Akbash is a great herding breed. They look similar to GP and kuvasz but at the end regardless of the dog's breed, this dog needs a good brushing and loose that fluffy bum. ASAP . Life, down on the farm is great especially when you're not dragging 20 pounds of matted hair on your bum.
@mujiijum A san owner of working Maremmas, I can confidently say that those people are never getting a brush near that dog without losing an arm. They shed in huge clumps, that fur will all fall off ina week or so.
You NEED to take care of that dog's matted fur. It can cause SERIOUS and even DEADLY health problems, and I'm not joking. Probably all that is matted that bad needs to be shaved off, and the rest needs to be groomed. I do NOT care if it is hard to get it done, you NEED to for the health of the dog. Get 1-2 people to restrain the dog, and 1 groom. I'm sorry, but that's not excusable. It's abuse to have an animal that you don't take care of.
@MsEmberScorpio Beleve me, he's had a bath, they get worse than that if you don't bathe them. I've had 3 of them . They require constant grooming to keep them looking decent. Problem is, they just don't care and don't really like a bath. And you need a 100 gallon bath tub and 3 people to do it. By the time it's over, everybodys wet. We give ours a bath about every 6 months and brush them when they will let us. They are wonderful pets. No one will hurt you with one of these at your side.
Look at video at 1:24-1:34. Definitely a Pyr. I have a Pyr/ Kangal Dog now & have had Pyr's, Akbash, Kangal, & Caucasian Ovcharka's. This is a Pyrenean Mountain Dog. The head and hind quarters give it away immediately. There really is no cream coloring in this dog just a dirty hind are due to most likely laying in dirt and mud. Also the feathering of the rear quarters give it away. Akbash will not have this much. Also the eyes are a give away.
Maybe these breeds (other than the Great Pyrenees) are common in your country but this video was made in America where the Pyr are very common for livestock guarding...not these other breeds you keep saying they are. Google the Great Pyrenees and then tell me if you still think it is something else. Akbash are in America but are not that commen AND like they are skinnier etc.
That fact has well been established. I'm not an expert on these breeds Just guessing at the time I put this together. Now that the differences have been pointed out, it's quite easy to see, this is a GP.
Sorry Missbonina, you're mistaken. That is an Akbash. Yes, very similar to the pyrenees, but different in several key respects. The pyrenees typically have a straight tail, prominent brow ridge & never that much cream colouring. The Akbash have 2 distinct lines. One line descended from sighthounds and is slighter (I have one) the second line is descended from mastiffs and have the much thicker features of the dog you see in this video. It's an Akbash, possibly a mix, but mostly Akbash.
It's not a great pyrenees 'cause the tail is like upwards curling up its back: Great pyrenees have their tail hanging low, like a labrador for example. These breeds look so alike that is really hard to recognize them...
I have a Pyr and yes, their tail does hang low when they are relaxed but when they are barking or sense danger the tail curls and raises up...just like German Shepherds do. It is not naturally in that position at all times...only when they are barking at something etc. I have a Pyr, Anatolian, and a German Shepher. My sister has a Pyr too and her male does the same thing when he is barking at a "threat."
seriously? I didn't know that! I had 2 german sheperds and the tail went really pointy but it never curled upwards...oh well! As they say: you never go to bed without learning something new....thx for the info!
No...I worded that wrong..my shepherds (I have owned 5) would raise up but never curl...that part i was meaning for the Pyr and Anatolians. Sorry...I should have corrected myself. You get what I am saying though. :)
Oh yeah. These dogs are there for a reason, to protect the flock. And they will chase and attack anything they see as a threat. We were in the car and he chased us all the way down the road.lol
This is really so good farm and realy good akbash too.Can you tell me where did you buy from this long haired akbash.Because I am turkish an I want to buy 1 couple akbash dogs whixh looks like this akbash dog.İf you can help me ı would be really pleased. Thanks for this video.
Hi, thanks for watching and the nice comment. Well these are not my animals. It's a farm in the area, don't know owner. The dog may be a Great Pyrenees. I don't know the breeds well enough to make a positive ID but does resembles an Akbash dog. I'm sure you can do an internet search and find a good breeder.
I'm not sure if the dog's purebred or not, looks like he could be a GP too. Or a mix of the two. He's still a huge dog and I wouldn't want to get on his bad side.. no matter what breed he is.lol
lol, No they live on a large farm in the area, I wish they were mine! I don't know their owner/s. We just like to ride by and visit through the window.:)
Nice video! That's the first I'd heard of those dogs. Now I just learned something new- again:) Nice to see the animals are so free there:) I always feel so bad for the horses and cows because they have to deal w/ those stupid flies.

poor dog probably never had a bath in its entire life. Just look at how matted his fur is at the back - its all clumped together.

I agree. The treatment of that dog is poor at best. Just because they guard farm animals doesn't mean they are meant to be ignored.

I agree. I have a purebred Pyr and an Anatolian Shepherd. This is def. a Pyr! (One that is needing a good grooming too!) :)

that dog looks more like an Akbash..
I've been around enough Kangal, Akbash and Pyrenees dogs to know...
the prominent think is the curled up tail, especially when the dog is alert from some potential danger
and Akbash are actually as big as, if not bigger than, the Great Pyrenees.. they are also bigger than their more famed cousins the Kangal.
They also have hound genes,.. and their hind legs will stand taller than Pyrenees
akinerian 2 years ago
akbash are not taller than kangals i have both. akbash are big but not as tall as the kangals. but their great dogs though.

Akbash dogs are amazing! The only breed in the world with the appearance & power of a mastiff and the speed of a hound.
Serious guard dogs! Originally from Turkey. Just like Kangal, Malakli and Kars dogs.
Turkey has the best flock guardian dogs in the world and Akbash is my favorite... Good video thank you for sharing...
