  • Hey man, I installed Wine, I didn't configured anything, I installed Steam through Wine, it worked fine, after that I installed Cs 1.6, and when I try to enter Cs 1.6 it just say Preparing to launch cs 1.6.... and after that the window dissapear and that's all

    What to do!? Please!!!

  • You have no idea how much you fucking amazed me. I have all the games you demonstrated, and Portal (Wine port) takes three times longer to load. Team Fortress 2 (not a Wine port, official Steam for Mac) takes about 20x longer to load. I'm seriously considering permanently switching to Ubuntu. I'm a hobbyist programmer, too, so Linux is awesome for me.

  • @Babkockdood That was a little bit deliberate because I didn't want people watching the video to have to sit there waiting a long time for everything to load. I had already previously loaded up the games once and then exited right before I started the video. Thus, many of the pages were still in memory and didn't have to be fetched from disk. The initial launch of the games takes a little longer.

  • My problem is that when i run HL2, the screen is could, and don't run the principal screen, only play valve's intro video, and could, nothing more :(

  • @Josekok18 i have the same problem! like after the Valve intro it shows the copyright screen and pretty much crashes right there and dosen't go to the menu :(

  • how do you get steam on linux?

  • @ROBLOXisthebestparas I'm not running Steam directly on Linux -- I am running it under a program called Wine. Do a search for it and you'll find it. It's fairly straightforward to install it in most of the popular distros. Then you can basically just invoke the install through wine like this:

    wine msiexec /i SteamInstall.msi

I would highly recommend you copy the contents of the DVDs to your hard drive first -- sometimes the installer hangs if you install directly from the DVD.

  • i knoooow! i have it too but when i start it, it shows the starting thing at the bottom but then it doesent do anything! :(

  • @ROBLOXisthebestparas Visit the winehq homepage and looks at the apps database page for Steam. There is information about installing Steam there (looks like it can be done mostly via winetricks these days), and if you can't get it working then their forums are a good place to post for help.

  • the power of wine compels you, the power of wine compels you install linux!

  • One of the things I really love about Valve's games is that most of them (if not - all of them) can use OpenGL.

  • This is amazing

  • your computer is better than mine I want it :'(

  • 2:50 = OWNED

  • How did you get it working flawlessy!?! I tried everything and still can't get rid this memory bug!

The game stops while loading new map, memory usage is growing and I can't do anything - only reset.

    My comp.:

Zotac GeForce 9600GT, Celeron 2.2GHz dual-core, 1GB RAM, Ubuntu 9.04 32bit + Wine 1.1.37. I can play Flatout 2 and Call of Duty 2 fine on highest settings.

  • @QrzysztofPL I'm not sure what memory bug you're talking about -- I have upgraded Wine as new updates are released but I honestly haven't played any HL2 games in probably 8-12 months. If there is some new regression in Wine then you're probably better off posting on the winehq forums.

I also had to pass in some options to the games. Search google for the string below and look at the first hit...it's a howto I wrote long ago.

    justlinux orange box ubuntu

  • Ok. I've resolved this problem forcing DirectX 8 :) This bug is caused by specific hardware, that doesn't well support sRGB.

  • @QrzysztofPL : You could try the programm Wine-doors

    Greetings from Germany

  • Thank you - I will try :)

  • Hey uhh can this work with garrys mod as well??

  • I would expect it to work just fine. It runs all 5 games in the Orange Box just fine. I haven't tried garry's mod but they all use the same engine right? If so I assume it works but I don't know for certain.

  • garrys mod actually uses the engine from ep2/portal :D

  • hey i got a problem when i minimize things the minimize and disapear. . . how can i see that page back?

  • I have no idea what you even mean. You might want to try posting on a Linux forum or the Wine support forums. You'll have better luck there.

  • wow this is awesome. i will change to Ubuntu sooner or later. Im tired of paying for Windows-junk.

  • I was able to play Orange Box's HL2 upon right after installing, but now It wont launch from steam. I have other wine programs running.

  • Just a few important questions here ( i'm a pure noob) :

do you "emulate" it all trough wine or use something like playonlinux ?

Did you install anything else besides steam to keep this running ?

Have you ever had any driver issues/bugs ?

  • Wine stands for "Wine Is Not and Emulator" -- it's not emulated, just a different implementation but runs programs natively. I only installed Steam and passed some options to it to make it run better. If you want the browser at the beginning of a map to work you have to install IE6 via winetricks.

