I am American. My family immigrated from Quebec around 140 yrs ago. But, we still have relatives there and they want a separate nation. I don't have a dog in the fight, but I've been told by my nephews about instances where they have been verbally abused, even spat upon, in other areas of Canada. This is sad, if true. Basically, what I get from my family is that they don't "feel" Canadian, rather Quebecois. For this reason they want a separate nation.
They always talk about french culture. Can someone please explain to me what else there is to the french culture besides the french language. I am not insulting just someone please explain!
I am very confused now. So bloc Quebecois wants to run as the canadian leader but at the same time they want to seperate quebec from canada to become 2 different countries? Can someone explain to me how that works? And if you are going to say something stupid then don't reply!
@zerounite The point of the Bloc Quebecois was not (And I say was because they've been driven to the fringes of extinction now) to become the Government, they wanted to represent Quebec in the House of Commons. Quebec doesn't have enough seats to make a Government on its own (At least I don't think so). But representatives from other parties tend to have a party agenda. The Bloc's agenda was only to benefit Quebec. So with the Bloc in the house, Quebec was over represented basically.
@zerounite They do not run for Prime minister. Party are not all seeking power in the parliament political system. Their are 3 type of parties, those who can be elected, those who are in opposition and the third would be what I could call 'one goal party' e.g: the Bloc pot. The only purpose of this party is to legalize marijuana, they won't be elected, they put pressure on the government to achieve their goal. The bloc is an opposition party they can't do anything to make Quebec a country.
@knightinboot I don't know if you have certain notion of politic, you might have heard of Montesqieu which explain that power should fight power (separation of power) well even thought the parliament system separate the power in different branches, it is collaborating more than anything else. So even if your party doesn't seek the head of the government you can still have an impact (as long as the government as a minority of the seats )
@zerounite no , gilles duceppe does not want to become prime minister , he just want quebec to have a chance of saying what they want to the house of commons ... it's nothing more , they want quebec sovereignty , as he say he don't hate canada , but i think that each province should have a party like this . now they don't really exist but it's because , again , quebec has choose an other party than the majority , the NPD , and they do regret now cause they realized that they vote for jack :/
everyone we can change all of this. WE and you are all so beautiful and strong, and kind, loving, intelligent beings. Thier lying to you all, and THEY are a small few. There is enough food, water, shelter, and healthcare to share around the globe, tens of thousands of times over. You all need to wake up now and return to eachother and your earth. You are not separtes, you are the same, and your manifesting this reality . They are a small few, ( our global leaders), and do not want you to know.
How long would it take for Quebec to get sovereignty? Is it just a referendum? Or, does it take approval from Parliament and the Prime Minister as well?
@whereismybailouttv Most of the new country created during the 20th century didn't even go through a referendum (a separatist party took the power and that was it) and were quickly recognised by the UN. Therefore, any Prime Minister opposition would be futile.
Thank you Guyz for the love , im a french canadien from montreal and im glad to be a Quebecois, the point is whe need to work together to be a strong country but whe do not like the way your politicien Stephen Harper deal with the power you provide im.
@DrH5N1, im a french canadian either, and a proud souverainist, and i love the work that Harper did untill now, do you think a Liberalist or even worst a NDP will cut the federals taxes. The best compromise of a souverainist is the provincial autonomy, the decentralization of the power, less federal power more provincial power, if my vote wasn't for Gilles Duceppe it would have been for Harper. Idon't want to see a russian bourgeois in power or even worst (orange Lenin) clouds digger.
Oh please as an American it will be a pain in the ass to memorize another country in North America and I don't want some fag hind tit Frenchies trying to run my part of the world.
@BonneNuitLoki no I just hate people who cry and bitch all day saying they wan't to seperate but they still wan't alberta British columbia and everyone in the west to keep paying them transfer funds. If you wan't to seperate make it on your own.
@viper10011 1) The West has money because they polute the whole Canada. If Alberta and Saskatchewan responsible provinces, they would be a lot poorer. 2) Quebec receives less money (500$/inhabitant) than Atlantic provinces (1147-1398 / inhabitant) and Manitoba (1147/inhabitant). It is very similar to Sastkatchewan (476$/inhabitant). 3) Sovereignty has nothing to do with money transfer. 4) If we become a country we won't take Alberta's money; therefore, you should LOVE separatists.
@BonneNuitLoki I just wanted to say that the wealth in the prairie provinces benefits the rest of the Canadian economy. None of us are isolated. And thanks to the economy in Calgary, (my home,) I've been able to save for university. I know it's easy to hate the oil barons, but there are thousands of ordinary people, like me, who rely on the economy that those oil barons keep afloat. Think about us too, and how disastrous it would be if the prairies suddenly stopped producing oil.
