Hey Brodie, I love your vids, you know I didnt really care much about sports till I saw your vids and it looked pretty awesome to learn. I'm kind of having a problem with getting my wrist to flick and when it does not flick, it just spins and drops to the ground and when i almost get it to flick, it turns left and smashes into the ground. If you could help with that that would be awesome, thanks.
Hey brodi Id like to know how to thro a forehand really far and how to put alot of speed on a forehand, when i try to thro with more power i just wobbles off high in the wrong direction
hey brodie, been watching alot of your trick shot videos and others and starting to really enjoy watching, also want to start playing. is there any particular ultimate Frisbee i should get, certain brand or something? thanks hope to hear from you soon
hi brodie.i started to play Frisbee after i watched your videos.but the problems is i dont know nothing about the game rules.like the final game score or fouls.could you make a video to explain the basic frisbee's rules.thanks for your attention.
Hey Brodie I have a problem. The bottom side of my middle finger hurts when I forehand flick because it feels like it's bruised. I don't know from what , but I think somehow my flick slides off the side of my finger and causes it trauma. Is the disc suppose to roll off the middle finger ?
@brodiesmith21 This is an entirely different way of throwing a forehand then I was taught. I was taught to keep the forearm flat and to angle the disc down. I haven't gotten to try the way you show here yet, so I can't say if which method works better, but have you ever seen a forehand thrown like this?
If anyone is having trouble just with the stability of their flicks, I would suggest holding the disk by making a peace sign as opposed to a gun when you grip the disk, so your index finger is more in the middle of the disk. you sacrifice alot of power, but who cares if you can throw the disk hard if it wobbles and is never accurate. Of course, if you can do it Brodie's way, that's clearly ideal.
I'm just starting off with frisbee and really interested in your videos. I just have to ask one thing.
I have really small hands a it is very hard to grip the frisbee comfortably and stably for the forehand grip. Do you have any ideas or recommendations for me?
I play tennis an it looks like a forehand swing haha I bet if I tried I could pick up this style of throw... When I play UF I mostly just use backhand
Hey Brodie, I just want to say I love your videos! We are doing Ultimate Frisbee/Frisbee Golf in P.E. and I was kinda dreading it because i thought it wasn't very fun! Once i saw one of your videos i was hooked on and i love your trick shot videos! You have kind of inspired me to give it a shott! who knows if i will really like it or if i will ever really play but i am just impressed with your videos! keep up the good work man!
@brodiesmith21 for OI forehands, do you straighten your elbow or keep it bent? ive been trying both, and changing other things around, but can't seem to make this throw smooth. this is the one part of my game that needs improvement,
@brodiesmith21 Hey Brodie, I'm just curious as to how much will more power from the arm when throwing will affect the distance or rotation on the disc. I'm a baseball player and I play on weekends with a group of people here at my command, I've been trying to learn how to throw this for a while and it's kind of difficult but I'm getting there. I would just like to know, will more power affect the distance of the disc or the rotation of the disc? Or does that all depend on the wrist?
Hey Brodie, I have been trying to work out the kinks in my forehand and one of them is the disc tilting to the right and therefore turning right and not to the left or going straight. do u think a simple change is to release the disc flatter?
What I do is not put my middle finger on the inside rim of the frisbee and point my index finger towards the middle. I don't use my ring finger and pinky. Also I put my thumb on the ring. I let it roll off my middle finger. My friend who use to plays ultimate frisbe taught me this :)
hey brodie, what's up? I'm having problems with my throw although I've seen your video several times, although I do not feel comfortable about the position to be taking my body to execute the launching and wrist. thanks
Didn´t know that ultimate frisbee are that big. IM from Sweden and we play sometimes in school but we dont have any teams or anything. Atleast I dont think so.
At about 1.50 you talk about the wrist motion. You say in the video, you should start with the disc vertical then drop it to the side before bending your wrist back and then forward.
