Beautiful and inspirational....and I believe I'm the second coming of Christ! If there's a heaven, and I ardently believe there is, Christopher Hitchens is there (we emailed each other before his passing). Why? Because more than anything else, he stood for freedom of thought and that, my athiest foes, is truly what God is all about....perfectly contrary to what you've been misled to believe.
The freethinking world has lost one of its giants, but Christopher would never settle, resign himself, or allow himself to "rest in peace" but rather take up the pen, the hermeneutic of suspicion, an open and inquisitive mind, and forge ever deeper into the trenches of ignorance - Here's to you, Hitch, and may Johnny Walker Black taste that much sweeter for us all.
@Rogersmith026 Oh, well, for a person who believes there's no life after death I don't think he'd really want to be killing himself off....too bad he doesn't see the TRUTH....
@ThatLauraPerson Are you saying he better not want to die or that he really deep down believed in hell? I'm an atheist and I attempted suicide a few times. I have had borderline personality disorder, anxiety, major depression and bipolar disorder my whole life. I was suicidal when I was younger and Christian. The prospect of an afterlife had no bearing on my fear of death. There was no conversion, or fear of hell when I tried to off myself. I won't when I really go either.
@ThatLauraPerson And you say "Oh, too bad. He didn't believe what I do, so now he lives in a fiery tortuous place my malevolent god created. Hooray for me. Boo Hitchens, enjoy hell, because since you made a fool of my superstitious ways, I glorify your death. People should die and suffer eternally for blasphemy. BUT MY GOD IS LOVING, BTW." I'd rather not worship a god who could conceive of a place called hell that you go when god hides his presence from you and calls it faith
@xxicexxx Now that there are more atheists and freethinkers in the world, such kinds of brilliance will not be dimmed forever. The movement is only just getting started. Science and reason, as long as people like us are around, will only continue to progress. Be vocal. Fight faith, wherever it starts.
"Look at those of you who tell you, those people who tell you, at your age, that you’re dead until you believe as they do—what a terrible thing to be telling to children—and that you can only live by accepting an absolute authority. Don’t think of that as a gift, think of it as a poisoned chalice; push it aside, however tempting it is. Take the risk of thinking for yourself. Much more happiness, truth, beauty and wisdom will come to you that way.”
Some of my favorite words and inspiration (slightly paraphrased): When Socrates was sentenced to death. . ., The discussion of what is good, what is beautiful noble, true, pure could always go on. . . . That’s the only conversation worth having and it’s the conversation I want to have while I’m still alive.
I want to take the risk that I don’t know anything like enough, I’m always hungry on the edge of a great harvest of future knowledge and wisdom, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I've just finished his memoir 'Hitch-22', and spent the past few hours reflecting on this man, finding that when I believe the tears to have run out, I watch something like this and they come again.
I swear to you, Christopher, that conversation you spoke of SHALL go on, even after your death... though I suspect it must now go on with slightly less light, less heat, and less eloquence.
@TheAbsurdHero Hitch was like my intellectual father to me. My father is dying of lung/liver cancer so this really hit me hard - even though I knew it was coming. So so sad. I will carry the argument forward - thats my promise.
This is still my fav Hitch clip, and that is a very tough catagory. I feel so lucky to have been alive for 29 of the same years as he was, and in the modern age of A/V recordings and the internet. Marvelous.
@pjtrain - YOU WISH. Nobody is paying tithes to atheism, Hitchens doesn't get his income tax free and Hitchens doesn't get his house tax free. Most importantly Hitchens isn't telling people they will burn in hell for not accepting his reasons for disbelieving in your fairytale god. I'm not going to argue such a retarded comparison with you past this post, if you insist on pressing the issue then I have great way of fixing the problem, although I don't like using it.
Oh, those delighted, laughing children with parasites, with starvation and malnutrition ulcers, with cancers and abusive parents and the struggle to survive! They must really love your god's sense of humor! How special they must feel to be so blessed.
If hitch doesnt make it through the cancer, this speech will be possibly be looked back on as one of his fines - with a gentle, thoughtful edge to it - not normally seen.
You know I always get goosebumps when I watch this. This might be one of the most inspiring, heart felt speeches I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. "I want to live my life taking the risk all the time that I don't know anything like enough yet, that I haven't understood enough, that I can't know enough, that I'm always hungrily operating on the margins of a potentially great harvest of future knowledge and wisdom." These are the words that everyone should live by.