@canadarox14 I understand your point of view, but still I disagree. 1) I don't think that we need to rely on fossile products. Hydroelectricity gives Quebec a lot of money and that could be the case with windpower in the Prairies. 2) If our government taxes the industries and the rich people, if it doesn't buy military planes (the last time we used ours was in 1990) and doesn't pay invest A LOT of money in prisons (while it doesn't decrease crime)... will be able to invest in education.
@canadarox14 By the way, I really don't think it would be DISASTROUS since Alberta has super low taxes (if none?). Do you really think that ontarian or quebecors would be happy to stop paying 7-9,5% taxes in order to participate into destroying our ecosystems? :( ... I'm not THAT pessimistic lol.
@BonneNuitLoki Well, my bank account doesn't agree with the "if none" statement, and as for the disastrous bit, it would certainly be disastrous to my community, and eventually the rest of Canada. As I said before, profits in the prairies benefit all of us. I agree with you, and I don't like the pollution either, but this industry does provide jobs to thousands of people. It'd be nice to replace it with wind power, but until then, we need to respect people who rely on fossil fuels.
@canadarox14 :/ I think Harper's administration performs a brainwhashing action by making it so obvious for some people that oil industry HAS to be kept alive. As for your taxes, how dare you call this something disastrous? Paying taxes = giving money so that it could be invested for the benefit of the collectivity. It also means that you realise that some are poorer than you and that they deserve more goods. Now, I've been extremely lucky myself and I want to share this luck.
@BonneNuitLoki Whoa, I'm sorry you were so offended by the taxes comment. I meant that abruptly stopping the use of fossil fuels would be disastrous, not that my taxes are. I understand the purpose of taxes, and I wasn't complaining about them. As for being brainwashed, I think living in a neighbourhood where families are dependant on the oil industry for their livelihood gives me a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about. I'm simply arguing that both sides of the debate have valid opinions.
@canadarox14 Alright then :) ! I really thought you meant taxes where disastrous!
I don't believe fossil fuels industries should be stopped abruptly either... except if we had an incredible solution (like very specific places to hire the workers who'd lose their jobs).
I think NDP would do a great job being at the same time concerned with jobs and environment.
@BonneNuitLoki Yeah, I think that miracle solution is what we're all waiting for. Hopefully we'll have one someday. (Sorry for confusing you with the taxes/fossil fuels thing. Sometimes I forget that what makes sense in my head doesn't always make sense in writing.)
Isn't is interesting how Mr. Duceppe constantly talks about making Quebec a separate nation and yet he has expressed practically no opposition about a North American Union.
Surely if he wanted to help Quebec maintain it's language and culture he would be adamantly against such a proposition.
@Bojaxs Wanting to protect French doesn't mean be schizophrenic about international community. Having your own country doesn't mean rejecting the RoC.
I'm Canadian, and I have absolutely nothing against Quebec and personally enjoy having them in Canada. What I don't understand is why people are always saying that the rest of Canada is rude about Quebec, when if fact Quebec is the province thats trying to seperate from Canada. Will leaving the country really make that much of a difference in terms of language? There would still be english people living there.
@loveuJhonny You're right. There are a lot english people living in Quebec and that's alright. But, I still believe self-determination is essential for a culture and the very fact that other provinces don't want to recognize Quebec as a distinct nation is a restriction to our self-determination. We'd like to have our own athletes, our embassys; we'd want to decide whether we want to spend tones of money to buy useless military planes.
@loveuJhonny As for language, we have a strong institution to protect it but still... is it normal that tones of immigrants don't learn french because they consider themselves in Canada? I live in an english part of Montreal and it's hard just to go a shop and being served in french. I really think that being a country would give us enough self-respect to respect better the differences (R. Lévesques did speaches about this). It's kind of sad that I feel more at home in Paris than in Toronto :/
Wow, it's nice to see the comments showing again how much Canada loves us.
it's certainly not the kind of reactions that will help to convince us to stay in Canada.
Why so much hate for duceppe, he's just saying that we don't want to separate because we hate Canada, as many Canadians think, it's simply to have our own country and take our own decisions... Not that hard to understand.
@squash900 Yeah, there are some people going off about Quebec here, but that is in no way a reflection of all Canadians and our opinion of Quebec. It's possible people get a bit defensive when confronted with a party whose sole aim is seperating itself from the rest of our country. Personally I like having Quebec as a part of Canada, but if the vast majority were totally intent on seperating I wouldn't fight about it.