But when you watch Alex Hill's slow-mo at 5.07 he seems to bend his wrist back first before then dropping the disc to the side and then forward, almost in a circular motion.
Does it matter which way round I do this?
I've just started learning to throw and I'm trying to avoid getting into bad habits early on.
seriously, I was listening to this, but not watching it at the same time. all this talk about fingers and rims and arm movements... it sounds completely different to what it it.
I'm having a lot of trouble with this. When good throwers throw it looks like they break their arm. For instance, Alex Hill in this video (at 4:59) gets his forearm back behind his body, or at least that's what it looks like. When I hold my elbow out at my side I can't really rotate my forearm back behind my body far enough to throw a comfortable forehand, so I throw in front of my body and the disc turns over. Is there a way to work on this? Maybe its just the way this is shot...
I have a question for you. My forehand grip is different than yours. The difference is that I put my index finger pointing towards the middle of the disc instead of having it along the middle finger. Was wondering if it makes a big difference at all. I find it more stable that way. Thanks!

@m4rc24 Well you really want to try and get those fingers on the outside, but you can wait for your hands to get bigger if they will. If not def just keep working at it and eventually it will feel better.
I have that same frisbee but the grip won't work for me. My hands are too small I think. Could you make a video for alternative grips if there are any?
A lot of people focus on arm vs. wrist, but I'm more interested in fingers vs. wrist. Pulling the disc just a bit with my finger drastically increases the spin, much more than what I can achieve by wrist snapping, but this breaks down when it's raining and the disc is wet. Are you supposed to (do you?) use your fingers that much?
@brodiesmith21 I mean applying force (actively or otherwise) with the tip of your middle finger on the inner rim of the disc, kind of like 'pulling' the disc towards the left (for a righty). Thanks.
@ex0tan oh I think your talking about grip strength. When hucking a forehand I grip it and rip it. The more pressure you can create between the inner and outer rim of the disc the more rotation u can generate. For shorter throws its ok to not have such a tight grip to help improve your accuracy.
@brodiesmith21 Yea I thought I was doing it wrong, thanks for clearing it up for me. So I guess the only remedy to throwing in the rain is to grip harder then.
i just recently started playing organized ultimate and alot of the guys i am playing against have a really low release flick. how is positioning and technique different for a low release than a normal release?
@GreenWave2012 The low release flick and backhand are on my things to do list. But really you don't want to throw a low release flick or backhand unless your breaking the mark
That vertical tip starting out was something I was suprised/impressed to see. When I just started learning flicks I had trouble straightening the disc, but if you start with the disc down it got a lot easier. Good work here.
in one of your videos you told us to tighten our forehandgrip by pushing our ringfinger and pinky STRETCHT out against the outside of the disc. is this important for anything because my grip is tighter when keeping my hand like a pistol. nice vids, keep going. greets from austria

I like your videos, they help me making my moves better, because I can throw a bit :) I'm trying to go play ultimate next season (Belgium), would be really cool! But I have a question: with my forehand i put my middle finger to the inner edge and my first finger in the mid for stability because I don't like holding it the way like you do, and I learned it a bit like that (and made it my own way ofcourse). Is this wrong? I can throw far, but not over a soccer field I think.. Didn't try yet :p
@Benniee1 Ultimate in Belgium thats awesome! I really would suggest trying to get both fingers as close to the inner edge as possible. It will def help with power and accuracy after some practice.
Hey, i have another question, i kind of learned how to throw the forehand now, i can get the disc to spin but the problem is it wont go to far, when i throw it i flick my wrist and put my middle finger off the disc at the last second to give it that spin it needs, idk if thats correct but thats how i get my spin but i cant throw it to far if if i try to use more power i dont get any spin and if i do it lasts for a short period of time than just hits the ground
@TheCardsfan24 Have you watched my How to throw a forehand huck? If not take a peek at that and see if that clears it up. If you still have problems I can try and help ya. Thanks for the question!
