MIERDA CAVRON EJO PUTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! vete chupa culo
@lalinea1985 Morocco was founded without its cities? Is this a joke? Not only Morocco but so many of Spain's cities were founded by Moroccans (los moros). For example: Gibraltar (Jebel Al Tariq), Algeciras (Al Jazira), Granada, Cordoba and all the cities of Andalucia, Murcia and Valencia all the way up to Benicassim for 800 years. In fact you probably are at least 40% moro. So hand yourself back to Morocco and stop talking bullshit:)
Until negotiation talks give ir back to Spain ? LOL ! You can pull up a chair and wait for that to happen. Thanks for making me laugh .....I hadn't laughed like that in ages ...
Gibraltar is part of the United Kingdom and the United Kingdom is a member state of the EU. The only thing is that we chose not to change over our Pounds to the Euro currency, just like Denmark and Sweden ...
Loved the Video, brings back many happy memories of when I lived there in 1975. Worked in the beautiful Casino where I met many lovely people including Victor Azopardi. (poss relative)
yeah blah blah blah, because it's always the same with you Spaniards, you just cannot accept it is ours. Anyway, give your territories back to Morocco before you say anything, hypocritical little cunt.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Gary190tube It is indeed Spanish and trying to bully the Spanish people into not bringing that fact up again is not within the realm of your prerogatives. So get this geographical and historical fact straight., Gibraltar is Spanish and will one day be back under the Spanish government where it belongs. P.S. there is really no such thing as "British" any more than there is a "United" Kingdom since England got booted out of most of the lands she stole. Got that Englander?!!
@rday18 You are correct ! We both had an Empire. And both our countries got booted out of other peoples lands which we stole. In your case, The Middle East, Asia, Africa, America, Ireland etc. etc! One of us still clings to tiny little Islands and Rocks. You make a very good point though. If 99% of the foreign English occupiers vote to retain the stolen property, that means that at least 1% of the English have an honest conscience. Your thieving days are numbered! Remember Hong Kong??
@rday18 Well! I suppose you are right @rday. Will there ever be peace on Earth? I imagine If it is up to our conquering Nations, the answer would be no! There is a hope for peace found in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. I prefer to hope for that peace. Let me try to work toward it by asking you to pardon me for my former impetuous remarks.
@frbjoern "Gibraltar is Spanish and will one day be back under the Spanish government where it belongs">>> Better ask the people that live there what they think about that :)
@JollyRodders Well, if you ask the people who live there, I am quite sure that 100% will tell you that it is Spain. Of course they will have to tell you that in Spanish the ancient national official language, with the exception of the descendants of the foreign English thieving pirates who stole that Southernmost part of Spain as they did in so many other parts of the rest of the World, most of which they got their rear ends kicked out of by the end of the 20th century.
i lived there as a kid in the 90s, and i wish i could go back too. lived on the rock for 4 years, the best 4 years of my childhood. i'm in my 20s now and i'm going back this summer, can't wait! it meant so much to me
@ktblu480 i went about a month ago and it was the funniest thing ever because a friend od mine who was also on the trip got his twix bar stolen by a monkey
having lived there myself i can tell you it's not for everyone - you can't walk down main street without seeing at least 5 people you know, it can be a little claustrophobic. Having said that the people are really lovely, if you can handle the gossip!!

Is it a coincidence that some of the greatest, most prosperous places on earth are former British colonies?
USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, Hong Kong, South Africa, Malaysia Singapore
Gibraltars economy is BOOMing next to poor Spain.
Even the Falkland Islands are now a prosperous & self-sustaining colony, at the bottom of the south Atlantic.
What a shame the Brits didn’t colonize the entire world, what a nicer planet we’d have now.