Never tried playonlinux but it's based on Wine, and Wine is EASY to install these days.

Sometimes a Wine update breaks things but it is rare. Check you inbox...I sent you more info.

  • I always thought Wine was WINdows Emulator.

  • haha, i was gonna saay that xD

  • You need a dual core, because I have same specs but a AMD dual core, and I can play TF2 at 1680x1050 with all settings max.

  • Valve are porting the Source engine and games to Linux.

  • are you sure?

    thats great news!

  • Yep, but I don't think they're going to announce anything officially until everything is ready.

  • I have heard these rumors since 2007 and I still haven't seen any results. I really hope they eventually do though.

  • since wen waz orange box waz on the pc

  • It was released the same time as the xbox 360 version.

  • How do I get this program?

I got ubuntu 8.10 but when I install a program it gives me errors and says theres a critical error when I try to update my system exc exc

  • I'm not sure which program you're referencing. Are you talking about how to install wine? If so, just google the string "ubuntu install wine" and the first hit has perfect instructions (I recommend following the command line instructions at the bottom; it requires 4 commands). If you're talking about the Orange Box then, well uh...you buy it.

FYI most programs in Ubuntu (and other Debian-based distros) are installed by using apt (command line) or synaptic (GUI).

  • Yes, but my PC crashed and I am unable to install new programs. It says a critical error has occurred and gives me lots of details. I am also unable to update ubuntu (like patches, ye know). I really need help, If I don't get it to work then I might haft to burn a ubuntu disc and re-install!

  • There are forums where you can post errors and have discussion like this -- youtube probably isn't the appropriate place, no? I think you might be better of posting the errors on one of the following forums: ubuntu forums, justlinux, or linuxnewbies. Google for them and you'll find them.

  • Thank you, Im going to try to dual-boot windows XP and use CHKdsk or something like that, thats what I had to do last time =). Nice vid,5 stars

  • Im personally a windows guy but linux is just a lot of fun to use. and its open source so its awsome

  • In TF2 I love putting a Zapper on something while someones working on it xD

  • haha, quadruple boot? Dear god man, i love it. Iv just decided to move to the 8.1 release, im hoping i dont get any issues with it. Seems like every time i upgrade there is some new driver issue. So how do you like compiz?

  • Compiz is fine I guess. I don't use any of the advanced effects. The only thing I think is helpful is a transparent terminal window so I can put it on top of a webpage and see commands that I need to type through the terminal window instead of having to switch back and forth. I don't use much else.

  • Yea, I think its more of a gimmick to attract people to ubuntu and gain some popularity. Which i am all for, its about time a decent OS crawled its way onto the scene.

  • y dont u js play them on windows...do like a dual boot or something.

  • My system quadruple boots already (Windows XP, Fedora 9, Ubuntu 8.04, and Slackware 12.1). Yes, I can reboot and play in Windows but why do that if I can save myself the time of 2 reboots (once to get into Windows and then another to get back to Ubuntu)?? My system runs Ubuntu 99% of the time so rebooting into Windows is just an inconvenience.

  • Do you find Ubuntu better than Windows XP gaming? =)

  • Playing games on Linux is really just about convenience for me (not having to reboot into Windows). In general, since most games are made for Windows only, it takes a large amount of configuration just to get it working in Linux. Often times it then takes a decent amount of tweaking to get reasonable performance. So gaming in Windows is probably "better" in the sense that the installation is easier and the performance is much better.

  • can i have link for hte Download?

  • The download to what?

  • for wine and steam. i'm new to Ubuntu...

  • Lots of info in your inbox. Go check it out.

  • ok thanks! i did and it said failed attemted 'dkgb --configure a' what do i do? HELP ME eff4eye!

  • I'm not sure what you're even trying to accomplish by giving the dpkg command the option --configure a. You should join a Linux forum and post your questions there...youtube isn't the appropriate place to be diagnosing these types of issues. Just FYI, dkgb (as you typed) is not a valid command, though dpkg is...

  • sry i'm 11 and i SUCK at commands and stuff. i just wannted my PC to work so i can kill some morons on DOD and CSS! GOD!!!!!!!! lol i'm mad as you see!

  • Is this directx9 or 8?

