  • this particular version, reminds me of two episodes from the mario bros cartoon series, where mario and luigi were in a western themed or desert, and another where they were down south for a river boat race

  • Needs to be faster!

  • @chemmerling That's my fault. As I'm also not familiar with the tunes -- just made the scores -- my assumption was that it should be played slowly, so I told him to take it at a leisurely tempo. Frankly I still think it sounds better like this than at a fast tempo.

  • that man, is a legend

  • do you still record his videos?

  • @calebthellama Yes. Myself and "verybigrifle" in particular record a lot of Tom's performances. "sutterchip" does from time to time too.

  • i love people who can sight read like that, i'm sure it is amazing seeing them play in person

  • 4 people lost a fist fight at the saloon..

  • That's really Chuck Norris in disguise

  • I could just imagine Mario and Luigi dancing to this in tuxedos and top hats

  • @crabalockerfishwife6 Not just dancing, but tap-dancing!

  • @Keeper1st Once I read that, (about the tap-dancing), I started imagining that I heard tapdancing in the background for the rest of the song... That would be cool! lol

  • "Something Like That"......EXACTLY LIKE THAT!!!!

  • my lord how amazing/

  • Favorite!

  • That brings the tears to my eyes.

  • came for the piano, stayed for the beard.

  • being someone who grew up with Super Mario brothers. This made my week!

  • such a lovely piece to hear live, and his sight-reading gives it some great charm

  • WOW!

  • I always admire people who has extraordinary sight reading abilit, mabye it's due to my rather pathetic sight reading ability that barely can finish a simple piece at 1st glance.....Is sight reading innate?

  • @zhengjdc Tom had the benefit of being taught to read music right from the very start at five years of age, so an ability to read and understand music (understanding is key) developed just like normal language skills. So in that sense, it is kind of innate. You'll notice that he doesn't play exactly all the notes that are written, but rather reads and understands what's on the page, then plays within that understood framework (which often means playing MORE than what's on the page!).

  • @Keeper1st

I play piano myself,at not bad level, but sight-reading is always my biggest problem, it hinders my ability to learn new pieces and making me almost impossible to play in church where they require you to be able to play various pieces.

  • @Keeper1st Can he play things by ear?

  • @SavageArms357 He has perfect pitch and does transcribe from old recordings. Closest I've seen to him playing by ear is to follow along on a second piano while someone else plays a tune he doesn't know. He can take up the melody the next time through if it's not too complicated. There's a "Fun with 2 pianos" video with him and Adam Swanson in which this happens.

  • @zhengjdc it's like anything i assume. it's a skill that is developed over time. talent differentiates the rate at which one improves, and one's maximum skill. someone with practice and no talent can be better than someone with talent and no practice, but given equal practice, someone with innate talent will be better.

just speaking from experience in sports... it's probably not exactly the same with piano

  • U need to show him some donkey kong country notes sometimes, especially the bonus stage songs from donkey kong country 2 and 3.

  • Great song! If Tom has time to play, could you recommend Castlevania - Bloody tears. I love that song!

  • Oh, c'mon, Moonbase Alpha people, go over to the Monty-Python-esque jazzy "lol" remix of this to post the Moonbase Alpha meme quotes.

  • john madden

  • The tempo of this one reminds me of "Remembering You" by Roger Kellaway (ending theme to All in the Family). I love it.

  • Have to love to Like / Dislike bar comparison!

  • aeiou

  • @gochulord hear comes anouther chinese earthquek ebrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbr

  • aeiou

  • In most (all?) of his vids this guy uses a different speed and acentuation than the original tune.

BUT...IMHO...I find he just makes the tune *perfect* choosing that particular speed etc.

AND...he is *just* sight reading...that's *real* talent you see her!!!

  • What i imagine bar music sounds like in the Marioverse.

  • Awesome! Great! Fantastic!!!

    from Japan....

  • This might be my imagination but Toms verson sound so melancholic and emotional, just awesome.

  • so when is Tom going to be releasing his video game rag compilation CD?

  • Wart walks into the Saloon, and the music stops. With Mario sitting at the bar with his manly glass of milk, Wart walks behind him. Mario take a sip, and BAM! Mario lobs a turnip at him jumps over him leaving the bar stools all knocked over.

  • 素晴らしい!!

  • 2 people fear the beard!

  • This guy is my hero ;-p

  • Awesome arrangement!! The only change I would make to sound more like the original is at measure 14, and 22, on the left hand, it should be D E C B A. :)

  • God this is... this is... just completely friggin awesome. Like holy crap. How much better does this tune sound at this tempo, seriously! I'd never have thought it.

