  • Louie, top 5 dead or alive......... THE OTHER FOUR ARE BUDDY,ART,MAX AND GENE KRUPA. If you don't agree then you no nothing of REAL DRUMMING!

  • Perfection

  • Buddy Rich called Bellson one of his favorite drummers. Buddy didn't throw compliments around. I thought Keith Moon was perfect for the WHO. He was indeed fun to watch etc. But he would have looked out of place at this particular tribute. To compare him to any good jazz drummer is off the mark.

  • He's a old man here...He always was great ! The comment on Keith Moon Vs. Bellson...well you can't go there. A drummer vs a artist drummer, what you smoking. This is jazz, not rock that everybody plays. Loved it thanks !!!

  • Fuckkkkkkkkkk me ! he is amazing !! he is the only modern era driummer than can play lie Buddy , u see all the other contemporary players struggle playing Buddy except maybe Dave Weckl ..Fuck Louie Bellson is a freak ! LEGEND!

  • Anyone comparing people like Keith Moon to Louie Bellson.I dare you to find the 1st beat of Louie´s soloing and go with it,see what you find.Do the same with Moon and tell me which has more ideas, feel and MUSIC.

    I dare you.

  • The creator of double bass! I love how he fits everything in with jazz! :)

  • Louis once did a 3 bass drum solo. Laid the way for all us soloing drummers with Skin Deep. Also a perfect gentleman and a master of the Moeller technique. Keith Moon was a total nutter- great open rock drummer but wouldn't have known a paradiddlediddle if it bit him on the ass , but he wouldn't have cared less anyway.RIP Keith and Louis and thanks to both of them for enriching the drummer's world.

  • amazing...rest in peace mr bellson.....and thank you.

  • Although Louis was the pioneer of double bass drums and large extended drum kits... many drummers have caught up with this now, it doesn't seem so special. The thing that really stands out for me about Louis is his fantastic snare drum technique. Fast, crisp and clean - gorgeous!

  • YEEEEAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!! Respect to the Master Bellson !!! :)

  • saying that Moon is just a showman really shows the lack of musical knowledge and sensibility in some of these commentators...its a shame. Yes he was out of his mind, but Keith Moon was a brilliant drummer. He knew exactly what he was doing. OBVIOUSLY Bellson was much more experienced and shouldn't be compared with Moon. But i'm sorry to knock you jazz know-it-alls off the pedestal, Keith Moon was a much more INFLUENTIAL drummer than Bellson.

  • @ztmdrums More influential in what sense? Moon was certainly more popular than Bellson, but rock drummers are going to be more popular than jazz drummers because rock is a much more popular genre of music. However, popularity and influence are not the same thing. Keep in mind that that double bass setup that damn near every metal drummer out there uses was started by Louie Bellson.

  • @ChiTown7721 I didn't say that Louie never had an influence. and of course he started the double bass trend. But being influential certainly has something to do with how popular you are. Moon was more popular, sold more records, drummers reacted to his playing and started shedding his stuff out. Louie wasn't as popular, hence drummers didn't really play more of his stuff. I think Louie had so much more to offer though.

  • Nice! The rug really bad though.

  • Moon was a pure Rock drummer with a limited musical and percussive vocabulary.

Plenty of showmanship, while painfully short on technique and artistry.

Comparing Moon with Bellson is tantamount to stating that Harry Potter as literature is superior to Joyce's Ulysses.

  • wooo.........hold on. are you telling me that this steamroller. was 81 years old here.

  • @gethsenamane This concert was in '89, so he was 64 here.

  • Moby Dick lol

  • This man guy is the embodiment of drumming period. Always had more of an appreciation for Belson because he had a style off his own and wasn't trying to dupe B. Rich like everyone else.

  • I'm sure that Louie Bellson was much easier to work under than it was to work under Buddy Rich. I wish I had gotten the chance to meet Bellson. I got to see BR in concert but never got to see LB. Louie acknowledged the other musicians and applauded them and was gracious. Buddy was---to put it politely, not.

  • @drummerlead

I met Louie in 1977. The experience was great ! What struck me the most was his open, relaxed demeanor. Although we'd never met he talked to me as if we'd known each other for forty years!

  • ok guys dont hate me for this. i saw louie, dennis and gregg's trio before i saw this and i thought louie had lost his touch....i saw this and oh how wrong i was. but remember louie is an old man here so i guess he was tired lol...but louie's and buddys memory will live on as long as there are drums :)

  • Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • vieu routard mé tjr la attache ceintir

  • 4 sticks....what more can be said ? 4 sticks....

  • keith played on the edge of disaster.

louie tapped danced on his drums.

  • Well, now Buddy, Gene and Louie are all playing in heaven's band, damn what a show that must be!!

  • the man who pioneered the double bass drum setup in action.

  • Can´t agree more with you, guys!! Keith was a good rock drummer...no more than that ( anyway, I think it's not necessary to talk about his private life...). Instead, Louie was one of the all-time jazz giants, and that's enough to say...Heaven must be shocked with the music of your drums, Louie!!!

  • proof that age aint nothing but a number!!

  • Keith Moon?! Give me a break! How dare you compare Louie Bellson to Keith Moon! You're damn right he's no Keith Moon, and thank God. Keith Moon was a drugged-out alcoholic who just beat the shit out of his drums for show and died at the age of 32 back in 1978. Louie, on the other hand, was a phenomenal drummer and composer, lived a good productive life, and died at the ripe old age of 84 in February 2009. Keith Moon my ass!!!

  • Bravo. Well said.

Keith Moon? Wasted, drugged out, drunken hack, like many of his ilk.

Their names have no business being mentioned with the Jazz Masters.

Buddy, Louie, Mel Lewis, Joe Morello, Shelly Manne - THESE are the Masters young people should look up to and remember, not some wasted, alcoholic, no talent, deadbeat bum sonsabitches ~

  • i think he was joking (by the ha ha ha in brackets its pretty obvious?)

its pretty obvious keith couldnt do anyhting like this

  • @zildj1an calm down. Keith Moon was a great rock drummer. No, he shouldn't be compared to Bellson but Moon made his own legacy. Yes, he had drug/booze issues but so didn't Dave Tough. Bellson, Tough, Moon, etc. all share the same legacy and that is being important drummers for their chosen field of music. End of story.

  • @zildj1an I agree with you on one thing: there is no comparison between Moon and Bellson, that's for sure...

On the other hand, have some respect. If there's one thing that I know for certain, it's that there will NEVER be another drummer like Keith Moon. I don't mean in terms of better or worse, I mean in terms of particular style.

Most rock drummers nowadays probably have some influence by Moon. So by insulting him and his style, you're also insulting MANY great drummers...

  • @gimli1980 Good post. Comparing Keith Moon to Louis Bellson is ridiculous. Totally different styles (and life styles). I'm afraid my original post was a bit too acerbic. I'm more of a jazz guy, but I must admit that Keith Moon was one of my favorite rock drummers back in the day. I guess I'm just pissed off more about his life style; he should have been playing for much longer. I feel the same way about the great jazz alto player, Charlie Parker, who died at age 34 due to his addictions.

  • @zildj1an I should have also mentioned that I feel the same way about John Bonham. Another great rock drummer who died at age 32 due to his alcohol addiction.

  • IMPRESIONANTE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • they are battleing in drummers eternity by now.....

  • Era un animal el flaco. Que descanse en paz.

  • genio y figura
