Well strictly speaking the Taliban didn't attack the U.S before the invasion of Afghanistan, Al Qaeda did but the Taliban tolerated their presence in Taliban controlled Afghanistan so in a way they did facilitate the attacks on the U.S. Anyway Al Qaeda attacked the U.S because they felt that Islamic culture was endangered by encroaching hedonistic U.S influence and a threat to the status quo. They also resented a U.S presence on Muslim soil particularly Saudi Arabia.