    *FAVOURITES*

  • sounds like music from the old western bars...

  • Sight reading Super Mario Bros 2... That couldn' t be possible!!

  • Birdo and King Wart disliked this video.

  • downloaded ur score and been practicing for a while. this song is tough. tom brier is my hero

  • ♫ typing this comment felt so good while typing along with the beat. ♪

  • i fucking love this!

  • Perfect!

  • There's a rag in Cowboy Bebop called Piano Bar 1 that's pretty awesome, apart from one or two slips on the score I found is pretty much notated note-for-note though, would that matter much? Also, there's an, albeit shorter one, in Final Fantasy VIII called Slide Show Part 2, though I have the feeling you've found that one already ^^;

  • @makometeor Yes, a video has already been done with Tom sight-reading Slide Show Part 2.

  • Amazing!! Thank you.

  • Awesome playing. +1 for the beard.

  • Clever Japanese....interesting info.

  • I have to say, I'm very impressed with your transcriptions. Youtube is riddled with a lot of great renditions with a few tragically wrong notes. But you always do a fantastic job.

  • Keeper1st!

i hope you could make him play Super Mario Brothers 2 Character Select Theme!

  • sounds great but pick up the pace!!!

  • Is this halftime?

  • well, this is all pretty impressive. but will it blend!?

  • amazing job for a first timer!

  • King Koopa and Mouser found this video!

  • @MrRiffraff84 King Koopa wasn't in Super Mario Bros. 2 (U). And enough with the lame ass YouTube memes. They're fucking old.

  • @Shiro786 He was in the cartoon-series, so was Mouser. And this was kinda the main theme.

  • Uh. What came first? The videogame or the tv show?

  • That song sounds perfect with that piano as opposed to the 8 bit. Like it was written just for that specific instrument.

  • 2 goombas disliked this

  • @dermerkita Why goombas? They weren't in Super Mario Bros USA/2

  • @InuYashafanboyee klugscheißer

  • @dermerkita What?

  • @InuYashafanboyee What he said was the German equivalent of "smartass".

  • the paper fainted from hearing the greatness of Tom Brier

  • Can you ask Tom if he could play the character select screen?

  • Welcome to Luigi Casino!

  • this really reminds me of the mario cartoon, when their in the western style saloon

  • Give him SM2 Character Select. He'd probably love it

  • lol - human-synthesia

  • at this tempo sounds like a music to drink a beer at a bar in the old west ages

  • there is something about those Mario tunes that makes them unforgettable

  • Can someone PLEASE learn me to play this intrument!!! ?

  • I could have sworn I was a toy and in the movie toy story while listening to this. :x

  • @Naraflames Now where you mention it, it does sound like something by Randy newman!

  • it likes jazz... so good

  • 0:26 Piece of paper: LOL im gonna fall >:D

    Hand: No you arent D:<

  • Dude that is awesome man

  • Wow.. Brings back memories -Great job!

  • this must be played in a saloon!!!! would be very funny

  • Dayuuuum!

  • Imagining myself in the old west and hearing to this..... niiiiice...

  • Could you ask Tom if he could play this in minor?

  • theres an awesome rag-like theme from One Piece, I looked for it as "One Piece Party Theme"

Do you think he could play it? I am a big fan of Tom : )

  • @thapL4y That's a fun little rag strain, and there's already a pretty decent transcription out there. I can hear a few missing notes but I should be able to work them into a new score. Thanks for the suggestion. Hadn't heard any ragtime from anime before.

  • @Keeper1st

Could you provide me with the link to the sheet music? I can't find it...

  • @Keeper1st can you send me all the supermario sheet music you know. Im desperately looking for it thanx.

  • @lowfatlatte0 Just about everything I've transcribed or made a score for is in the same directory as the PDF linked in the description. The directory is open for browsing.

  • I love these videos! i've always felt like mario music sounded ragtimey and this man is astounding! his playing is flawless and his embellishments add so much to the music

  • why isn't Berkley school of music giving this guy an honorary PhD. Pft...what am I saying as if he needs it.

  • I love it when he improvises.

  • Tom Brier...man, I hope you can take word to him that hearing him play on the ol' Tube really makes my day!

  • TOM is just AMAZING if he hadn't heard it before O_o

  • the tempo is woderful, it sounds kinda like a saloon

  • You should see if you can get Tom to play the Super Mario Bros 2 ending theme, that's real ragtimey too!

  • @Omega52 Yes, he liked it when I sent him a recording of that one. I just need to transcribe it. The existing transcription attempts are poor and get the chords all wrong.

  • @Keeper1st Awesome, just be sure to upload it when you're done haha, can't wait!

