I care for a retired harness race horse and I cannot lead her at all. Just trying to walk around with her she starts pulling, nipping and rearing. This is first horse I have ever cared for and it's pretty hard, it took about 6 months before I could pet her and she wouldn't freak, I'm still trying to get her to let me brush her, I wish I was taught how to do all this.
so what do i do if my my horse just stops, i cant get him to move foward. he is a westernaires horse so i cant really take time to train him, i have him for an hour a week , hes soo frustrating, help
@HAMSTERlover65 in my experience i would put the buckle of the chain on the bottom latch and every time he pushes you yank to say if you don't want to treat me with respect I won't treat you with respect.
:/ You should be able to lead from either side and you should be able to lead with you hand not so close to the halter... your horse should know that it can walk next to you or behind you without you having to have your hand holding so close to the halter, if that makes sense.. anyways I love your vids
chains are cruel never use chains. And those of you that say they cant control your horse then use a thin halter. If that doesn't work you really need work on your respect issues (parelli horsemanship helps). And horses are caustrophobic so your shouldn't hold them so close. allow them drift. You are in more danger up close and your horse can easily push you.
@MissHeatherAnn1 actually a horse called sammy has a chain at my stable! they've tried controllers, two lead reins and nothing works but the chain so unless you fancy being dragged a mile then it is a good idea!
leading on the left isn't tradition (directed at some people commenting) it's because every horse is trained the same. If you lead/mounted a horse from the right, u never know if he might freak out, because he's never been trained that way!
Good job on these videos Expertvillage. Though some things in some videos are a little off. But it is ok since everyone makes mistakes here and there. Beautiful horses by the way. You guys- I mean girls, are do a wonderful job explaining everything. No confusion was in these videos to me. Thank you for helping all beginners with these videos. :)
And for everyone who is leaving rude comments(not many but anway), remember we all make mistakes here and there.
Those 'things' are to keep flies away from there eyes and they are caled Fly Masks. And also they can see through it like they would without it.(i've even held one against me to see if i could see, and i did). Not trying to sound rude though. Hope this changes your point of view, if not its ok.
you dont have to have your hand so close to the horse's chin!!! WTF! thats really uncomfortable and will just make the horse fussy!! see she/he's trying to bite you. stupid. go learn about horses, retard.
I think that your horse looked rather uncomfortable during your movies. Your horse was not behaving that well either. I also think we you walked him you could have made him faster. He was kinda slacking off. Better luck next time! And hope this helps!
I dont think u should hold it so close to the chin.
I think that if u r walking a horse u should be in front and then u are leading a horse if u r beside it u r walking together not leading. and if the horse spooks it has more of a range to go but u don't have to be at the end of the rope more like and arms length apart and u still have rope to hold on to.
why always on the left? same logic as always mount on the left. its a tradition thats all. rule is if you do it on the left you should be able to do it on the right. there will come a day you may have to do somthing on the off side then the horse fre4aks because it is wrong in his mind.
a horse i know called ensign has a fly mask because he gets fly strike so if he didnt he would get bitten and it would become irritated and not very nice for the horse he also has to wear a coat all through the day to stop them biting his body he has this fly stuff that goes on his coat when he hasnt got his coat on for any reason but yet he is the most gorgeous lovely horse i have evr seen he is already owned by someone
@PrincessFamous uhhhhh... i think i lead on the insid of the arina so that why the horse if fritend can move and wont squash me on the side of the arina
@PrincessFamous It's not a matter of doing it at the same time, it's always doing it, if you lead from the left side all the time it's much better, it's not leading from both left and right sides at the same time..
@cocogirl20071 personaly i think it is a good idea to lead from both side so that your horse is comfortable with you being on both sides of their body. for example when i lunge my horse on the right rein she used to rear occasionlly and when lead her on the right she tries to duck around so that she can see me on her left. however since practicing being on both sides of her body she is more comfortable with be being on her right and left.

@kakababey Then you haven't tried everything have you? No chain should be used with a horse. Ever.

HorseLover10672 2 years ago
uh, i dont think that its possible to lead on both side at the same time unless you can split up into two people..
usually you lead on the left side of the horse, because of tradition..

I like to walk closer to the horse so I get stepped on, it feels great!
I always wrap the lead around my hand because getting dragged is alot of fun.
