thank God they moved the fuel water separator to the side of the motor.....on the fichts you have to take off the air intake cover and the lower housing
BTW. I am in NYC bay area. There are a lot of small CG, Navy, Police and fire boats here. And most of them are using Etec engines. Not even most. I am yet to see a single law enforcment outboard using anything else but Etec.
One of the great thing is the winterisation procedure. No need to take spark plugs out, spray suff into cylinders. Just a little manipulation with throttle and all iternal comonents are covered with oil. I change oil in the lower gear box every year just in case, but the manual says you can do it only once in 3 years. But so far, when I do it, the old oil comes out absolutely clean. No discoloration, no water and no metal shavings.
My fifth yar using 150 E-tec. Replaced the spark plugs. Old ones didn't show any kind of problems. Therostats - same thing. Fuel filter - clean. Gear oil - changing it every year - not a sign of any metal shavings or water emultion. Oil comes out as new.
@pearldrummerbt123 I spent a lot of time on the water. One thing I can tell you that small boats used by the Coast Guard and local police are powered by E-Tecs. - My observation. It's in NYC area.
@pearldrummerbt123 mercury is my favorite. We've had a mercury 25hp on our 14ft aluminum boat, and its never broken down. Its about 8-9 years now, and not once has there ever been a problem. And the thing flies. And we just bought a nice fiberglass 18ft boat for water-skiing and stuff used, with a mer-cruiser 3.0L 130hp engine with a alpha one stern drive, the boat is from the 80's and it works great! Mercury is reliable and great! Evinrude is great too! My uncle had one and it rode great!
good choice, choose only to 2 cycles or DFI, 2 cycles engines. if you choose 4 cycles engine, just for the overhauling job come in. the bill and parts kill and put a hole in your pocket. if you complain of the gasoline spent using 2 cycles engines then stop going boating. try re-power your engine to DFI, 2 cycles engine. sad it truth in our country (malaysia) evinrude engine is more expensive then the 4 cycles engine. both evinrude/johnson brand is kill off in the boating industries.

@ at walkingfearless i tottally agree i also work at a e-tec dealrship and i hate e-tec there is nothing good about them..you can never own one of these motors without taking it to a dealship guys...this thing is always in need of updates...you pretty much have to put the computer on this pieace of crap for every little thing..plus i hate it how e-tec is always trying to compare to four strokes...thats a complete no brainer...
@pearldrummerbt123 Yeah when they're running they are definitely a good engine, however they're so prone to all kinds of problems it's not worth it. I would personally never own one, and i work for an Evinrude dealership
do this Etec burn gas as fast as regular two stroke Engine? i have 115 merc and it burns gas lots and its morethen my truck to fill up just for a one time use.
They are the cleanest outboard around, don't care what the 4 strokers say, maintenance cost is way down compared to the competition, and most of all, almost no back orders on parts, so you back on the water fast, my 2 cents
I thought that this was supposed to be an unbiased test. It's accually a three minute and fifty one second Evinrude commercial. I wounder how much Evinrude paid this guy???
great setup! that tritoon must be really cool to hang out on. like to keep my 951 cc hydrospace standup ski on it . and e-tec is great engine! 2 strokes direct injection are king! cleaner burning than 4 strokes
you only have to work on it every 3 years HAHAH! i have had my yamaha 115 2 stroke for engine for 10 years and the only thing i have changed is the lower unit oil
Really? Cause I've had my yamaha 40 for 10 years, and have changed the lower unit oil, starter, water pump, thermostat, choke unit, and now one of my coil packs is bad.
yeah... I've am seeing more of these engines as well out on the lake. So sad that the Fight ruined OMC... they were such a good company with reliable products... but now glad that Bombardier has now improved the Evinrude... they are making a big comeback..
The Johnson line in north america has been disolved. For a brief period of time suzuki supplied the doomed OMC corp with fourstroke engines badged as Johnsons. BRP claims hold to the Johnson name with no intention of letting go as they apparently see potential for its use in the future. As for Evinrude, it will still hold its place on the water but will never be the brand it once was in its best years. Boaters of all types have switched and stay true to Yamahas and Mercs.
syeager9; those were the good old days, you could work on the mototr yourself and getting it running. Today its so coplicated but I guess thats the trade off to better fuel mileage and speed.
I can't tell why BRP split their product lines, but it's true that Johnson line covers engines up to 25hp and Evinrude anything higher and all the way up. Before BRP bought them, Johnson and Evinrude used to be basically same engines with only cosmetic differences. I used to have couple of old engines in 80s and all the parts were the same for either Johnson or Evinrude. It was like GMC Gimmy and Chevy Blaser.
@syeager9 - evinrude and johnson havent been the same since '99. that sucks. im looking hard for a 225 johnson, and was told the latest 225s were rebadged suzukis, but great none of the less.