  • LOLLL oops yeah it was to the wrong guy, ma bad it was @lefrufru

  • whoa! really nice version! please, please do us a tutorial of your version !

  • かなりゴージャスな夢工場ドキドキパニックですねwww

  • fantastic tempo. reminds me of slow music that use to play during the credits at the end of a tv show. Super mario Bros 2 was filmed in front of a live audience.

  • @madwalrus9998

Couldn't agree more. TV needs MORE RAGTIME!!! (and more cowbell).

  • This is amazing. I cant get over how good it is.

  • I thought the official story about why we got this game over the true sequel was because the true sequel was deemed too difficult for American audiences, but the NOA President.

But more on point, I'm enjoying all these videos of him on youtube. Pretty cool.

  • piano sheet at 0:25 fell down due to his powerful force of his fingers though it may look soft.

  • I can imagine Annette hanshaw's voice over this tune! nice tempo

  • Can I request the legend of Zelda theme?

  • Using the HTML5 video player you can change the playback speed without changing the pitch. Setting this video to 1.5x speed gets the tempo just about right to match the game. Of course we all know Tom could do it at that pace if he wanted to anyway.

  • It sounds beautiful at this tempo!!!

  • my beautiful credit to you you fucking savant pianist bastard.

  • could you suggest him to play Zelda Twilight Princess - Hyrule Field?

And He is the awesomest pianist iv'e ever heard on youtube :D

  • @felinec you sir, fail

    just leave

  • @felinec xD

So felinec, you could play the song faster in your first look trough?

    Respect

  • Bro can you make a playlist of all of his video game / cartoon w/e themes?

  • "I can't go in there, Sal, there's a guy in there wearing the same hat as me!"

    "The usual please, Dodger"

"We don't like your type around here, boy"

  • Somehow it ain't a saloon-themed music. Still, my ears tell me it could fit. Beeing slow, but with a rusty piano makes it.

    *Dum dee dum*

  • I do like this song being played a little bit slower as Tom's version . Sounds gentle and like a dance.

  • it's so great, I would totally buy a cd with my favorite nintendo tunes on piano on it.

  • Bravo! that's fantastic,

why don't they put these muscis into the smb2 remakes?

  • farkkk this guy is good

  • still waiting to see someone play this accurately to speed on piano. He played it great, but in reality its a very fast song and difficult

  • Speed is perfect; we're not playing Super Mario Bros. 2, heh. We're listening to a piano adaptation.

  • nice

  • @LeFruFru Because I told him to take it at a leisurely tempo. I hadn't heard the original either; just looking at the music, it seemed liked a slower tempo was "correct".

  • @Keeper1st I think it sounds great either slow or the original tempo.its more of a leisurely strolling melody if you ask me.like your just takin a walk around town or in the park.

  • @Keeper1st

its supposed to be waaaaaay faster lol.

  • @Keeper1st I kinda like this tempo, sounds like a Jazz Blues. ;) try to accompany that with drums. :)

  • @Keeper1st Also, it makes more sense to play this piece slowly. Mr. Brier does a great job of imbuing the piece with that ragtime feel and tempo.

  • @Keeper1st dumbass, why dont you put up a video of yourself playing that song double speed.

  • @chrissd11 dude i think you're replying to the wrong guy...

  • @LeFruFru

Man this tempo is good, because this is ragtime version.

    You play great.

  • @LeFruFru in my opinion it sounds way better this way, seems fitting of its composure

  • Wow, that guy is really talented. I like the slower tempo with that song, too.

  • I've always loved this song. Mr. Brier plays it so well! I wonder, does he like it, as well?

  • Keeper1st..日本語がしゃべるの?

  • @phixxwutwut A little. I studied the language for a year, but that was 20 years ago. (Yes, boys and girls, I studied Japanese before it was cool. I didn't study it because of anime or anything; I just wanted to study a language that wasn't based in Latin or Greek.)

  • @Keeper1st haha, yeah. the way you pronounced a few of the words made me thought that you knew how to speak a bit heh. plus i see kanji and japanese in your descriptions, pretty cool.

  • @phixxwutwut I noticed that putting in the Japanese titles greatly increases the viewership in Japan (naturally as they're more likely to search titles in Japanese, and it's more likely to appear on a Related Videos list next to a Japanese video), so I always try to do that where possible. There is a video I made a few years ago called "Keeper speaking Japanese" in which you can hear me reading the plot overview of the Animal Crossing movie.

  • @Keeper1st Thats is so awesome i love the Japanese culture and really whant to real jananese, can you tell me where you learned it?

