  • Is it goju ryu karate?

  • @AxiTheReal Yes, it is

  • Actually, that is a good observation. They are definately too low - those kicks should be to the groin, unless of course, your opponent is a very short one!

  • I realise that i do i different style but were you kicking a cat in the face? those mai geris were very low :S

  • incredible nice haito!!!! I wish i could do it as well as you! Only thing i have to put my finger on - dont turn your head, before you strike with uraken =) Great preformance of Saifa!

  • i had to do this kata to get my purple belt its hard to get a hang of after having geki sai ichi and geki sai ni

  • i think you did a great job but i agree with the person below me, you need to stand on your leg for longer before the mae geri.

  • Ok! he's not all over the place and he's doing what he's supposed to do. The movements are like backwards "N" . His mae or kin geri is actually a bit of both because the target is the gooch (perineum) with the tip of the toes.

  • Not very good, al over the place!

  • he's zigzagging across the dojo instead of moving in a straight line, and he leaves his foot out on ouns 7 and 8 far too long. this is not the quality of kata i expect to see a shodan-ho performing. it is far too low, and i expect my sensei, upon seeing that, to have him do burpees as punishment, and hold him back from his next grading until it is honed

  • This is I.O.G.K.F Saifa. It is the ORIGINAL version of the Kata, taught by Ryu Ryu Ko to Kanyro Higaonna, and in turn to the ORIGINAL Kararte Ka of Okinawa. Take yourself into a corner and do burpees for not studying the history of your art.

  • I wouldn't say that this is the "original" as taught to Higaonna. Miyagi taught all kata slightly modified to the student. The only other person who passed down Gojuryu who learned from Higaonna was Seiko Higa. He stood with Miyagi after the Master's death. Juhatsu Kyoda also taught this kata and he learned directly from Higaonna too. I'm sure his version is "the original" too. None of them are un-original. Higa, Kyoda's and Miyagi's are all different, yet they learned from the same Master.

  • well it looked good compared to me. But I aspire to be like Melker Melkerson or better yet Astrd Lindgren.:) But anyway Rock on this was awesome.:)

  • I know this comment is a year old and you probably already know that the beginning of Saifa is done in that "zigzag" pattern. There is no linear movement there or anywhere else in Goju Ryu Kata.

  • which was my intention of statement on my original reply! I have seen Karateka perform Saifa with the 'in-line' beginning and was just trying to distance Goju Ryu from it. I really appreciate your knowledge though, especially on you earlier comment. Arigato.

  • i am in go-kan-ryu karate club, so our kata saifa has probably been changed to differ from the goju-ryu kata saifa.

  • show correct tetsui form..

mae geri after hiza, not kin geri..

maintain head control at all times..

even a slow kata must show good kime..

a big man must be well aware of muchimi..

dont fall into the big mans trap of ignoring your hips in generating your power..

    practice blindfolded..

  • Shisoshin0 is right about mae geri after hiza, not kin geri. Also, make more of a pause before the mae geri: i.e. stand on one leg for longer. This phase of the kata is usually said to be a test of balance (which is why you look diagonally away from the direction in which you're going to kick). Don't be discouraged by criticism and negative comments. Keep it up - you're doing a fine job, and you have the character to post on Youtube and expose yourself to criticism. So well done!