Do you think you could do a video on how to mark, I always find it hard to put up and effective mark. especially if I am playing straight up, or "no huk"
I have no relations with Ultimate Frisbee. I never play it. I really appreciate the detail he really puts in these videos. It makes it really interesting. Good job!
I am really impressed by all of the Bro Tips so far. I've played ultimate for over 5 years and I just started coaching (a group of enthusiastic middle schoolers!). I'm really interested in seeing how this project progresses. How about footage of the most common mistakes that new recruits make while learning to throw and examples of what you do to help correct them? A side-by-side slow-mo comparison of a good vs. a bad throw would be really useful I think!
@TheCardsfan24 I'm pretty sure thats called a "Thumb Flick". If that works for you thats good, but Brodie's is the most conventional way for flicking.
Hey @brodiesmith21, how about a tip about stamina regulation and breathing techniques DURING game. I always catch breath in game, making me almost useless during D
@tedhellcaster Well i think something that will help you is not over cutting. A lot of people think to play great offense you need to be running the entire time making hard cuts when in fact its more important to make less cuts, but the right ones. Does that answer your question?
@brodiesmith21 nice tip, but not exactly what I expected (I'll take note of your 'over-cutting' advice) I was expecting more like, say a breathing pattern if I'm losing my breath due to fatigue in game.. ? or maybe a quick "meditation"? When I get very exhausted in a game, I would try to catch my breath real hard, and my heartbeat races so fast, I could barely run and maintain my position in defense play
@tedhellcaster I don't mean to be rude, but maybe your fitness levels aren't what they need to be at for the level you are playing at. I used to have that problem, but it was just because I was unfit. I'm not trying to tell you that is the reason, but perhaps it may be a factor? Please don't take this as an insult. That isn't my intention.
@ImTheMetal lol no, I know that I'm not that fit for the game yet. It's my 3rd month in playing Ultimate, and I know my cardio is not yet sufficient for this sport. That's why I'm working on my stamina now. I just heard that there's a proper breathing technique to quickly regain energy when one's exhausted in a game.
I'm actually on my way to jog before I type this comment lol
whats the benefit of keeping the disc vertical as youre coming through? i typically keep the disc flat, on the same plane as where i release it. going from vertical to flat seems like unnecessary motion to me, and can lead to wobbly discs.
@REGROSS527 Very good question. The reason I like keeping the disc vertical is for a couple different reasons. 1) It allows me to us fakes a lot faster and easier 2) I will be able to generate more spin on the disc by using towel whip method 3) If your able to throw a hammer it allows you to go straight into a hammer throw.
@REGROSS527 If you start with the disc vertical, your wrist will roll under more easily: from palm down to palm up in the throwing motion. Many throwers have their wrist rolling over, from palm facing sideways to palm down when they go for more power. More at the thinkulti blog
To catch better, when you're throwing around for fun, go ahead and whip your hand at the disc as hard as you can when you catch it. At first it will drop off your hand like it hit a brick, but you'll eventually be able to catch it. You can even do this by yourself if you have some wind to throw into. Your hands will get a lot better on hard catches quickly. The other thing is to use the palm of your hand in stead of the base of your fingers. Gives you more catching surface area.
I LOVE ULTIMATE FRISBEE I AM ONLY 11 AND I AM GETTING REALLY GOOD BOTH OF MY BROTHERS WERE TEAM CAPTAINS AND I HOPE I WILL BE A CAPTION AND A REALLY GOOD ULTIMATE PLAYER AT THAT
You think you can do a vid on some catching tips? I have trouble catching really fast discs especially when I am trying to sky. The disc always bounce off my hands.
i was taught to throw with my index finger split towards the center of the disk is this ok or is there a definitive benefit to keeping the index finger beside the middle
Got a question about the part where you say to keep your arm straight as you finish your throw...Pretty much every one of the older guys that I know playing on club teams always say to snap your arm down and finish pointing sort of like a 45 degree angle to the ground. Is there any truth to this? Or should I just finish straight armed?
nice! :D likes the part where you need to FINISH your throws. I guess the normal problem (for me) with far forehand throws (huck) is that I focus on the arm strength too much compared to the finishing of the throw. Thanks for the heads up!
