yes, there is a spin, but only when he throws behind his back. if you watch carefully, you can see, that he holds the knife by the tip, unlike the "normal" way, when he holds it at the handle.

it's a quarter turn throw. You hold it on the center of gravity and your trigger finger keeps it from spinning any further after it slips off your hand. This is my favourite technique, but took me quite a while to get it right.
