  • Absolutely beautiful, love the Piano and especially the Shakuhachi.

Not too fond of the electric guitar piece though, i didn't feel it fit in very well.

  • Absolutely beautiful!

  • What kind of music is this??

    Like smooth jazz or something?

  • @FcK2420 New Age Jazz. It is a form of Jazz that has a lot of Classical influence.

  • I love this song.. I listen to it every day when I want a brief escape from work....it spiritual!

  • I expected a standing ovation

  • I've known Keikos music for 20 years and nothing moves me more to this day... I've had the honor of seeing her perform four times this year and treated to a show at House Of Blues in Anaheim where she performed her style of Christmas music. My favorite rendition of this (my favorite) is with the alto sax and acoustic guitar.. Her music moves me to tears....

  • no words can describe this..... this is not just music... it is magical... a truly spiritual experience.... if you allow yourself to be transported, then this is the catalyst that will take you "there".... amazing Ms. Matsui

  • @curlscot You are so absolutely right... Very well said.. Love this talented woman.. Beautiful is what she is ...Good comment ..

  • Yall know yall bad!!!! Go Keiko and Kazu, I love you both. The Lord has blessed us in blessing you. All Praises!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • mUSIC FROM HEAVEN....

  • there's a section which keeps repeating - it sounds similar to an Azerbaijani song about TAR, music instrument. oku tar oku tar, seni kim unudar. She is performing tonight in a Baku (Azerbaijan) music hall. I see that many of her pieces sound similar to Azeri music. We had Vagif Mustafazade - Azeri master jazz-fusion who won world jazz competitions. He passed away but now his daughter Aziza Mustafazade continues his legacy in US. Google them up. I wanted to say that I like a lot Keiko Matsui.

  • i heard this song when couchsurfing in new zealand. my friend logan played the shachuhachi with so much talent. i really want to get one! does anyone know of a website where i can buy a cheap one to start with?

  • wasnt feeling the guitar solo but this song is still BOSS!!

  • That guy shredded that guitar

  • I love the flute that Kazu is playing. I had the privilege of meeting both of them in 2004 at a concert.

  • Entrancing.....captivating.....magnificent.

  • very beautiful flow - touching of the soul - thank you for this earthly experience during my journey

  • After discovering Keikos music back in 1995 with the release of Sapphire I have taken every opportunity to catch her performances. A show at Yoshies in 2006 was the most memorable as I wed my wife later that December. Light Above The Trees became our song and never fails to bring a tear and heart felt memories.

  • A very impressive in-the-moment piece. Very nice...

  • Kazu Matsui....best Shakuhachi player i've heard

  • If there's a better Shakuhachi player than Kazu Matsui, I have yet to here it.....so beautiful

  • @Brianrenshai Only one. If anyone knows where to find it, please tell me. I guess it's out of print. Masakazu Yoshizawa. I guess I can be satisfied with this, though, LOL.

  • is this a "root shakuhachi" and in which key

  • I hope to see Keiko Matsui whenever I go on a music tour of Japan! :)

  • this is real music

  • So much soul in this music!

  • She always takes me to a far away yet familiar place in my heart.

  • cette musique est si triste, elle nous transporte au porte de l'oublie et on se sents si paisible, isolé, protéger de tous. On fait le vide.

  • U tube new design is a complete waste of time. I see no value added for the user experience. We need to old version and its feature back.

  • rating 420 8D

  • My favorite song

  • Beautiful...

    Thankyou!

  • Impressive and inspiring fusion. No flute can top the shakuhachi !

  • @Nachtuil36 i remember when my Japanese grandpa played it for me. pure brilliance.

  • @Nachtuil36 totally agree with you but give a try for turkish ney it is very similar

  • @Nachtuil36 totally agree with you but give a try for turkish ney it is very similar

  • @ocakdeniz The Turkish ney is among my favourites too. Several of my friends play it :-) I rank it among the top!

  • Excellent performer. Also, what a place to spend the evening! Beautiful stage and you get to sit on a table! How classy!

  • c'est magnifique ....

  • Yes!!

  • thank you!

  • Kazu & Keiko Sound Even Better in Concert ....Live !! Great Song & Post Such a Beautiful Song when Driving up the Coast with top Down ...Relaxing Feeling !!