One of the things I really like about both this and the backhand video, are when you encourage players to practice throws with just a limited wrist snap. Learning that solid wrist snap will make the transition to high releases, low releases, or other throwing variations much easier. I also like when Alex gets that cute little dimple when he throws in slow motion. Can you do a video on how to do that?
I think another good point to add is that with the finger that is actually contacting the disc you really want to fully line the inside of the disc with it. Don't use the side of your finger because this keeps you from really being able to utilize inside out throws. This also helps with overall touch on the disc.
Granted, I know you aren't keeping the "college womens" game in mind when making these. Quite frankly, new women's players struggle with this throw so much. This is a really great break down of the throw in an easy to understand and unintimidating way
I think it's great to emphasize fundamentals. Keep 'em coming
Could you explain why extending the last two fingers would be beneficial? I've been throwing with the last two curled like "the gun" and I've never had any trouble.
@biblicalsoultaker so, when you curl your last two fingers, you're altering the way the disc rests on your palm and in people with less flexibility, also causing your first two fingers to curl a tiny bit also. This could not affect your throw, but in many cases, it could lead to the disc coming out at a steeper angle (more outside-in). Which is the first obstacle you want to get around in learning to throw (almost everyone throws outside in blades when learning to flick)
@biblicalsoultaker Extending those last 2 fingers helps you stabilize the disc in your hand better. Gives you better control on throwing the disc not just straight, but also when you start to curve the disc. We can make another video showing why its important later if you like.
Wow, nice vid man! My forehand is my favorite throw and I noticed during your video that I never make sure to keep the bottom of my arm facing up. Definitely gonna give this a try tonight when we enter the intramural playoffs!
wow, i never realized that the flick involved so much wrist. Also keeping your arm facing up instead of rotating it over helps so much. these videos are so helpful. keep them coming!
Hey Brodie, I love your vids, you know I didnt really care much about sports till I saw your vids and it looked pretty awesome to learn. I'm kind of having a problem with getting my wrist to flick and when it does not flick, it just spins and drops to the ground and when i almost get it to flick, it turns left and smashes into the ground. hey brodie, i usually use the peace sign grip...does it make a difference?
agdude156 7 months ago
@agdude156 yes it does...if you do the peace sign grip you won't get as much power and spin
brodiesmith21 7 months ago
@agdude156 i also do the peace sign grip. but thats because i dont feel like i have as much control of the disc if u do it with the gun grip.

how do you get alot more spin on the disc? is my wrist snap not good enough? or my grip, or the way the disc rolls off my fingers?

@MisterDrizzy try to push with your fingers after you snap your wrist

austinphish 8 months ago
A lot of people focus on arm vs. wrist, but I'm more interested in fingers vs. wrist. Pulling the disc just a bit with my finger drastically increases the spin, much more than what I can achieve by wrist snapping, but this breaks down when it's raining and the disc is wet. Are you supposed to (do you?) use your fingers that much?
ex0tan 9 months ago
@ex0tan what do you mean by use your fingers?
brodiesmith21 8 months ago
@brodiesmith21 I mean applying force (actively or otherwise) with the tip of your middle finger on the inner rim of the disc, kind of like 'pulling' the disc towards the left (for a righty). Thanks.
ex0tan 8 months ago
@ex0tan oh I think your talking about grip strength. When hucking a forehand I grip it and rip it. The more pressure you can create between the inner and outer rim of the disc the more rotation u can generate. For shorter throws its ok to not have such a tight grip to help improve your accuracy.
brodiesmith21 8 months ago
@brodiesmith21 Yea I thought I was doing it wrong, thanks for clearing it up for me. So I guess the only remedy to throwing in the rain is to grip harder then.
ex0tan 8 months ago
@ex0tan yea def...its all about grip when the disc is wet

i just recently started playing organized ultimate and alot of the guys i am playing against have a really low release flick. how is positioning and technique different for a low release than a normal release?
