@guitarfreak23397 it's not that hard really, i can re-write what i listen (sometimes i can play it too) and then it's easy to calculate the speed. yngwie's best is 18.6 and lane is around there. remember, when you hear a run played with alternate picking (malmsteen) it will always SOUND faster than legato or any other technique but it won't always be.
petrucci is my favorite but i think the best ever is Gutrie Govan cause he is able to control the guitar like no one else.. a lot of techniques and cool stuff..

Petrucci, Vai, Malmsteem, Gilbert, even Buckethead are all awesome technical guitarists....but there is a reason why they are known for their name and not their bands. Because their songs suck...with the exception of a few gems here and there.
nothing against shredders , but a lot of them sound a like. shredding is good but the music has to come from your heart and flow threw your fingers . Not just your fingers shredding out scales as fast as you can , is really not for me.
If it comes down to "fastest", Cooley is untouchable. But Malmsteen is the one who makes me REALLY want to play guitar (I do play, just not as well as Yngwie :p)

Yeah...Buckethead actually makes his shredding sound good. His tone is great, combinations are good, and his music is fukin phenomenal. He's, in my opinion, best guitarist to live. Him and Shawn Lane. I don't listen to Shawn Lane, I'm not much into his music, but I admire his awesome skills. Paul Gilbert has a real good tone too. I don't really like malmsteen, but respect him because he's one of Buckethead's influences. The rest I don't really care for. MAB is good, but his music is shit..
Shawn lane and buckethead are faster than paul gilbert, Yngwie, Chris Impellitterri, Michaelangelo batio, however if you start counting tapping there will be plenty more who are faster than all these guys as well. I just don't know why all these lists fail to mention John Mclaughlin who happens to be the only one close to Shawn Lane in terms of speed.

Many like Jeff Loomis, Jason Becker, and there was this kid ( totally forgotten ) who was playing with vai at 10, who have been prodigies but they never reached the peak. The absolute peak in my opinion would be Shawn Lane, brilliant composition and fastest guitarist using alternate picking ( no tremlo picking ) till date.

Perhaps I underestimated him because I only saw one of his videos, but still in the long run Shawn Lane was technically magnificent and perhaps if that kid is that good he'll reach that level but still he has long way to go before he gets there, composition matters my friend, hopefully the kid won't stop progressing, but he's still not there.
This list is not correct in any way... Speed is not an opinion... either someone is faster than another player, or they are not... Just saying.

Yeah...Buckethead actually makes his shredding sound good. His tone is great, combinations are good, and his music is fukin phenomenal. He's, in my opinion, best guitarist to live. Him and Shawn Lane. I don't listen to Shawn Lane, I'm not much into his music, but I admire his awesome skills. Paul Gilbert has a real good tone too. I don't really like malmsteen, but respect him because he's one of Buckethead's influences. The rest I don't really care for. MAB is good, but his music is shit..

Shawn lane and buckethead are faster than paul gilbert, Yngwie, Chris Impellitterri, Michaelangelo batio, however if you start counting tapping there will be plenty more who are faster than all these guys as well. I just don't know why all these lists fail to mention John Mclaughlin who happens to be the only one close to Shawn Lane in terms of speed.

@osamierda That kid is good doesn't mean everyone else has to be losers. That kid still has a long way to go.He's not even close to being the fastest. Many like Jeff Loomis, Jason Becker, and there was this kid ( totally forgotten ) who was playing with vai at 10, who have been prodigies but they never reached the peak. The absolute peak in my opinion would be Shawn Lane, brilliant composition and fastest guitarist using alternate picking ( no tremlo picking ) till date.

@osamierda I didn't say he's not good, I said he has a long way to go. Perhaps I underestimated him because I only saw one of his videos, but still in the long run Shawn Lane was technically magnificent and perhaps if that kid is that good he'll reach that level but still he has long way to go before he gets there, composition matters my friend, hopefully the kid won't stop progressing, but he's still not there.
