  • Have you ever studied a quadruped's anatomy and how they walk? Obviously not. This is laughable.

  • poor animation

  • ohh I am 60,666 viewer!

  • Not the best drawing, but it gave me a pretty good idea on how to animate.

  • NOW THAT U GOT EVERYTHING DOWN, PEOPLE START MAKING UR OWN ANIME lol jk well if u want, im trying to

  • A better question than "is this a tutorial" is why the heck does this have so many views.

  • @Urthrun I'm in agreement. That I made stuff like 3 and a half years ago makes me feel ashamed nowadays.

If I remade this today, I'd certainly be a lot more thorough.

  • wheres the wings? it looks like a dinosaur with tusks...

  • omg the reason i only do black and whit stickman in flash is because of pressing F7 or F6 over and over and having to draw it alot.so i'm tryin to mod it to make it easier

  • hmmmm nice

  • EEEWWW... do you know very much about the anotomy of animals? Or physics? There is not a single animal with four knees as you've shown here, because any animal with four knees would fall flat on it's face. It should have elbows. If you noticed it was bad, but couldn't figure out what, try switching the direction of the joints and doing it again. It will look much better.

  • @nikstick22 An Elephant has 4 knees. Go back to school. Instead of insulting someone on Youtube. I mean really do you hate yourself that much.

  • @iAndrewTech GODAMMIT. NO, THEY DON'T. STOP BEING SUCH A STUPID PRICK, AND YOU GO BACK TO SCHOOL. YOU. ARE. RETARDED. THERE ARE NO ANIMALS WITH FOUR KNEES. DEAL WITH IT.

  • @nikstick22 huh, i never noticed that. but seriously, it's a dragon, it's made up. even though a crap load of them don't have 4 knees in pictures or movies. Also the point of this video is to teach people how to animate a dragon walking, if there's something wrong then they just have to tweek it a little.

  • кто знает что то за овалы вверху были под которыми по две точки было ?

  • did you draw the dragon in PhotoShop first and import it to flash?

  • @brickez Nope. I sketched it in Flash, I then did the lineart and symbols in Flash, and animated it in Flash. If I had drawn it in Photoshop and imported it into Flash, I'd have had to slice it into animatable form (take chunks and make them into symbols)

  • thanks for the info and the fast reply :)

  • the program you use, camtasia 4, is it free or is it something you need to buy?

    lovely run =p

  • @Dracindo It's not free, but it has a 30-day trial.

  • @Dracindo The program he is using is macromedia flash i think it ranges in price from $400 to $600

  • it'll be nice if you made his toes move seperately from the foot. but otherwise looks fine

  • to much work for a 5 second animation

  • @emptygrace9 The funny part is, if this were made with traditional animation, it would take me much, MUCH longer than this.

  • that's the deal, dude

  • where did u get that, can u give a link plz?

  • If only flash works so well. Whenever I try to do this It goes crappy and rotates all the wrong ways.

  • @pelepone Make sure your anchor points are in the right spots.

  • Is there a way i can save the walk cycle and reuse when ever i need to use the same walkcycle?

  • In a way, yes. You can copy the various frames over, and since they're symbols, you can then "Swap..." them with the new graphics for each limb.

But you can't save a 'skeleton' that will apply itself to symbols.

  • that looks horrible :/ no easing at all!

  • pfftt, i can draw better (jk) well, i can draw dragons, but there is no way i can animate them...5/5 stars.

  • wow, that an awesome model!

  • sux sux sux

  • Naaw! How cute dragon! I read that somebody missed the wings, but hey, nobody have seen evidence or a real life dragon so how the heck do you know if it should have wings!!??

    Love the horns!!^^D

  • hey what did you use to get the movement on the legs?

  • Frame by frame using the Transform tool (and rotated symbols that way)

  • Okay, thanks for the quick reply.

  • walking looks.. well it was missing something... i dunno maby it was stiff or something but it looked weird.. 4/5

  • Very still. I dare say you're giving an extremely generous score. But this is more about using flash than it is showing a proper walk cycle.

  • actually, his score is not that bad. not many people can even draw such a nice dragon. let alone animate one!

  • This is bad as a tutorial.

    You didn't explain anything!

You just made us watch you do it for almost ten long and painful minutes.

No that style of animation isn't that easy.

P.S. The dragon wasn't all that good looking. It wasn't bad but WHERE WERE THE WINGS!

  • Well, it's not a tutorial. It's a demo. It's not there to explain, it's there to do a quick, speedy example of what one can do in 20 minutes.

And simple. They weren't there. Not all dragons have wings. Besides, that was a shoddy dragon to begin with.

If I wanted to make something glorious that you could see on the silver screen, it'd have taken a lot more than 20 minutes accelerated to 10 minutes.