GreenWave2012 9 months ago
@GreenWave2012 in the process of making a video for that
brodiesmith21 9 months ago
@GreenWave2012 The low release flick and backhand are on my things to do list. But really you don't want to throw a low release flick or backhand unless your breaking the mark
brodiesmith21 9 months ago
That vertical tip starting out was something I was suprised/impressed to see. When I just started learning flicks I had trouble straightening the disc, but if you start with the disc down it got a lot easier. Good work here.

in one of your videos you told us to tighten our forehandgrip by pushing our ringfinger and pinky STRETCHT out against the outside of the disc. is this important for anything because my grip is tighter when keeping my hand like a pistol. nice vids, keep going. greets from austria

@1dominikr Austria! nice! It helps to make the disc more stable and will thus make your throws more accurate. I highly recommend doing it that way.
brodiesmith21 9 months ago
I like your videos, they help me making my moves better, because I can throw a bit :) I'm trying to go play ultimate next season (Belgium), would be really cool! But I have a question: with my forehand i put my middle finger to the inner edge and my first finger in the mid for stability because I don't like holding it the way like you do, and I learned it a bit like that (and made it my own way ofcourse). Is this wrong? I can throw far, but not over a soccer field I think.. Didn't try yet :p
Benniee1 9 months ago
@Benniee1 Ultimate in Belgium thats awesome! I really would suggest trying to get both fingers as close to the inner edge as possible. It will def help with power and accuracy after some practice.
brodiesmith21 9 months ago
Hey, i have another question, i kind of learned how to throw the forehand now, i can get the disc to spin but the problem is it wont go to far, when i throw it i flick my wrist and put my middle finger off the disc at the last second to give it that spin it needs, idk if thats correct but thats how i get my spin but i cant throw it to far if if i try to use more power i dont get any spin and if i do it lasts for a short period of time than just hits the ground
Any tips? Thanks

I throw forehand by putting my thumb around the bottom edge and then putting my other 4 fingers on top
is this okay way? i find it easier and i can throw pretty well like that
TheCardsfan24 10 months ago
@TheCardsfan24 I'm pretty sure thats called a "Thumb Flick". If that works for you thats good, but Brodie's is the most conventional way for flicking.
alostmuffin 10 months ago
@TheCardsfan24 The problem with that is you cant really step out on the mark. The forehand will be a much better option.
brodiesmith21 10 months ago
Hey @brodiesmith21, how about a tip about stamina regulation and breathing techniques DURING game. I always catch breath in game, making me almost useless during D
tedhellcaster 10 months ago
@tedhellcaster Well i think something that will help you is not over cutting. A lot of people think to play great offense you need to be running the entire time making hard cuts when in fact its more important to make less cuts, but the right ones. Does that answer your question?
brodiesmith21 10 months ago
@brodiesmith21 nice tip, but not exactly what I expected (I'll take note of your 'over-cutting' advice) I was expecting more like, say a breathing pattern if I'm losing my breath due to fatigue in game.. ? or maybe a quick "meditation"? When I get very exhausted in a game, I would try to catch my breath real hard, and my heartbeat races so fast, I could barely run and maintain my position in defense play
tedhellcaster 10 months ago
@tedhellcaster I don't mean to be rude, but maybe your fitness levels aren't what they need to be at for the level you are playing at. I used to have that problem, but it was just because I was unfit. I'm not trying to tell you that is the reason, but perhaps it may be a factor? Please don't take this as an insult. That isn't my intention.