I love that this debate was held at a christian academy. Every time I watch this I just see the dean and the teachers cringing in their seats. The full version of the debate closes with the dean giving a prayer, almost in an attempt of damage control it seemed.
i hope I'm not too off base to think Hitchens will not only go down in history as one of the great thinkers of the last century, but will be an inspiration in the near term to a more moral civilization.
"Christopher Hitchens, one of the most incisive voices of the last three decades, is marking the end of his ability to speak in a moving article for Vanity Fair"
The crazy thing about this bit is that he never intended or planned on saying it. Earlier, he had wanted to go to audience questions but Dembski refused and red his pre-written closing argument. The above speech is Hitchens' response....
Absolutely amazing. Some of the best few minutes of human speech ever uttered...
@turbozed - That's very interesting to know. Dembski was just asking to be Hitchslapped and boy he GOT IT. This short clip is the best summary of what it means to be an anti-theist I've yet heard.
@IlovemyGlock21 But it has nothing to to with being anti-theist, the greater bulk of it could just as was well been said by Thomas Paine or even myself!
@turbozed totally agree. The greatest thing I've ever heard anyone say in my life. Genius is an over-used phrase, but in this instance almost an understatement.
For the first few seconds I thought the music in the background would be an overly sentimental touch, but I have to admit I started getting a little misty by the end.
the way this man speeches only months away from his death, and yet so inspiring and wise and deeply touching every vain of our short existence on this lonely planet honestly brought me to tears and I am not ashamed of it. we need people like Hitchens in this world. there is no doubt in my mind about that...
I think the music is quite successful. The speech is, I would argue, as moving and as inspiring as Al Pacino's speech in Scent of a Woman. What a brilliant man.
I honestly can't put into words how inspiration and amazing this video is... Words just don't do this justice. I may not agree with Hitchens on everything, but my word what a man, what a speech, genius, and will probably never be replaced.
Thank you, Hitch. You are a Prince among men, and a true champion of reason and love. My world, and the world at large, has been immeasurable enriched by your knowledge, your wisdom and your voice. Your mentors across the ages would be proud. I wish happiness and health to you and those you hold dear.
I watch this every morning now and it never fails to put me into the mind set of learning - discovery and moving forward with new ideas. This man is a giant.
I love christopher hitchens. He is the best debater ever. always giving it to em. Using there own faith, scripture and dogmas againts the enimy is key. I love it! I wish him the best & hope that the world can world can see him the way I do. Thank goodness for christopher hitchens.
...@drjx93 I'm going with "inspiring." The sound track renders the full impact of Christopher's stunning and majestic words. It is brilliant and I thank @pmf8 for making it. Drix, I read that you converted this to an mp3. Can you please tell me how? This deserves at the very least, a daily iPod listen where ever I am. In fact, I couldn't think of a better way to begin each day of the rest of my life than with these words put to this music.
@IlovemyGlock21 ...Sorry brother, all the -- well-deserved -- credit is yours! Nicely done!!
(Perhaps you know of a way to download this to an mp3 or into iTunes? I really want to carry your version and listen often. Or, at the least, could you tell me what the title of the music is? Thanks, LMG21.)
@JeddieT - Well there is a plugin in firefox (Easy Youtube Video Downloader) that will let you convert the video to an MP3. The music is from the movie Sun Shine BTW.
@IlovemyGlock21 ...Got it! Thanks once again ILMG21, much appreciated. I'll be listening to this, any chance I get, the rest of my life.
(BTW, "Sunshine" the movie -- I should have known. . . I had already downloaded some of the music from that soundtrack previous to your creation. A very powerful sound.)
@IlovemyGlock21 Adding music to Hitchens' speech here reminds me of the guests at Douglas Adams' Restaurant at the End of the Universe, who dress up as smart as they can to 'give it a sense of occasion'.
One of the greatest minds of our time, wracked with cancer, gives one of his final bows by making a heartfelt plea to the children of this congregation, imploring them not to give in to brainwashing but to think for themselves. The monologue alone is enough to move anyone who gets it, but you did a fantastic job of capturing the moment for those of us who couldn't be there. I still cry every time I watch it. Thanks for this.