I only know the basics :S

    こんにちは。私の名前はヌノサントスです。お会い出来て嬉しいです。

Watashiwa Nuno Santos desu. Hajimemashite. :P

  • @Megabine I studied it at a community college. Our sensei was a Japanese woman who didn't speak the best of English. The second-semester class began with 36 students but 30 of them dropped out before the final. Only six of us survived to the end. She did not slow down the class for people who couldn't learn at the class pace. The class was covering the next subject whether you were ready for it or not!

  • @Keeper1st Well, if you really want something you like then you will work for it!

That's what i always think of.

Plus i learned english from watching cartoons with 5 years xD

  • @Keeper1st

sounds like studying mathematics in germany :D

  • @Keeper1st WOW THATS AWESOME. AND PEOPLE ALWAYS TALK SHIT ABOUT COMMUNITY COLLEGE. ITS AMAZING HOW PEOPLE DROP OUT OF THAT CLASS AND I CANT GET PEOPLE TO TEACH ME PERIOD. O THE IRONY AND CONTRASTS OF REALITY AND THE INTERNET. WHERE DID YOU GO TO COMMUNITY COLLEGE?

  • @ZEROEVILDARKCOOL My Japanese classes were at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California. That was 20 years ago. Yes, I studied Japanese before it was cool. I just wanted to learn how a language not based on Latin or Greek worked.

  • @Megabine just go to japan, youll learn quick enough.

  • @phixxwutwut Its easy for you to say.

Your not living on a country thats on crissis :(

  • He should enter a talent show!!!!!!

  • sounds beautiful!

  • I seem to recall that Doki Doki Panic was turned into SMB2 for the USA because the original SMB2 was thought to be far too difficult for American gamers. The game was not a flop in Japan, Nintendo just had very low expectations of the capabilities of US players. Given that we've since then seen the REAL SMB2 as Lost Levels in Super Mario All Stars and now also as WiiWare, they weren't too far off in those assumptions- Lost Levels is punishingly tough.

  • Yeah I've heard that it was either too tough or that is was too similar to the first Mario. I guess it depends on who you talk to.

  • Have you met Toad? He's princess Peach's p.a. Just between us: I think he's definitely gay. You may not agree, but listen close and you see: He's very likely to be a big gay (big gay). He shops for shoes like Areza Franklin at a big hat store He's a Judy idolizer with facial moisturizer galore (gay, gay, gay, gay, gay) He loves ballet and he owns the golden girls on DVD He went to seminaries, Link sais:"He's a fairy for sure." (And Link knows his fairies)
  • On the other hand he may just be metro, many guys are going that way toda~ay and if he's gay we still would like (would like) him anyway. That's my friedn Toad, he is definitely gay, it's not his fault, they cultivated him that way, he swears that he's bi, we're pretty sure it's a lie but anyway a fungi who sais:"Hey!" (Lyrics by youtuber "Brentalfloss")
  • Welcome to the Western, people! haha love it!

  • it took me more than a week to learn near the end of the first page of this score :( kind of depressing how good he is. haha :)

  • I love ragtime; I wish there was some kind of ragtime festival in North Carolina :(

  • @ayashiiguy A bit of a drive, but there are some ragtime concerts held in Fairfax, Virginia, featuring people you see on my channel. Look up the Northern Virginia Ragtime Society.

  • i never realized how awesome this song was until i heard it here.

  • This is simply outstanding.

  • Looks like the Paper that fell was getting jealous of the one being played. ;D

  • Sounds like the Super Mario Bros. Super Show version of the song, because of how slow it's being played.

  • Wow. That is so cool.

  • Does Tom have any upcoming concerts or public playings?

  • @cyclos12 He plays frequently in the Sacramento area. Some Wednesdays at the Straw Hat Pizza in Rancho Cordova, at the monthly Sacramento Ragtime Society meetings, the bimonthly Mother Lode Ragtime Society meetings (in Sutter Creek). He'll be at the free Ragtime Corner venue in the Hyatt Regency Sacramento on Memorial Day weekend. To name a few.

  • @Keeper1st Sacramento... how I miss thee

  • @Keeper1st Is he ever in the San Francisco/Berkeley area? :3

  • @sstrunks5555 It's been known to happen (occasional concerts), but not any regular gigs in that area as far as I know. But if you're in that area, I recommend the Pier 23 Cafe on Tuesday evenings. That's ragtime night, starting at 5 p.m. Some of the performers you see on my channel play there.

  • @Keeper1st Awesome :D Thanks for the info. Keep the awesome vids coming!

  • You must have talent when you can read the sheets!! Your soo talenteddd!!!