ImTheMetal 10 months ago
@ImTheMetal lol no, I know that I'm not that fit for the game yet. It's my 3rd month in playing Ultimate, and I know my cardio is not yet sufficient for this sport. That's why I'm working on my stamina now. I just heard that there's a proper breathing technique to quickly regain energy when one's exhausted in a game.
I'm actually on my way to jog before I type this comment lol
tedhellcaster 10 months ago
whats the benefit of keeping the disc vertical as youre coming through? i typically keep the disc flat, on the same plane as where i release it. going from vertical to flat seems like unnecessary motion to me, and can lead to wobbly discs.
REGROSS527 10 months ago
@REGROSS527 Very good question. The reason I like keeping the disc vertical is for a couple different reasons. 1) It allows me to us fakes a lot faster and easier 2) I will be able to generate more spin on the disc by using towel whip method 3) If your able to throw a hammer it allows you to go straight into a hammer throw.
Hope that helped!!!
brodiesmith21 10 months ago
@REGROSS527 If you start with the disc vertical, your wrist will roll under more easily: from palm down to palm up in the throwing motion. Many throwers have their wrist rolling over, from palm facing sideways to palm down when they go for more power. More at the thinkulti blog
thinkulti 10 months ago
To catch better, when you're throwing around for fun, go ahead and whip your hand at the disc as hard as you can when you catch it. At first it will drop off your hand like it hit a brick, but you'll eventually be able to catch it. You can even do this by yourself if you have some wind to throw into. Your hands will get a lot better on hard catches quickly. The other thing is to use the palm of your hand in stead of the base of your fingers. Gives you more catching surface area.

Got a question about the part where you say to keep your arm straight as you finish your throw...Pretty much every one of the older guys that I know playing on club teams always say to snap your arm down and finish pointing sort of like a 45 degree angle to the ground. Is there any truth to this? Or should I just finish straight armed?
newbiex2 11 months ago
nice! :D likes the part where you need to FINISH your throws. I guess the normal problem (for me) with far forehand throws (huck) is that I focus on the arm strength too much compared to the finishing of the throw. Thanks for the heads up!
joeltay17 11 months ago
One of the things I really like about both this and the backhand video, are when you encourage players to practice throws with just a limited wrist snap. Learning that solid wrist snap will make the transition to high releases, low releases, or other throwing variations much easier. I also like when Alex gets that cute little dimple when he throws in slow motion. Can you do a video on how to do that?
CRBrowning 11 months ago
I think another good point to add is that with the finger that is actually contacting the disc you really want to fully line the inside of the disc with it. Don't use the side of your finger because this keeps you from really being able to utilize inside out throws. This also helps with overall touch on the disc.
enjoitheworld416 11 months ago
@statebird44 Thanks and I wouldn't be opposed to making a video focusing on women's ultimate.
brodiesmith21 11 months ago
Granted, I know you aren't keeping the "college womens" game in mind when making these. Quite frankly, new women's players struggle with this throw so much. This is a really great break down of the throw in an easy to understand and unintimidating way
I think it's great to emphasize fundamentals. Keep 'em coming
statebird44 11 months ago
Could you explain why extending the last two fingers would be beneficial? I've been throwing with the last two curled like "the gun" and I've never had any trouble.
biblicalsoultaker 11 months ago
@biblicalsoultaker so, when you curl your last two fingers, you're altering the way the disc rests on your palm and in people with less flexibility, also causing your first two fingers to curl a tiny bit also. This could not affect your throw, but in many cases, it could lead to the disc coming out at a steeper angle (more outside-in). Which is the first obstacle you want to get around in learning to throw (almost everyone throws outside in blades when learning to flick)
(just my opinion though)
shahram05 11 months ago
@biblicalsoultaker Extending those last 2 fingers helps you stabilize the disc in your hand better. Gives you better control on throwing the disc not just straight, but also when you start to curve the disc. We can make another video showing why its important later if you like.
brodiesmith21 11 months ago 2
@brodiesmith21 That would be great. But I'll probably see you in Gainesville, I'm trying out for Florida A