It was between Hitch and William Dembski in Plano, TX. I was there and I was amazed to finally see Hitch in person. The unfortunate thing was that Dembski proved so little of a challenge that I genuinely believe that he and his supporters did not understand how thoroughly they were trounced. One man basically came up and said "I didn't understand half of that, but my faith has never waivered in all my life." A plea for the students not to mind the scary atheist and all his reason and logic.
and you can copy the youtube link into the box. and download it. it's a relatively safe site, haven't had any problems with it yet and have been using it for months now. or you could go to keepvid(dot)com if you want the audio and the video.
Hey bro, i think you get the point actually, since you just paraphrased John 3:36. You can Believe the truth about reality, which is that God wants to forgive you, accept you, and give you access to the source of life, or you can reject him and spend eternity in isolation away from Him. It's like your in jail and someone offers you freedom, you have a choice to stay there, or accept the offer (or mock the rescuer) but Jesus doesnt just illegally break you out he pays your punishment as well,
@DonJay777 You may feel the need to be constantly forgiven. The rest of us don't. What is it like to live with a constant feeling of guilt and fear? I would really like to know.
Also, why don't you take responsibility for your own actions instead of passing the blame onto Jesus? Could it be that after scapegoating yourself like this, you still feel guilty?
We atheists have to seek forgiveness from the ppl we have wronged. Something Christians seems incapable of doing
Every time I see this, EVERY TIME, I get goose bumps. Music helps the message, but even with out it it's such a damn profound thruthful message. Thank you Hitch, you are an intellectual juggernaut, comrade.
Indeed, this video is not a broadcast, News story. It is a presentation of a prime example of a valid position - the anti-theist's position. As such, I applaud even this minor inclusion of a music-track to enhance the message -- which it does in an extremely powerful manner. Well done!
While I don't agree with him on philosophical grounds, I know of few more eloquent men alive today. And despite my disagreement with him, I deeply admire this man's courage to hold tight to his convictions even in the face of death. I hope that he overcomes this cancer and lives into old age. But, like Shakespeare, Hitchens is already immortal in his works.
The existence of God tells us exactly what Chris says he is longing for, a world where we can never understand enough, where we can't know enough, where we will grow and learn for all eternity. Christians arent saying they know "everything" but that they indeed truly know a basic truth regarding life because God in his mercy revealed them to us.
@SerraAngelDK. I don't see the analogy between God and North Korea, i heard Chris use that and now others are just repeating it. The Bible doesnt portray God as someone who forces you to do what He wants, He tells us how Laws work, especially moral and ethical Laws, and its up to us to choose to obey it. If a Science teacher tells me which laws I should know about so I don't get hurt, they are not being a north korean dictator. God tells us how to have a good life, and we have free will.
It's a very powerful closing speech, indeed - however, I have to wonder in the most mindless drivel might also sound profound when spoken over this background music...
@pmf8 - Your absolutely right because preachers and other mythologist do it all the time. I don't understand what everyone's beef is with the music. If I had dubbed a soundtrack over then entire debate then I could see your point but this is less than three minutes and it's during a part where he makes a profound plea to the hundreds of brain washed Christian students in the audience. I thought that a little background music might drive home the feeling that I got from watching it.
@erikhanson92 - It's from the sound track to the movie "Sun Shine". It was a coincidence that it matched up with the changes in tone during the speech.
@IlovemyGlock21 I think it's good mate, adds something. If anyone wants to hear it without then there's plenty of vids in the sidebar where they can. Haters will hate, don't let it get to you.
@IlovemyGlock21 Hey, I just figured I'd drop in and say I liked the music. It sets a nice tone for the powerful message he delivers. I don't understand what everyone's problem is with it. If I want to watch the debate in full I can (without the music). Now however, I have the option to watch this wonderful excerpt set to music. Good job on the vid and get well soon Hitch.
@IlovemyGlock21 Dude! I love this vid! Watch it almost every day now. The timing of the music is just inspired, when he starts on "the offer of certainty" (1:16) the music moves along as if to emphasize the the next point he is making.
Curious about your user name though. Im sure you do love your glock, only I'd expect that from some christian right redneck who would rather hate the hitch. It shows you think for yourself if nothing else;-j