@SportGibraltar

@rev1080 I dont dispute the fact that luck was on our side that day, but to say elizabth I is overated is a bit low, England enjoyed a golden age of prosperity and peace and from then to the 20th century enjoyed imperial expansion never seen in world history before or since.

shame on Britain for owning it for 300 years? Longer than the USA has even existed, so what right does a little keybaord warrior scumbag like you have to criticize who or what governs Gibraltar?
HelmutVillam 1 year ago 10
@HelmutVillam Correction! England didn't own the Southern tip of Spain for 300 hundred years. As the Pirates that they really are, they occupied it just as they did the Southern part of Ireland for 900 years before they eventually got their butts kicked of out of most of that sovereign Nation.
frbjoernLA 11 months ago
@frbjoernLA "if you ask the people who live there, I am quite sure that 100% will tell you that it is Spain">>> Sorry to disappoint you, but you're wrong. In any referendum to hand back the Rock to Spain the result is a resounding NO.
Now about stealing it...Read up on the Treaty of Utrecht. I think you'll find it was ceded to Britain :)
JollyRodders 11 months ago
@frbjoernLA Do you really think that calling the English pirates is an insult. They fly the skull & cross bones from their subs after a kill...The Belgrano was the last big one.
As for Ireland. I'm of Irish background myself and am sick of some anti British feelings among other Irish, especially in the US. But there are plenty who like England, and the English are an accomodating people.
Perhaps you should think about giving back the lands that previous settlers took away from the Red Indians.
JollyRodders 11 months ago
@JollyRodders I was going to send you another emotionally charged reply, but I did say my evening prayers and that reply would have been inconsistent with what I prayed for. I am not English and I am sure I do not share your same political opinions but I respect your loyalty to your country. My comment about the "Scull and Cross Bones" were emotionally charged, I am sorry! Your comment about the Indians is correct! We have treated the Mexicans amongst others very badly also, to our shame!
frbjoernLA 11 months ago
@JollyRodders Good point, but then the Indians/Meso Americans would have to give their land back to the tribes they took it from and so forth.
In the history of ALL humans, people are driven out and others take over and the cycle repeats itself.

@godkingRoss What a stupid comment.Spain is one of the riches countries in the world in terms of cultural wealth, recognized by the UNESCO.But following your logic the Gibraltarians must be very happy being part of the culture of fox hunting with dogs, oh silly me, this wonderful and distinctive part of British culture was banned only a few years ago.And with your high deficit better not to talk about other economies.
yosyesyo 1 year ago 3
@yosyesyo Yeah basically cultural wealth doesn't mean anything, its not a currency its not gold reserves is it?You can't go out and invest in infrastructure with cultural wealth can you. Compare fox hunting to bull fighting. As for high deficit the ftse is back above 6000 and we are cutting our deficit. Nice to see Spain maintaining its role in being the economic powerhouse of Europe giving all and taking nothing... British folk prefer Portugal to Spain same great weather but nicer people!

SportGibraltar 1 year ago
@SportGibraltar I have no reason to doubt your pride in being a Gibraltarian. :-) My research (via Wiki etc) tells me that the name probably originated from the word 'Shepardic' Jews, which itself seems to have origins back in the 1400s. They were expelled from the Iberian peninsular in the 1500s and eventually settled in Africa, Asia and apparently Malta.
I like a bit of genealogy, not to mention etymology, or even entomology.

Gibraltar is a prime example. Its flourished under British control, especially the long-standing Jewish community there, who were persecuted by Spain. But the fact of the matter is, Gibraltarians WANT to remain part of Britain, and it should be up to them, yeah?

@lalinea1985 Morocco was founded without its cities? Is this a joke? Not only Morocco but so many of Spain's cities were founded by Moroccans (los moros). For example: Gibraltar (Jebel Al Tariq), Algeciras (Al Jazira), Granada, Cordoba and all the cities of Andalucia, Murcia and Valencia all the way up to Benicassim for 800 years. In fact you probably are at least 40% moro. So hand yourself back to Morocco and stop talking bullshit:)
