Wow, look at all the anti's posts on here! That should tell you something there. This is the first time i've heard of this travesty. If you want to do something about it, you need to ball up and fight before it's too late!
asbestos mining was once all ok, but in time it has taken affect maybe 50 years , it could also happen ,
note one thing people if you start breaking the earth it crumbles, and we will pay the price in time, you might think not now but think of the children?
*cont* however Roxby Downs was not mentioned once in this video... Roxby Downs, the town that is a mere 9km from Olympic Dam... I could go on forever picking out the faults in this video, but i'm just going to leave it at the author is incredibly ignorant and bias and anyone who watches this video, please be sure to find the facts before believing everything you see on the internet...
Yeah, our media studies class is the best! I'd like to meet the author of this video so i can give him a piece of my mind...... There is no doubt that there are some environmental and health risks concerning mining. But go to any mine, anywhere in the world and i can guarantee that it will have the same health risks. And whoever made this video obviously doesn't care too much about the health of 'innocent civilians' if he is worried about how our mine is going to hurt New Zealand however
8. The primary production of Olympic Dam mine is COPPER, not URANIUM! The uranium is extracted from the iron ore during the process of extracting the other minerals, such as gold, silver and copper.
9. Next time you should research futher and speak to some residents who have lived here since Olympic Dam first began over 21 years ago.
5. Uluru + Spooky Music = Olympic Dam???????? I don't think so!
6. The author of this video is not a local resident and has produced this video based on hearsay. He has presented only one side of the issue - failing to represent the people of the town, the history of the town and the mine - and without sufficient evidence to support his claims.
7.A good audience is one who is able to analyse the information given, identify gaps and silences and look at the issue from a number of viewpoints.
2. Photos of children shown are not referenced or are of children from Roxby.
3. Footage used is not of the mine site - much of the footage is not even near Roxby Downs/Olympic Dam. Footage of the front end loader doing excavations is of a housing development in Roxby Downs - not mining, (A student worked on this development)
4. The tailings that the author is talking about is already being treated on the surface, and has been for 20 years, without any known problems or health effects.
As a group of 13 Year 12 Media Students living in Roxby Downs (9 kms south of Olympic Dam) (some of us for 18 years), we have analysed this video. There are a number of gaps in this video, such as:
1. Roxby Downs has the highest birth rate in SA - without defects reported - the physically/mentally disabled population in Roxby is extremely low and are not necessarily born here. The author of this video has failed to include this or give any credible statistics to back up claims.
What a load of shi$ i work a olympic dam and all of this rendering fodder you have told is a lot of crap, where is the proof. You said it travels to N.Z how far up your ass are you, really come on you cant be for real.
I agree with both flipbits and and ionamack. I used to work at Olympic Dam. What Trinity expresses below is typical of what you may hear from your supervisor, radiation or ventilation personnel at OD. So my advice to Trinity is to dig deep, find out if your employer is educating you or brain washing you. How many people would stay there if the BHP Billiton told the truth?
How sad that we as humans, an intelligent and advanced mammal, cannot leave Mother Nature be, instead we are consumed and obsessed over power and greed.
Americans need to be more aware too. McCain wants to open 45 new nuclear power plants. Mining companies are trying to open uranium mines all over the US right now because of this rise in uranium demand and speculation-Colorado, AZ, NM, WY, VA, MT and more!! Call your senators and help stop this!! Urge them to come out in favor of the environment and our children and against uranium mining!!!!
To those that are ignorant maybe you will be eating your own words when you are on a hospital bed or worse watching your own child suffer. who told you it was safe? those vested interest? i live in South Australia this is my backyard. If you work there maybe your being tested for high levels of lead now, wait until they expose the real problem and see if radiation levels go up.
Trinity Bomber- Geology 2008-azopardi et c... maybe its good to speak up but if you have only agro anti feelings to add , please don't confuse that with information. if info is clear, then we can start sorting propaganda, bias distortion et c. How can wild feelings be as important as reliable health science when deciding what is the common good? sadly not all words carry the same weight
how entertaining....I work here, I have radiation checks all the time, in fact you are more likley to have a higher radiation dose, living in the mountains of switzerland that you will here, it is still well under the average for a person to deal with, some people just need education on what radiation is, it doesnt turn you green, and you would have to eat 5lbs of red dust to get sick, its sand, not radioactive dust, SAND.....blowing to new zealand, haha thats even more entertaining
The 'dust' is the tailings produced from extracting uranium from the ground. 84% of the radioactivity remains in the tailings which are sandlike hence they are placed in tailing ponds. The expansion of Olympic Dam will create such large amounts of tailings that they will also be placed above ground and covered with dirt. Radiation does occur naturally. An open pit mine will INCREASE exposure to radiation which INCREASES the risk of cancer. There is NO safe level of radiation exposure.