...@drjx93 I'm going with "inspiring." The sound track renders the full impact of Christopher's stunning and majestic words.

@JeddieT - Pmf8 didn't make this, I did.

@IlovemyGlock21 ...Sorry brother, all the -- well-deserved -- credit is yours! Nicely done!!
(Perhaps you know of a way to download this to an mp3 or into iTunes? I really want to carry your version and listen often.)

Hitch needs no soundtrack.

@FlexibleElf - Never said he did need a soundtrack. Ice cream doesn't need chocolate syrup but it sure tastes better with it.
IlovemyGlock21 11 months ago 49
@IlovemyGlock21 Adding music to Hitchens' speech here reminds me of the guests at Douglas Adams' Restaurant at the End of the Universe, who dress up as smart as they can to 'give it a sense of occasion'.
Hitchens' words are more than enough.

Thanks for this.
cavan10 11 months ago
It was between Hitch and William Dembski in Plano, TX. I was there and I was amazed to finally see Hitch in person. The unfortunate thing was that Dembski proved so little of a challenge that I genuinely believe that he and his supporters did not understand how thoroughly they were trounced. One man basically came up and said "I didn't understand half of that, but my faith has never waivered in all my life." A plea for the students not to mind the scary atheist and all his reason and logic.

@aminrashidian Go to video2mp3(dot)net

Hey bro, i think you get the point actually, since you just paraphrased John 3:36. You can Believe the truth about reality, which is that God wants to forgive you, accept you, and give you access to the source of life, or you can reject him and spend eternity in isolation away from Him. It's like your in jail and someone offers you freedom, you have a choice to stay there, or accept the offer (or mock the rescuer) but Jesus doesnt just illegally break you out he pays your punishment as well,
DonJay777 11 months ago
@DonJay777 You may feel the need to be constantly forgiven. The rest of us don't. What is it like to live with a constant feeling of guilt and fear? I would really like to know.
Also, why don't you take responsibility for your own actions instead of passing the blame onto Jesus? Could it be that after scapegoating yourself like this, you still feel guilty?
We atheists have to seek forgiveness from the ppl we have wronged. Something Christians seems incapable of doing

such an Elegant speech, and He is so right
markcumbriauk 1 year ago
Indeed, this video is not a broadcast, News story. It is a presentation of a prime example of a valid position - the anti-theist's position. As such, I applaud even this minor inclusion of a music-track to enhance the message -- which it does in an extremely powerful manner. Well done!
nlperpave 1 year ago
While I don't agree with him on philosophical grounds, I know of few more eloquent men alive today. And despite my disagreement with him, I deeply admire this man's courage to hold tight to his convictions even in the face of death. I hope that he overcomes this cancer and lives into old age. But, like Shakespeare, Hitchens is already immortal in his works.
tylerjamessharp88 1 year ago
The existence of God tells us exactly what Chris says he is longing for, a world where we can never understand enough, where we can't know enough, where we will grow and learn for all eternity. Christians arent saying they know "everything" but that they indeed truly know a basic truth regarding life because God in his mercy revealed them to us.
DonJay777 1 year ago
@DonJay777 its not good eneugh for him nor me because of the fact and we dont like beliving in a divine dictaorship like North Korea
SerraAngelDK 1 year ago
@SerraAngelDK. I don't see the analogy between God and North Korea, i heard Chris use that and now others are just repeating it. The Bible doesnt portray God as someone who forces you to do what He wants, He tells us how Laws work, especially moral and ethical Laws, and its up to us to choose to obey it. If a Science teacher tells me which laws I should know about so I don't get hurt, they are not being a north korean dictator. God tells us how to have a good life, and we have free will.
DonJay777 1 year ago
@DonJay777 Free will? Really? You have a choice of believing or eternal damnation. I'm not sure I get your point.

It's a very powerful closing speech, indeed - however, I have to wonder in the most mindless drivel might also sound profound when spoken over this background music...
pmf8 1 year ago 3
@pmf8 - Your absolutely right because preachers and other mythologist do it all the time. I don't understand what everyone's beef is with the music. If I had dubbed a soundtrack over then entire debate then I could see your point but this is less than three minutes and it's during a part where he makes a profound plea to the hundreds of brain washed Christian students in the audience. I thought that a little background music might drive home the feeling that I got from watching it.

@IlovemyGlock21- What's the music that you put in the background? It's very fitting
erikhanson92 1 year ago
@erikhanson92 - It's from the sound track to the movie "Sun Shine". It was a coincidence that it matched up with the changes in tone during the speech.

@IlovemyGlock21 In responding you simply shift the blame upon preachers and put down christians instead of answering the question.
DonJay777 1 year ago
@IlovemyGlock21 Hey, I just figured I'd drop in and say I liked the music. It sets a nice tone for the powerful message he delivers. I don't understand what everyone's problem is with it. If I want to watch the debate in full I can (without the music). Now however, I have the option to watch this wonderful excerpt set to music. Good job on the vid and get well soon Hitch.
senortony1111 1 year ago
@IlovemyGlock21 Dude! I love this vid! Watch it almost every day now. The timing of the music is just inspired, when he starts on "the offer of certainty" (1:16) the music moves along as if to emphasize the the next point he is making.
Curious about your user name though. Im sure you do love your glock, only I'd expect that from some christian right redneck who would rather hate the hitch. It shows you think for yourself if nothing else;-j
Much respect.
