I know of no other recording of any music whatsoever that captures anything even remotely close to the sensitivity and beauty overlaying the tragic pathos expressed in this music. Kogan's Tchaikovsky is an incomparable and ultimate performance.
I'm impressed with this but confused a bit because there are a few CD performed by Kogan with Silvestri. In order to clarify, please let me know which orchestra this is. Alternatively, you can let me know the label of this CD.
I bought the Leonid Kogan Edition 10 CD set, and I was disappointed to see the Tchaikovsky recording /wasn't/ the Silvestri one. Now I have to go spend more money and get the Silvestri recording. >.>
I have Kogan / Silvestri recording of this Concerto complete, besides their famous recordings of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Mozart the 3rd. The great Violinist was so highly admired by the Romanian Conductor Silvestri. Before his death Kogan recorded Beethoven's with his close friend the Russian Conductor "Y. Svetlanov" so Poetic and Virtuosic indeed. Both of then recorded Scheherazade with Kogan giving an Extraordinary Violin Solo indeed. Should anyone wanna to upload any of them, let me know
I grew up listening to Kogan's version of Tchaikovsky's violin concerto when I was a kid and have yet to find anybody else's version satisfying (I'm 40 now). Heifetz was the closest that was even tolerable. Kogan definitely needs to be more recognized.
I disagree, though its all subjective, This is the best recording Ive heard of the piece. The timing and intonation is at perfection, and allot of passion was put into this. The sound was crystal clear, no place overly emphasized or adlibbed - which I like. +this is Tchaikovsky, not Brahms, so one style shouldnt necessarily be placed in another
The interpretation is different from Francescatti but near in different moments. Moreover I really prefer Kogan playing in live in russia. Poor recording but really better interpretation of the Master. You should hear how int the passage at 7:45 it's singing.Far better than in this recording. No comparison is possible. ;).
When I'll have time I'll put it on youtube and then, you'll hear ;).
Yuo should also hear Ferras in tchaikovski. I don't remember whith who it's amazing.
I like the way he handles the passage at 7:45--much like Francescatti--with some delicacy and WITHOUT losing time--an extremely virtuistic passage and test of the master's muster. He has been called a "muscular" player but here he demonstrates real delicacy and artistry--he was a well rounded player.
For once the orchestral introduction is not trivialized by too fast a tempo; it has gravitas, importance, a sense of occasion and it perfectly sets up the violin's entry. What an entry! I believe this is the best Tchaikovsky Concerto I've ever heard, surpassing Heifetz and Oistrakh's several versions. Kogan deserves more recognition. The recorded sound and balance between soloist and orchestra is also perfectly realized here; bravo, EMI!
aw like a del gesu is sub-perfection??? i have to admit, though, i always wanted to hear him play with something like isaac stern's violin or rabin's. listen to him play paganini's violin it's haunting. it's also a video on youtube; watching him is jaw-dropping. i'm not exaggerating
@calloffthedogs this is my second favourite recording of this concerto , but still the live recording from 1948 again with kogan and alexander gauk conducting the paris national symphony ochestra is unmatched .

It's not bad BUT I've heard much better interpretation. He didn't play in the style of Brahms.

try the third movement. gut wrenching! I agree with you 100%.

Kogan combines the parts I love from Oistrakhs and Heifetz's interpretations and melded them together.

this is with Silvestri isnt it? In my humble opinion, this is THE best Tchaikovsky VC ever recorded bar none.