  • This is DirectX 8.1 (see info on right side...I'm using the -dxlevel 81 option), because initially 9.0 was like 1 FPS...really choppy. I do have 9.0c installed under Wine now and while the dxdiag.exe runs all of the tests fine, TF2 doesn't quite draw everything properly. :(

  • so, like when you double click you type in -dxlevel 81 in right. What about the -heapsize option? do I have to type in anything else for that or just -heapsize?

  • On the Steam "Games" panel just click on the game and click "properties". You will be able to set the advanced options there. You have to specify the size of the heap that you want. I had 2GB of RAM (now I have 4) but I set my heap to 1GB like this:

    -heapsize 1048576 -dxlevel 81

If you only have 1GB of RAM you shouldn't go higher than 512MB so that would be set like so:

    -heapsize 524288 -dxlevel 81

  • i have about the same specs that u do except i have an 8400gs. on windows i get about 150 fps maxed. but on linux using wine i get only 14-30 fps. can u help?

  • I find it rather amazing that Wine can translate

Direct3D API calls to OpenGL with such good performance.

  • Which version of Wine is this?

It runs really well. Although since like Wine 0.9.35; Source games run pretty well with little or no tweaking.

  • 0.9.59...It's in the info on the top right of the page. ;)

I have since upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and I am also currently using Wine 1.0. Also, my 7600GT started going out on me so I replaced it with an 8800GT with 1GB of RAM. It runs even better now with the 8800.

  • Oh, sorry I didn't notice that.

Last time I had Ubuntu installed I was running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and Wine 1.1.2.

I keep up with the latest Wine version, usually,

because it gets better with each release; even if there are some bugs or regressions.

  • dude for mine to do what you just did on your computer would take at leats 7 minutes lol

  • what's the advantage of gaming in linux and not in windows?

  • Generally, there is no advantage. There is only convenience because I don't usually run Windows. However, most games (besides a few) are designed specifically for Windows, which means that they are hard to get working and/or don't run well on Linux. However, since I was able to get this running well on Linux, it saves me from having to reboot into Windows (which I try to do as little as possible).

  • That's running damn well for a system with those specs

  • Lol im the 1234 viewer, Can i get a cake now?

  • I have ubuntu, too, and tryed the portal demo, it works but the corssfade is just a black box so its a little more difficult to point something, did you had the same problem?

  • I didn't have any problems with black boxes. By crossfade I assume you mean crosshairs? I am running the full game and not the demo so that perhaps that is the difference. Or you may have a different option turned on that I don't. Also, you could try launching the game with the -dxlevel option to change it from DirectX 9 to DirectX 8.1 to see if that helps.

  • Yeah I meand crosshairs soory ;)

Did you use DirectX 8.1? I tried to install it but I can't change it form 9 to 8.1 o0

  • You don't need to install DirectX 8.1 at all, you just need to pass Steam the -dxlevel option when the game is launched. I assume the demo can be launched in the same way. My game works with DirectX 9 (the default) it's just choppy. I'll PM you with more details.

  • my comp says that i need pixel shader 1.1 but my hardwere isnt advansed enough. will it work if i install Ubuntu on it?

  • I wouldn't think so. The pixelshader (PS) is in hardware (specifically your graphics card). Hardware can be emulated in software but it generally runs MUCH slower so it probably wouldn't be fast enough to be acceptable for gaming. You will likely need to upgrade your graphics card. According to wikipedia, PS 1.1 is required for DirectX 8.0. If your graphics card is that old, I would expect your CPU and RAM are as well. You likely need a new computer if you wish to be gaming..??

  • dam you hp!!! dam you!!!!!!!!

  • and no my ram and cpu aren't that old just that my pc didnt come with a good graphics card. i had to buy a good one seperatly but back then not many games needed that.(2003)

  • 8800gt 256, i saw one on newegg for 69.99. although 3650 is cheaper, and both are dx10 :P

  • Steam works fine but when I try to run a game it craps out. Any advice?

  • Not sure what you mean by crap out. My game didn't run very well launching from the steam window so I had to override the DirectX level and the size of the heap by passing in some extra options to the launch command. I'll PM you.

  • im scared

  • Not unless you tell it to. The installation for Ubuntu is actually very simple, and if you already have Windows installed, it will detect it. Normally, a Windows install will use the entire hard drive. The Ubuntu installer should let you choose to shrink the size that Windows gets, and it will install Ubuntu on the remaining space. I would still highly recommend backing up your data from your Windows drive FIRST if you have never messed with installations before. I'll PM you with more info.