Independance is not a matter of religion. Quebec's population is highly atheist compared to you guys living in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. At least, Quebec is not a nomansland like Canada, we are a nation. We are highly billingual compared to you English xenophobic faggots. You Canadians claim everywhere Quebec need money from Ottawa. Then why do you want us so bad into Canada at the same time ! If Quebec ever did separate, I hope Quebec would place an embargo on Canada and deal with US
Listen to this clown talk as if he is alrerady a seperate country !!! Hey Duceppe, give up your pension and your job as a Canadian government employee and then bitch about it....you will not be heard because you are part of the Canadian Government you French turd!!!! This guy should be Shot for treason to the country that he does not belong in!! You would not see this type of behavior in the US.They would hunt him down and shot him for the Dog he is.
Quebec's biggest worry shouldn't be marginalization from Canada. There biggest worry should be being lost to Globalization. Quebecs BEST hope to maintain what they have left. Is Canada. PERIOD. My friends and Quebec need to wake up.
I don't hate Quebec or anything, I just think it should be treated just like the rest of the provinces. It's just as special as Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia. If they separate, it will do absolutely no good for them whatsoever.
@GrilledAngus You should read Will Kimlycka (Ontario philosopher) who defends rights for minority as a liberal value. Quebec claims are legitimate because their culture has to be specially protected, which is not the case with Ontario (there are 7 000 000 francophones while more than 300 000 000 anglophones in North America). The bare fact that 40% of Quebec population is separatist and simply don't feel Canadian at all is a strong clue of their cultural difference.
@Gnickk well I definately don't want that! I want Gilles Duceppe to get out of the house of Commons and go eat some more poutine and wear the fleur de lis to bed more. I just think it's stupid that one province has to have THIS much representation just because they're french. They're not a nation, they're never going to be a nation, and they never were.
@GrilledAngus, your behaviors is the kind of reason why we started the PQ 40 years ago. As long as the federalist want the centralization of the power and the gradual destruction of the provincial autonomy we will fight. btw i prefer Harper at this arrogant opportunist pseudo intellectual who did not even pass half of his life in canada, and the other even more centralizator this orange Lenin, a clouds digger. I just don't understand his popularity in quebec, a confidence based on sympathy.
@Gnickk Ya i do. a country is a state that has sovereignty, and a province (Quebec) is a part of a country, not an actual separate area. and a state is the same thing as a province.
@GrilledAngus Well thats the thing. There is no fight between quebec and the rest ofthe provinces. Most Quebecers have no problem with the rest of canada and the rest of canada has no problem with quebecers. I dont see how a Sovereign Quebec will make the lives better for its citicens. Sovereign quebec will never happen simply because the majority do not want it LOL
Man i don't know whether or not seperatists consider what the natives had do endure. We let the french keep their language, culture and religion. They still say they were assimilated and still are. The natives, however, were forced into schools that restricted them from dressing and speaking how they would normally and would learn the ways of the proper "english-canadian". That is assimilation. So quebecois, don't you forget that you guys aren't that bad off.
I am from Quebec. I am a federalist and have pride in being a Canadian. However if Quebec's citizen ever vote a majority for separation I will accept the decision. Canadians should keep in my mind that even though it has been 15 years since the 95 referendum, there will always be a group of people here that feel different in Canada. That feel their ancestors and culture have been marginalized by the english world. There will always be a chance that another referendum like 95 happens again
@Prout1418 ure a reatrd and nobody wants ure french language
go split everybody will just be happy cous we dont have to learn the fench language at school. plus all of our commercial industires are in qubec so without us ure nothing. a third wold nation. do u realize that u reatard ure just like Ukrain wanting to separate from russia. now look at em.
@Prout1418 you said "there will always be a group of people here that feel different in Canada. That feel their ancestors and culture have been marginalized by the english world" you could be talking about the First Nations people of Canada (and the French were just as bad to them as the English). However, you dont see the First Nations people trying to separate and they have an actual right to do it!
@securepasskjs500 Agreed, however if you get into the matter politically instead of personally(or whatever) you'll realize that Quebec adds to Canada's economy, which we need right now.
But we do need to change the system of elections. Premiers abuse their power beyond belief. Gordon Campbell is a liberal nutjob who is far too greedy to be in any position of power.
Why separate? when you can maintain the unfair positional power in the house of commons where every federal party has to strike a deal with the bloc in order to pass legislation...
I find that politically unfair for those of us outside of quebec. :(
@akcasama I can guarantee you that any citizen in Quebec with even half a brain doesn't want to separate...they have a great thing going with this "Bloc" party...might as well keep soaking the rest of us...that is until we wise up, and kick the free-loaders out of the confederation.
