Sounds like the mother is living with her son and not the other way around. In Japan it is expected for children to take care of their parents in old age. It doesn't have the stigma that our culture has. Actually this is the way it is in most of the world. They can't imagine having old people die alone or in a nursing home. It's just not done. So, go figure... haha. I would love to live there and what's even more amazing is they manage to have one of the highest standards of living in the world despite their huge population and high congestion.

@dorinday - I'd be willing to bet that at least half to 2/3rds of the total cost were just for the land to build on. Look up houses and apartments in downtown NYC or San Francisco. They're about as ridiculously expensive.