  • The song is very dreamlike, Keiko is incedibly talented--but Who is the shakuhachi player? I want to buy of whole CD of just him playing.

  • Kazu Matsui, her husband

  • this is very very impressive performance. . .almost bring teas to my eyes

  • this is MOST excellent

  • Que hermosa composición, aunado aun maravilloso talento en la interpretación

  • sakuhachi is a really amazing organ

    omg :D

  • shakuhachi is the flute, not the organ

  • by organ i meant music organ...

  • Keiko Matsui (Kazu's wife) in this video is playing a piano, not an organ..

  • Shaku = Inches, Hachi = Eight..

"8 Inch" This is the measure of the bamboo flute !

  • @MMACyborg

That makes no sense, pal. Does that look like 8 inches to you? o.O

Shaku is closer to a foot. One shaku and eight is roughly the meaning.

  • Yes, you right !

    Infact it's from: "isshaku hachi"

    (one shaku and 8 sun)

    (about 54 cm)

  • SIMPLY SOOTHING

  • Really beautiful...

  • what a master i feel his passion thru the music thank you calmingwind

  • Oh and btw I met her also in Ohio.

  • this whole song is like a prayer!

  • I bet she don't remember you.

  • Hosey10x2 we'd have to wrestle over that #1 fan spot. I really feel sorry for people who think they appreciate music but haven't heard of Keiko or this song yet. Awsome performance and talent.

  • i want this song played at my funeral. had the opportunity to meet keiko. #1 fan.

  • Kazu Matsui is the king of the shakuhachi!

This husband and wife duo is awesome. Have all their music!

  • Very beautiful music!

  • gorgeous!

  • jammin guitar solo! badass!

  • Отлично передали образ в музыке, не просто набор звуков.

  • Heavenly !

    thank you !

  • That was absolutely amazing. I just got my shakuhachi and can barely get a sound from it. But then I have no talent in music ^_^ BUT I shall continue to practice. Its always been something I've want to learn.

I wonder where I could go to see something like this performed in the UK... Note I'm poor. >_>

  • @Lostfaith1980: Check out the expertvillage channel for some hints and techniques. And keep practicing. BTW, what kind of shak are you using? Root end? An ABS Yuu? Or maybe something else?

  • Beautiful! thank you.

  • "Japanese Bamboo Flute'?! Try, "Shakuhachi Flute". Do your research.

  • Nerd-alert.

Should be the button besides spam

  • Unbelievable. No other music has had this lifting of spirit in me.

  • Excellent ! I have her CD, but I like this live version the best. This song and Keiko's performance , and great band are in a class all by themselves !

  • I was looking for this music for years! I've seen a TV show and absolutely adore Mr. Kazu and the way he plays the bamboo flute (i was a flute player my self but classic one). I was starting to beliave that I did dream of it as in my country i just cant find anything of them. Magnificent. I've never forgot the main tune either!

  • Impressionism at its' best.

  • That was an Awesome guitar solo.

  • Keiko was quoted to say "Music is a stairway to the heavens," she is right, and I'm ascending them now!

  • I'm sure many people have said that.

  • They are all truly wonderful musicians! Keiko's husband (Kazu) is playing a "Japanese Bamboo Flute", and he plays it equisitely!!!!!!!!

  • She is my favorite artist! She is truly magnificent on the piano, and her husband is wonderful on the horn.

  • This song makes me feel like i am alone in a large rainforest. Keiko, your music transports us to a whole new world! your magnificint!!!!

  • Hearing this music reminded me why music crosses all bridges.

  • airily magnificent!

  • piękne, aż dech zapiera! :)

  • Sugoi!!! jejeje xD, me encanta esta musica

  • Hauntingly beautiful! ~cg5

  • simplemente bello ,wonderfull.

  • Kazu and Keiko Matsui make beautiful music together. Kazu has such a relaxed and pleasant style; very refreshing. . Keiko is so versatile. What a team. What a great sound. Thank You!

  • Just got back from her concert tonight. She played this song. My wife and I are crazy about her music. The turnout was light so we got to stay for the second set gratis. Go and see her live concerts if you get a chance!

  • were you in Jazz Alley, Seattle?