@SDR450R BRP bougt both names and split the product lines. You can't find Johson over 25HP anymore. Some 20 years ago I had 90HP Johnson and they used to be mechanically identical to Evinrude. Suzuki, as far as I understand, pushing their 4 strokes now. My friend recently had a problem with his 10 yr old 2 stroke Suzuki, and after 3 reapairs that cost him almolst $1000 and it failed again (burned piston), the mechanic suggested not to waste anymore money and get new 4 strokes.

@syeager9 - when i said "looking for a 225 johnson, i was referring to the rebadged suzuki 4 stroke circa 2006 model. there are some out there. If not, i'll settle on the 225 two stroke. ive been eyeballing a friends boat for years, its a '96 cobra with 225 johnson in pristine condition, and he's looking for a new boat.
@SDR450R If you want to repower, old Johnson and new Evinrude can use same wirering, engine gage and engine/shift controls. If you want to go with the different brand, it will cost you $1000 or so extra to replace this stuff. And I think Evinrude Etec is the engine that is superior to any 4 stroke in this class for many reasons. Took me time to do the resarch when I wanted to replace my old Johnson. Not a single problem since 2007. Starts on the first revolution after winter storage.
Evinrude is not a Norwegian-American brand; its a Canadian brand, owed by Bombardier. They bought it when it went bankrupt. BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products). Good old Canadian Product.
Thats neat, thanks for the info. I think all of the DFI's are all pretty good, I just find Evinrude's infomercials a bit much. Racing fourstrokes for two miles coming ahead by four seconds but making it look like its a lot over couple hunderd yards at the end.Today Evinrude, Mercury,Honda and Yamaha are all good outboards. Some HP class are a bit better than others but not by much, they are all close with each other.
Yeah, theres small differences, I liked the Evinrude torque commercial against Yamaha where they have a "tug of war" between two 150 HP. That made me laugh, I think it was a bit exaggerated. :-D
And the DFI replacing the carburetor is great, especially on the two-stroke, but they are beginning to make it a standard technology on newer 4-strokes as well. But I wonder why Mercury calls their own 4-stroke Verado the only supercharged outboard..?
Torque tag of war was funny, but not far from truth. E-Tec has higher torque at mid RPM then any 4 stroke. In fact it's fundamental thing about all 2 strokes. You can find torque curves on Google. Only thing that I missed in old engines is that I was able to fix them myself in most cases. Sometimes on the water :) If something breaks in E-Tec - there's no way you can fix it, unless it's something really simple like starter or thermostat. But it's true about all modern engines.
I repowered my boat with 150 E-Tec last year, replacing 13 year old Johnson that was falling apart. Took me a lot of searching forums and doing some other research. 2 seasons, and I am still convinced E-Tec was the best choice.
Johnson and Evinrude are simply 2 brand names manufactured by the same company. However Johnson and Evinrude differ in HP ranges. Johnson is low HP and Evinrude is high. So there is no Johnson with 150HP anymore.
When BRP bought OMC they discontinued Johnsons line because they were four-strokes, BRP put their eggs in one basket, the two-strokes DFIs. I believe the only Johnsons you can buy now are the 9.9-25hp four-strokes.
I have an 83 Skeeter Wrangler HP120 rated for a 115 but I strapped a 200 etec on the transom.... I had a 83 mariner 115 on it and got a top speed of 46-52 mph depending on how many people were in the boat with the etech i now have a top speed of 112-118 mph.....it rocks!!!!!
love evinrude! we have a stratose 219 with a 150 horse evinrude intruder-spitfire seriese. we have had it since 93 and it is still puting out around 56 mph. it is fun to watch it beat some of the newer boats in fishing tournaments! good motors!
I have a 2006 23 mako with a 225 etec. My fuel burn at 32 mph is 8.1 gph. And i can troll for 6 hrs on 1 gallon of gas. My top speed is 50mph. And i have owned yamaha and mercury. I love my Etec!!
I hope you all know, Evinrude hired Honda engineers to design the E-tec motor. It is based off of Honda's V-tec, variable valve timing system. Save up, you'll get a Honda outboard some day. My wife works for Evinrude but Im Honda all the way.
Shows how little you know about boat engines....Honda is a 4 stroke engine with valves, ETEC's are 2 stroke, direct injection engines that have no valve train at all.....Honda's are good engines...but etecs are superior in weight to power and torque...
evinrude are the best. our boat has the black 75 hp. theese engines have just as much power as 4-strokes but weight up to 100 kg less i think! i love them
This engine looks very nice, but what ever happened to Johnson? Didn´t they used to have big 4-stroke outboards? But on the BRP website I can only see Johnson portables. Looks like Johnson is singing its swansong to me, unfortunately.