@hootchee22 sorry, there will be no separate quebec country but all separatists can get on a plane, a train, a bus or a boat and leave CANADIAN soil if they dislike it so much
@AbdultheImpailler he doesn't need to go nowhere. It's as stupid as I told to get out of my Canada becose the french settlers were there before you loyalists, and that you are not a true "Canadien"
I am American. My family immigrated from Quebec around 140 yrs ago. But, we still have relatives there and they want a separate nation.

GrilledAngus 1 year ago 10
@GrilledAngus You should read Will Kimlycka (Ontario philosopher) who defends rights for minority as a liberal value. Quebec claims are legitimate because their culture has to be specially protected, which is not the case with Ontario (there are 7 000 000 francophones while more than 300 000 000 anglophones in North America). The bare fact that 40% of Quebec population is separatist and simply don't feel Canadian at all is a strong clue of their cultural difference.
BonneNuitLoki 11 months ago
@GrilledAngus If you want a decentralised Canada made of autonomous provinces, you agree with Gilles Duceppe.
Gnickk 10 months ago
@Gnickk well I definately don't want that! I want Gilles Duceppe to get out of the house of Commons and go eat some more poutine and wear the fleur de lis to bed more. I just think it's stupid that one province has to have THIS much representation just because they're french. They're not a nation, they're never going to be a nation, and they never were.
GrilledAngus 10 months ago
@GrilledAngus, your behaviors is the kind of reason why we started the PQ 40 years ago. As long as the federalist want the centralization of the power and the gradual destruction of the provincial autonomy we will fight. btw i prefer Harper at this arrogant opportunist pseudo intellectual who did not even pass half of his life in canada, and the other even more centralizator this orange Lenin, a clouds digger. I just don't understand his popularity in quebec, a confidence based on sympathy.
GJGJ654 10 months ago
@GrilledAngus Someone doesn't know the difference between a state, a country and a nation.
Gnickk 10 months ago
@Gnickk Ya i do. a country is a state that has sovereignty, and a province (Quebec) is a part of a country, not an actual separate area. and a state is the same thing as a province.
GrilledAngus 10 months ago
@GrilledAngus What about the third term on my list?
Gnickk 10 months ago

95LebronJames 1 year ago
@Prout1418 you said "there will always be a group of people here that feel different in Canada. That feel their ancestors and culture have been marginalized by the english world" you could be talking about the First Nations people of Canada (and the French were just as bad to them as the English). However, you dont see the First Nations people trying to separate and they have an actual right to do it!
sk8drew 3 months ago
If we let Quebec split then Alberta will want to split too and we'll lose the revenue from the oil.
TwoNNsB 1 year ago 6
Guess what, it's mostly other quebecers and Ontario that want Quebec to stay.
The rest of Canada would be more then happy to see Duceppe and freeloading ingrates like him go.
securepasskjs500 1 year ago
@securepasskjs500 Agreed, however if you get into the matter politically instead of personally(or whatever) you'll realize that Quebec adds to Canada's economy, which we need right now.
But we do need to change the system of elections. Premiers abuse their power beyond belief. Gordon Campbell is a liberal nutjob who is far too greedy to be in any position of power.
Shadowsonggg 1 year ago
@godfall, harper hasn't changed anything extreme, hes tried but remember he only has a minority governement, hes on a short leash.
CadetBrandon 1 year ago
after what harper has done to this country, quebec might as well separate.
gODfall 1 year ago
Why separate? when you can maintain the unfair positional power in the house of commons where every federal party has to strike a deal with the bloc in order to pass legislation...
I find that politically unfair for those of us outside of quebec. :(
akcasama 1 year ago
@akcasama I can guarantee you that any citizen in Quebec with even half a brain doesn't want to separate...they have a great thing going with this "Bloc" party...might as well keep soaking the rest of us...that is until we wise up, and kick the free-loaders out of the confederation.

@hootchee22 sorry, there will be no separate quebec country but all separatists can get on a plane, a train, a bus or a boat and leave CANADIAN soil if they dislike it so much

@AbdultheImpailler he doesn't need to go nowhere. It's as stupid as I told to get out of my Canada becose the french settlers were there before you loyalists, and that you are not a true "Canadien"
brazeau2009 1 year ago
@brazeau2009 I am a true Canadian, I'm part native.
his home may be in the PROVINCE of quebec but he still lives and was born in the COUNTRY of Canada.
Give up your dream of a separate quebec, it will never happen, if you want to live in a french speaking country move to France or Haiti