YES it is going to be a large mine and YES it will increase uranium extraction but..NO it will not expose the Australian or Global public any un-safe levels of radiation. There IS always background radiation and some areas in the world are 10 times higher than the accepted norm. There IS a safe level of radiation, including all types (Alpha, Beta and Gamma) that humans are exposed to. Roxby Downs is one of the lowest in the world. This is not going to change.
your a legend :) as if people belive this crap 90% of that footage isnt even from roxby/olympic dam there has not even been one birth defect here ! i live in roxby downs there full of it ,their so called pictures or defected children are from like third world countries not roxby grrr this vedio is so dumb !!
I live in N.B.,Canada and we are being targeted at the moment for uranium exploration, the government is letting them stake and claim our lands, and their is basicly nothing we can do about it. They have more rights on our land than we do,rediculous!! It is with videos like this that we are able to educate ourselves about what they are trying to do here. Our concervation council is trying to educate the public, but the governement keeps stating that there is nothing to fear about, they are wrong!
There's a reason the earth buried this stuff beneath tons of soil and rock. Play with fire and you get burned. They try to claim that nuclear energy is clean safe and green...Bull.
Once fusion takes place the waste has a half life of a million years or so. What do they do with the waste? They bury it underground in concrete containers with walls 12 feet thick. Concrete will last a couple hundred years down there and the nuclear biproduct will last up to a million... Math?
You're right it won't float off into space. Being a heavy gas radon would move about in the air near the earth's surface. Air is mix of gases already.. oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and so on, comparatively light gases. Radon is a relatively heavy gas and if added to the mix makes it toxic..
From my understanding i thought that uranium was not radio-active (therefore harmful) in its natural state... maybe im wrong? Can you confirm this with fact not opinion... interesting video!
this is not a contest for you or me to be right (or wrong)
this is a test to find reliable information affecting health of a planet on which all life as we know it depends. iys simple biology. petty personal cyber spats are silly. first what are the facts?? and what are yours in particular??? if "i am wrong" prove it, with evidence and facts..? Brace yourself..holding an opinion doesn't make it true to the facts !!!
Im just trying to say that mining may have environmental impacts and implications but there are also good things about mining. It gives us the resources to live comfortably, and it provides us with jobs. Everything we do has environmental impacts but now days mines have strict polices which significantly helps the environment
Using Uranium for energy is an old school method, in todays world their are more then enought ways to produce energy that is green, safe and will creat jobs for the people. If this stuff was safe, I would not dispute it at all, but it is so durty all around, from the moment it is extracted to the process of making energy and then the spent fuel(radioactive watse for ever) strick policies?? Atlas mine, Utha, Elliot lake Canada, Rabbit lake, Canada -they are all leaking radio active waste
In the 1940's and 1950's, American Indians from the Navajo Nation mined uranium ore from the hills around Cove for the atomic weapons program of the United States. Now the area is the location of a cluster of lung cancer and other respiratory diseases related to uranium. The US government has since had to pay reparations to the tune of millions of dollars.

The facts are correct. You offered absolutely no substance to your critique regarding statistics or facts. The point of it is that uranium is not beneficial to society in fact it is the opposite. It is extremely detrimental.
so is cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, driving, mobile phones, microwave ovens, genetically modified food, electricity, politicians and life in general.
Uranium in it's raw state is not dangerous, if it is used safely once mined. It is the waste that comes from uranium that can be dangerous if not treated properly.
You need to do your research far more throughly. Your statistics are bogus and your facts not even close to the truth. There is one major element that you didnt discuss in your arguement and that is the benefits of uranium in todays society NOT a society of 50 years ago.

There is so much wrong with this video:
1:00 is no where near olympic dam. Olympic dam is in the middle of a desert.
2:22 you do mine to extract yellow cake. You mine to extract Uranium minerals and then proccess it to turn it into yellow cake.
5:20 is not a birth defect it is known as ascites. The result of severe starvation.
None of the movies shown are from Olympic Dam.
