A beautiful tribute...I love Emmylou Harris...she has the voice of an angel... the writing of of her lyrics is "pure genuis." keep on rocking Emmylou!
MamaBullie, Your comment touched home for me. I was raised by well intended adoptive parents but my a-mom knew who I really was and took the info to her grave. May god forgive her, I can't. this song is perfect!!!
i heard this as a tracy chapman song. had no idea it was emmylou's. i am blown away..and once again moved to tears. at one time i had wanted to learn this song and i do now again........
Thank you Traci AND Emmy- I too was moved to tears by this post. coming up on the 40th anniv. of my mother's passing. I sometimes do not know how I have made it- and then sometimes I do. Thankful for the healing power of words and music no matter whose version opens the gates.
My brother was a huge music fan. Earlier this year, less than 2 months before he died, he called me to say he'd just been diagnosed with cancer. He was so brave. The only time during the conversation that he choked up a bit was in telling me about these lyrics sung by Emmylou. In his 46 years he lived the message expressed here, which enabled him to die at peace with his life. Fittingly, we played this at his memorial service. Thank you, Tracy and Emmylou, for touching people in a deep way.
Emmylou has such great taste in songs. This should and could have been Tracy Chapman's greatest moment but I always felt that the producer made a mess of its production on 'Crossroads'. I'd love if Tracy had another shot at it, on a live album maybe.
@brendanseanbarry@brendanseanbarry check out the BRIDGE SCHOOL CONCERTS there is a live version there - which is much better than the crossroads version
@brendanseanbarry I prefer Tracy'sversion. One voice, one guitar, one piano. It needs nothing more... I'd like Emmylou to sing it alone with her guitar, as she can do so well. "Don't be tempted by the shiny apple" of Daniel Lanois production, I'd say...
That's crazy...dyed her hair. She's naturally gray, same as me. I appreciate the fact that Emmylou did that instead of really dying her hair. I play her songs often on my radio show.
This song moved me to tears two nights ago as I listened in my car for the first time ever. The lyrics are so beautiful and her performance here is hauntingly beautiful. Having lost my Mamma at an early age, I could not help but be brought back to the loss of her. We never had the chance to have an adult conversation about our souls. I have been missing her tremendously lately, nearing the date of her passing. Thank you Emmylou for bringing her memory back so sweetly.
@MammaBullie - I found my mama two years after she died. The first time I ever heard this song it just plain broke my heart. I was told huge lies about her by the vermin who raised me until I could strike out on my own. I was able to contact folks who knew her and about me and we could connect with what she was. To this day I have serious issues with people who mistreat their mamas. I am sorry you lost your mama so young. You do have the memories though. That counts for something...

Not only the music and voice of an angel but probably the best weapon against the bad and cheap "music" of our times...

As much as I love EmmyLou Harris and her music, I must say I like the original version of this song by Tracy Chapman the best

my god i love this song, it hits ya right in the gut...
I have to say I cringe when someone "tries" to cover a Tracy Chapman song, But a gifted soul like Emmylou is about the only one that can pull it off.
