while i watched the movie i was rwally hoping the end won't be completely bad for anna. but after watching it i realise the movie is better and stronger the way it is. the american remake will probably have a more optimistic ending but that will ruin some of the strongest points of the movie

my guess is that at the end of the movie the police will come and tell Anna they can give her a new skin or some bullshit

@Johnlindsey289 No. "Fight Club" apparently has some merit, but if any of the other films you mention are similar to "Martyrs", forget it. There is enough real life torture and horror in the world that this sensationalized load of refuse is not just shameful, but redundant.

@Johnlindsey289 You're probably one of the few people who's made some measure of sense in defense of this film. My issue with it is that if it's meant to mirror real life events, like the senseless torture at Guantanamo Bay, the story "Martyrs" attempts to tell is that this severe level of torture leads to a revelation of God/the afterlife. The whole scene at the end with the Martyr Society and Madameoiselle shooting herself is so hollow and dissatisfying a reveal.

What do you expect? the Europeans and the Japanese do make horrifying stuff to all the way to the famous 1975 Salo: 120 Days in Sodom and Guiena Pig which both made me sick. I hear a Serbian Film is worse than this but i refuse to see that trash after all the vile and disgusting things i've heard including the infamous much talked about scnene, i am a horror fan afterall but Serbian film i'm not touching. Martyrs i thought was powerful and artsy.

@Johnlindsey289 That's just my point. The only thing "Martyrs" seems to have going for it is that it's allegedly "artsy". Its power is in its unrelenting violence. But it attempts to explain itself at the end, and falls so far short of the mark.

I enjoy horror films, but even your trademark classic slasher flicks attempt some semblance of a story. "Martyrs" tries to be more than it is.

I still refuse to see Serbian Film after what i heard especially when a newborn baby gets raped to death, a 6 year old boy getting sexually molested by his dad, skullfucking, necrophilia etc. the filmmakers must be fucked up in the head to make a movie like that

@MrDutchbasterd1 I agree, MrDutch. A Serbian film is twisted but it's a satire with a lot of pitch black humour. A lot of people who watch it are so disturbed by the acts onscreen, they don't notice the delivery of them. The film is sick but Martyrs is a much more serious and bleak film. It features no slapstick off the wall violence or tongue in cheek line deliveries like A Serbian Film does. A Serbian Film is good but it's a very different films from Martyrs (which I think is a masterpiece),

Seen Men Behind The Sun? a really horrifying film that is the most shocking film i've ever seen as it's based on an actual case near the end of WWII where the Japanese torture Chinese and Russians to make biological experiments on them. It has really horrifying scenes of torture, a real cat being thrown into a pit of flesh-eating rats to all the way to a real morgue filmed scene where an actual dead body is having an autopsy, what trash that was.
