gonkiluagon: Actually he DIDN'T compose the song, he only wrote the lyrics! It is a traditional EFIK song from NIGERIA. During his involvement in slavery, he heard the captured slaves singing the song in our native language. When he renounced slavery and became a Christian, he wrote the words to the NATIVE TUNE, and then started his anti-slavery campaign, but it is a TRADITIONAL EFIK SONG, with Anglicized. lyrics

This version is by Chris Tomlin. He added in the "My chains are gone..." part. He also brought back one of the original verses often left out in this hymn - "The earth shall soon dissolve like snow...". Yeah, great song!