If it was a tutorial, yes, I would have spoken or written.

  • @Gothicanime20 Read the damn title

    Its not a tutorial....

  • @Gothicanime20 its not a turtorial its just show him/her animatin

  • hod od i do this on macromedia flash pro 2004?

  • The exact same way I did this in Flash 8. Flash MX still has symbols, still has rotations, still has frames. There's no difference.

  • close parts

  • i hope this made by macromedia and not by adobe!right?

and how make this as one part?

  • The version of Flash I'm using in that video is Macromedia Flash 8.

However, the newer versions of Flash now belong to Adobe.

And as one part? What do you mean?

  • You made this look a little more complicated then it really is, (In my opinion anyway).

But it looked pretty cool none the less.

  • it's not that easy..

  • good job man , also good music :)

  • cs4??

  • Flash 8

  • with the new bone tool in cs4 this will be really easy to do.

  • No it wont the Bone tool is buggy as hell, traditional is still better, wait a couple more versions of flash and maybe but not now

  • wow F6 thx for the tip dude my first animation looked like CRAP but now theyll be better thx alot

  • tbh it moves kinda fast, if u still have the .fla file for it u could try changing the frame rate and seeing if its any better ?

  • cool, thanks

  • this is my problem:all the vids show me how they do this and that but since yesterdai i onli know that you have to push f6 to next frame, dont know how to drow line and make it move because you dont show what to push.!!! So thx but no thx.P.S. If someone whants to help me please send mesage,i promise i only whish to know few things to start!!

  • What program is that?

  • As listed in the comment and the movie name, Flash

  • flash 8

  • It takes much more than guessed leg positions to make a decent walk cycle.

    Easy, yes. ...but not good.

  • It's more about using Flash to animate symbols than it is about how to make a good animation. I know there's lo~ots of wrong with the animation itself... but a lot of people don't know how to use flash. So that's a demo for it.

  • how do u get those things on ur drawing that alot you to move them? im i making fucking sence

  • See my 'drawing a dragon in Flash' part 1 and 2 to see how I drew it.

  • Hey, that is actually alright. I can't believe there are people here that say this is shit, and get thumbs up for it, which I think is just mean. The frame rate was a little too high though, and you should have set it as a loop, but great job anyway.

  • awesome i didn't know flash worked like this show me how u made the dragon

  • it would look better if it slowed the fuck down

  • wow thst was super cool!

  • WTF IS THIS SHIT?

    SERIOUSLY?

  • Well this is a walk cycle tutorial, not a graphic tutorial

  • @UerMom Yes, that's how they're animating.

  • This is a great tutorial

However,If I were you I would study some anatomy, Whilst your anatomy so far is very good,I would tweak it abit to create some waaay awsum dragons!

  • BOOOORING

  • indeed

  • i might get this cuz i do a bit of animation and this looks alot eassier then paint and WMM

  • it costs a lot of money u no. I got it free tho lol i made a tutorial to get it free if u want it.

  • if u need a cerial code i can get u 1 free just download it and when it ask you for code put it in

  • il just download the keygen :)

  • okay :D

i dont get it tho that isnt what my flash looks like...

  • mine either lol

  • hah this is what i mean for sum reson my flash allways disapers when i hit f7 for next frame and i no to click thingy to make it so you can see the shadow, but i dont wana have to keep drawing the same picutre over agin just so i can make him move a little just like how hes doing it

  • To say at the end "the head and torso "could" move" at the end is a bit foolhardy. Its like animating a single leg and putting "The other legs could move"

  • Your missing quite a few fundamentals of animation. I would look into a book called "The Animators Survival Guide"

One of the major things you are missing is a "down" pose for the walk, without it, it makes your character look like its floating, and disjointed with anything its doing.

"But this is good for flash" is a horrible ideology. Flash is a tool, just as maya is a tool, just as a pencil is a tool.

What your doing in this clip is moving things on a screen

  • It was pretty good, but a voice-over would've been better. There are some people who are audio learners instead of visual. No, it's not that difficult, but it's just something to remember. Mics can usually be bought for about ten dollars at Radioshack.

  • I've always hated how my recorded voice sounds. ^^

I will, however, keep it in mind and have thought of it for future lessons, when I ever manage to chug some out.

  • ummmm wheres the wings?

  • It's ummmmh... a... lizard-blooded dragon. Yeah, that's the ticket.

  • sorry...i just figure out that part. which one would you think its better and have the best effect in animation? toonboom or flash? Thx and look forward to more of your tutorial.

  • Toonboom will have the potential for the most efficient, most powerful and better looking animations.

However, Flash is small and cheap, and flash shows like Akumi or Bitey of Brackenwood prove that the medium can be extremely powerful and detailed as well.

In the end, it depends on what you want to do.