Do you remember who played the melody part? There was no shakuhachi there. Was it the piano or sax?

  • The melody was played by the sax. The shakuhachi works much better for this song IMO. Yes, it was at Jazz Alley. It was the third time I have seen her there. Overall, it was a great show. The crowd was a bit smaller than I would expect but she got standing ovations.

  • all i can say is... wow. who's the guy on the guitar? he really threw down some intense riffs...

  • Pretty :'D This is the kind of husband I'd want xD

  • Oh my gosh!!!! Speechless... that is just beautiful. I know Keiko is the very talented gal on the piano. I never knew anything about Keiko Matsui before finding this video, but I am glad to have found it now. But, who can tell me something about this guy on the shakuhachi? He is a very talented gent as well and plays flawlessly. What a great ensemble! Thanks for sharing this beautiful piece.

  • The guy on the shakuhachi is Keiko's husband Kazu Matsui. He has a few albums of his own available on iTunes and Amazon.

  • Thank you. I appreciate knowing that! ;)

  • Exemplary of a full spectrum genre; But masterfully executed in this moving expressive compilation! ... WOW!

  • very amazing....thanks for sharing!

    I love this song!!

  • Keiko is my girl....love it!!!

  • Blue Note always gets QUALITY.

  • Oh wow, this is beautiful, it really paints a picture.

  • This is absolutely beautiful. I recently bought a Shakuhachi, and I can only hope to play this well one day. I watch it every day when I get into work...

  • i wish i had one:(

  • if yall like Matsui, u should check out a group called Thievery Corporation. They take influences from around the world too. I would luv to see them do a a song with Keiko. It would be bangin.

  • lovely im from Guatemala n i really love jazz n j music, but this was a delightfull fusion of both, i've never heard something like that bfore =)

  • this's a proof how shakuhachi and jazz-piano fits well!

  • I could call this music "zen-jazz"... absolutely divine!

  • Incredible song, I never get tired of watching this one.

  • スバラシス!!

  • She is coming to Seattle's jazz Alley in May! Yea! I may not go to all 6 shows but I won't put that in writing. I have seen many live performances of artists that don't quite live up to the recorded music. This is not the case with her concerts. She is very demure and quiet on stage but the music speaks for itself.

  • i'm in seoul now but i used to live in seattle in 2007. i love dimitriou's jazz alley. the venue is perfect for an artist like her. i saw her there in 2007 and it was hands-down the best concert ive ever been to. i'm so envious that you'll be seeing her there this May. enjoy!

  • I was there in 2007 as well. She actually had 2 concerts in 2007 and I went to both. One was in the winter and one in August. I will try to attend at least 2 sessions this May. Sometimes they will let you stay for the 2nd session for either no charge or 1/2 charge.

  • if she's touring this year does that mean she's releasing a new album? i hope so-- its been 2 years since her last and i think she usually releases one almost every year.

  • dude. if i was there i'd probably go into tear mode haha.

  • Ha..."oh, no...i just have something in my eye!". Dude, i'm getting good! Making some serious progress!!!

  • wow

  • whenever i have a bad day, i watch this , and my day is better

  • Kazu is her husband. Light Above the Trees was one of the best tracks (IMHO) from "A Drop of Water" - Keiko's first studio album which was recorded on their honeymoon. Brandon Fields and Grant Geisman added nice solos that blended very well with Keiko's keyboards.

Keiko later released a solo piano version of this composition on her "Dreamwalk" album.

Both versions are excellent and have stood the test of time.

  • the shakuhachi player is Kazu Matsui, maybe her brother

  • Matsui Keiko... but who's the guy with the flute? where's his credit lol

  • more than words!! more then a music !!

i don't know what it is

    but i must cry

i feel in my heart something warm & reassuring

    i love it ♥

  • swords and soul

    light and shade

    tree with wind

    butterfly free

    gone with wind... =)

  • Ancient soul,

    ancient heart,

    come with me

    fly with me...

    Thanks. :)

  • Hauntingly beautiful. The sound of that Shakuhachi just soothes the soul. . .

  • did they come out on cd?

  • My god how I like the sound of shakuhachi.. you don't need far away heavens when listening to this .. you are in heaven itself !

  • Arigato! Very nice!