  • I am sorry..i am trying to get the outline of the character. I think u click on the onion skin outlines but how come u can switch the outline and the full color so easily? When i do that i still have the full color together with the outline. sorry...i am very new to flash and hope you would enlighten me though on this. ;)

  • Actually, if you look on your layer (in the layers' tab), you will see a small, colored square next to the layer name. Clicking on this will make every element on that layer into 'outline' mode, which is what I use when I move limbs that are overlapped.

  • The best place to learn how to make cartoon animation's !!!

  • what software thats free?? i need a flash software but i dont know what software. i want a free 1 though because i am a kid and if i buy it my parents might think its a waste of money and stuff. so i need a free software.

  • you download it

there are plenty of people who post adobe flash cs3 or other programs and things like that if you know were to look you can download it

  • hey can you scan pics like i draw my pics so can i scan it and animate it?? can you show the process of showing it move? how do you make it into avideo with flash??? i dont really know much now but hey im a kid! please reply!!

  • I'm... not sure what you're asking. What do you mean by 'scan pics like I draw [my] pics'?

And I did show the process of making it move. In fact, that's the entire video. As for drawing it, check the two previous ones, 'making a dragon's head' and 'making a dragon's body'

And then you export it with Flash by going "File -> Export" and there you go, SWF file. However, it might depend on your software.

  • well i need a flash software or another software to make animation. by scanning my pic i mean, i draw a picture then i use a scanner and scan it so it is on my computer so i can edit it.

  • Then yes, you can scan pictures in, let's say, photoshop or whatever software came with your scanner, and then import it into Flash as the background image.

  • what flash software is free and i can download?? i need a software and make a video. thanks!

  • None that's good. You need to pay money.

  • He means like, if he can draw the picture he wants, scan it in to flash, and animate that pic in flash.

  • that was so boring aye....

  • the new flash are going to cost 2000$

  • Adobe Flash CS3 costs $699, nowhere near the far cry of $2000 you're claiming.

  • weres the up and down? very bad example of a walk cycle

  • I agree that, yes, it does suck for a walk cycle.

However, this isn't really a demonstration on making beautiful animations that will show in feature films. It's a demonstration of using Flash. Essentially, it's there to get people started in the program, since a lot of people have no clue how to do this sort of stuff.

  • so why not use the union skinning wich is very handy for frame by frame animation?

  • The problem is that you just have too many symbols piled up and most of the onion dissapears beneath them. The flip back and forth between 2 frames I do often on several points does the same thing with less clutter and less toggling. Though I could shortcut it.

In the end, it depends on how, you, like to work. If I redraw something (like, literally drawn frame by frame instead of animated frame by frame), then I also use onion skin.

  • Hey, love the background music, who is it and where can i get it?

  • does flash 8 come with comp or do u need to download or buy it?

  • u need 2 buy it. i think its like 200$ and up

  • llolololololololololololollololololololoplololloolollool

  • what software? flash?

What your doing in this clip is moving things on a screen.

  • UR totally right there!! The animators survival kit is a MUST! and 'this is good for flash' IS dumb.

What I think is meant by that is, its good for what you usually see in flash, becuase of the nature of most of the people who use flash which is usually the complete opposite of the nature of an animator. Animation is labour intensive art form an most people using flash pick it becuase they cant be bothered to learn to draw, so they also wont be bothered to do much else that animation requires.

  • Your missing quite a few fundamentals of animation. I would look into a book called "The Animators Survival Guide"

  • man, people spend alot of time learning flash when they could be learning to draw and animate traditionaly. It's alot of effort for something that will never look that good. If you dont want to learn to draw, then learn to animate in maya, it will look way neater and be more satisfying

  • maya is 3d animating. maya isnt freaking traditional. lol! wth r u talking about.

  • I know its not traditional, but if you don't think that drawing characters over and over again is ur thing then maya has a visually better result than flash

  • oh thats why you dont like flash! u dont have to draw characters over and over again! you can save them and using motion tween and stuff. i learned motion tween b4 drawing over and over!

  • I dont mind flash to draw straight into but I don't realy like the whole puppets and cut outs thing. I did an animation in after effects using cutouts and posted it here. it took me ages and I think that if my drawing skills were strong enough, it would have been easier and quicker just to draw it traditionally, and it would have looked better too. I think my main problem with it is that its hard to do any perspective movements where as youre free to go any way youy like if youre drawing.

  • aye i learnt traditionally, you learn how to make objects bounce and move, we avoided flash because it wasnt very easy to animate organic objects.. like say.. a cat jumping.. unless you were good.

  • Yeah thats the problem, people tend to go for flash becuase they feel its easier, but its only easier if you're not going to animate well, to make something look good in flash is harder than making something look good hand drawn, I just think, if youre not into drawing, go for 3d animation it looks much better than flash and if you can get good at it your career prospects are better, and if you absolutely must use something like flash, use After Effects.

  • sadly alot of people dont realise that hard work pays off, and after effects is awesome! saved many hours on that doing shadows!

  • Animations do look cleaner in 3d (rigging body bones models are simple), programs automatically make frames for each movement. But the initial design as well as making the movements realistic is harder to learn.

  • Thats definately true, it realy shows in 3D when somethings off, also pixar realy set the bar for how 3d should look whereas theres no real high quality studio leading flash. I'd like to see someone make a realy fluid flash animation, but I think most accomplished animators preffer drawn or 3D. I saw a pretty good stickman animation once.

  • Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends is a television show made with flash. It's really quite good quality, particularly for software such as flash.

  • whoa, with flash?

    cool!

  • i didnt kno that fosters home is very well animated i never would have guessed

  • Hmmm... Isnt it easier to motion tween?

  • cut out animation on flash??? cool i didn't know that, thanks for the tuturials

  • cool what is the name of the music

  • Aephion - Mother

medieval7 - Ode to the fallen

    i2abbitz - I am who I am

    Setu-firestorm - Make it rain

    It stands on the description

  • Hmmm... cool tutorial and pretty useful for curious flashers, good dragon you got there too. Only one major problem: The front legs bend backwards (ouch, that's gotta hurt!) That's why it looks so unnatural, but's that's ok! Tons of people screw this up. The best advice anyone interested in animation should have: Study animation, watch how things move, understand the principals (weight, followthrough, etc) and watch your skills improve. Keep at it! You've got something going here ^^

  • i think he should use onion skin and motion tween to create a better effect

  • i can draw a better dragon... but i doubt i could animate anything.... lol i admire animators so just shut up, Girlie1986

  • nice walk cycle! I havent gotten into twice the legs yet, Ill stick with humans for now. For alejito: The boxes are symbols, each section of the leg is a symbol that she transforms to get the effect. This is good for file size and animation, there is no proper way to "free form select" other than frame by frame drawing.

  • the head could bob a bit and the spine looked like it was kinda TOO un moveing otherwise awsome job!

  • does any one know how to free form select instead of doing the box thing? ty

  • you mean like the lasso tool?

  • cool ty

  • very good. welldone. Quite interesting, you didn't even edit the shapes, rather just tweaked the symbols. Didn't think of doing it that way. I like it :)

  • How do you export a Flash Movie, please can you help me?

    btw, nice animation!

  • file> export> movie

  • Thank you so much!! ^-^

  • HOLY CRAP NICE DRAGON!!

  • Wtf is this.... im sorry but this really stinks... is this a dragon????

  • great, thanx!!!!

  • It won't take forever to redraw it, just do one cycle for each one, then put them in about 5 secodns ahead of eachother, it will look better dumbass.

  • Redrawing over, for someone who is not a particularly great artist, increases the odds of the character not looking quite the same, especially when you have a hand-eye coordination tablet (graphire or intuos), or worse yet, only a mouse.

I am, however, learning animation in college, so I might repost a video at some point next year to show off my hopefully increased skills, which is much more likely to have some amount of frame-by-frame than my current works.

  • Hmm......I just got owned.

  • rlly?? lol

  • OMG this takes forever

  • Hey thanks! I learned some things with your vids!

btw, I think it DOES look like a dragon and the anatomy/style isn't bad! :] lol.

  • a bit stiff....but it is good :) please watch mine.....it isnt as good but it took me much much longer! :P

  • WHy not just redraw it every frame? it looks way better and is less gay.

  • If u redraw it every frame it'll take forever genius.

  • Why didn't you just tween the leg symbols, would have been faster, with better results.

  • A bit late of a response, but the reason was that I was keeping everything on one layer. I didn't want to deal with 14+ layers for a 20 minute demo. Also, dealing with rotation and placement by motion tweening causes strange rotationary glitches that, eventually, you can only fix by ending up with a frame by frame work.

  • Actuly scientificly dragons walk like the following.

4 legged- wolf or bear like

    2 legged- human like

fat stubby legged dragon- lizard like

  • sceintifically, dragons never existed. the only things that come close are some lizards.

  • scientifically? i see. would like to see your evidence from a reliable source too. :) along with evidence they actually ever existed...

  • There is at least one dragon design for each sentient human being. Some will say they should look like crocodiles, some will say they should look like komodo, some will say they should look like dinosaurs might have, some will say this, some will say that... this is just one type of design. Even a bipedal dragon might move differently than someone's else bipedal dragon.

  • doesn't the back move also ..with 4 legged creature..things..?

  • it looks like the "dragon" is walkin in the air .. u shud have made it with weight
