  • This video has the best ending on Youtube.

  • @toneshards Which L.s.o is overrated? The L.s.o that exists now or the L.s.o that existed then? He didnt say that they didnt play accurately-he said that they were unable to achieve perfection in the time given them. For the L.s.o playing chamber music-75percent is "accurate":Or is this a joke that's too clever for Me? Are You joking?

  • Look at franks shoes, these were the same he wore in the next letterman appearance!

  • once a month or once a week WHAT?! i'll never know :(

  • One might not like America or one might even hate it. But America has had men like Frank Zappa so it will remain the greatest country in history.

  • @azzy314159 there needs to be an equivalent of Godwin's law for Youtube comments.

As more Youtube comments get put up, the probability of someone touting the superiority of one country to another, or one generation to another, or one genre to another, approaches one.

  • @jackhorkheimer How could my statement be equated to a reference to eugenics. I did not specifically claim that America was in that sense superior. I meant that - so long as- America has such men, it will remain the greatest... etc. etc. I was merely eulogising the the greatness of men like him.

  • @azzy314159 what, I never equated your statement to eugenics. I said there needs to be another law similar to Godwin's law. Godwin's law has nothing to do with eugenics anyways.

I'm just chagrinned that people seem to always turn the comments section into something divisive--one country vs. another, one generation vs. another. Why not just appreciate the video instead of turning it into an argument about something else.

  • @jackhorkheimer ...or one comment vs. another. You do realize you're doing the exact same thing?

  • @Sunderlanding "exact same thing" is a bit of an exaggeration, don't you think? There's a difference between someone bringing an argument of the superiority of one country out of nowhere and someone critiquing that.

There is some hypocrisy in me arguing for an ideal I haven't fully attained, hoping for better, but I don't think I was being divisive. I don't think azzy was trying to be either tho. What would you do, besides believe something different or be quiet?

  • @jackhorkheimer I just think the comment boxes are there for people to say what they want. If that ends up being a vs b so what? It is true that this also includes your comment vs comment argument, but I can't help feeling you were comming accross as if you thought you were superior when you were basically doing the same thing.

  • @azzy314159 homo

  • @turtles12 Yes! but the creativity?

  • @azzy314159 being gay is not considered creative, sorry

  • @turtles12 Don't tell that to anyone on Broadway.

  • I think it tells a lot about Zappa that TV hosts would have him on just to chat.

  • Quickly, go on commercials! There appears to be somekind of furry animal sitting on top of Letterman's head!

  • Franks talk show idea from 1968 is basically the same format Bill Maher used for Politically Incorrect and is now using for Real Time. Bill Maher isn't bad, but wouldn't it have been great to have Frank doing that show!

  • Those suits have been kissing ass... Did nobody else get the joke?

  • Oh, the days when you could smoke on live t.v.

  • great ending!

  • "State of the art stuff"

  • The album was released on June 9th, 1983, so this interview is probably from around then.

  • Amazing friggin man

  • Shoot that fuckin thing off of Dave's head.

  • "I have a personal relationship with my fans where I don't mess around". Truth.

  • brown lipstick -> from kissing ass

  • 1080p or gtfo

  • post the rest, you idiot! dog breath was playing!!

  • there will never be another Frank. I miss your bravado in this sterile generic government controlled days. I miss people speaking their mind articulately. all the books we read in school have come true. they weren't guidebooks for how to do it, but rather to make your realize it was wrong. my generation is worthless intentionally.

    i miss you frank!

  • His idea for a talk show sounds suspicously JUST like BOTH of Bill Maher's shows...

  • Zappa was a genius like this world may never see again...

  • NOW I remember why I watched Letterman 30 years ago...before he became bitter and insignificant...

  • i didnt know bill cosby played guitar for letterman O.O

  • Interview: June 16th, 1983

  • So he wanted to do what Bill Maher did 1-2 decades later.

  • The man was a genius,what a brain!

  • Letterman: What kind of people were on the list?

Zappa: I don't know, but they didn't like the list.

Zappa is truly missed, if I could go back in time, I'd go to May 8,1974 Edinboro Gymnasium Extravaganza. I live south of there and I swear I can feel his vibe on route 422, I know he played in Johnstown, Penn State Main, Gannon, and Edinboro, and of course THE BURGH! It's nice to know that at one time Frank was HERE in Western Pennsylvania!

  • @MrMyfmyf yeah he played the syria mosque too, i think thats on 422 or 286. i was from indiaana born an raosed, moved to mt washington burgh style. zappa rocks. project object plays in burgh alot, saw zappa plays zappa here too

  • "i have a personal relationship with my fans where i don`t mess around", when musicians loved their fans and appreciated them instead of just goin to the bank

  • I want MOAR!!!!!

  • i saw this show and went out and bought the damn album a few days later. album kicked my ass and immediately realized that it was too much for me to understand...kent nagano, an orchestra and saran wrap being scrunched in time....

i still have a hard time listening to it. it's all about the textures.

  • "i have a relationship with my fans, they know i don't mess around"....nuff said.

  • Vol 1 of the London Symphony Orchestra was released in 1983; Vol 2 followed in 1987.

  • Nice ending! :)

  • He was always ahead of pack with technology...its cool to hear him talking about digital recording way back then

  • The last 3 seconds of this clip are terrifying.

  • 6:43 REMIX!!!!!!

  • What a style this man had. Look how ridiculous Letterman looked. But Frankie would fit perfect in any time. People these days couldn't dress better.

Just a timeless (or maybe centuries ahead?) genius!

  • Zappa Vol. 1 was 1983, so.......

  • this kind of integrity died a long time ago...

    "hey its full of mistakes"

    brave bold man.

  • Haha he was calling Dave out on his ass kissing, pretty funny.

  • Zappa's show sounds like politically incorrect

  • @Krl246 EXACTLY MY THOUGHTS! I WANT TO HEAR CONFIRMATION FROM MAHER!

  • uh no one is better than frank

  • "Brown lipstick in the corporate suite". hahaha!

  • "Brown lipstick in the corporate suite." This man was pure genius. Eat it, Letterman.

  • @TheRealDerfMan This must be a Zappa-ism. I have no idea what this refers to.

  • @restlessr84 ...well first, the corporate suite: anything linked to "the corporatocracy". which the TV-world, being owned by a handful of people, can be seen as part of "the corporate suite". Brown lipstick is what you get when you're kissing ass. So, Zappa wanted to talk about "brown lipstick in the corporate suite", and if you notice between 1:30 to 1:45, he accuses Letterman of taking part in this activity, which he dismisses by saying the cards help "keep that from happening." Hilarious! =)

  • @TheRealDerfMan thank you very much for the clarificaion. :) While I didn't alwaysagree wtih Zappa, he was one of the few musical entertainers who had good, thought-provoking political insights. And, of course, a very funny guy.

  • @restlessr84 Glad I could help! I feel the same way about Zappa. There's a few things he said I might not totally agree with, but when he says something, he's given it some thought and it always comes out right. For one, I'm a pot-smoker, and don't like cigarettes. He likes coffee, I prefer tea. ;) But in general, I agree with Zappa's way of thinking. Love the way he pokes fun at many things worth poking fun at. Plastic People, Bobby Brown, Flower Punk, Disco Boy, great stuff everywhere. Cheers!

  • A talk show hosted by Zappa... Woahh, it would have been the greatest thing since the big bang! Miss you Frank!!

  • Love letterman and love Zappa!

  • i love how it fuzzes out to dog breath! xD

  • My first concert and one I will never forget...Zappa at Mac Court, Eugene, Oregon. Privileged to have seen him.

  • you wont see anyone smokinga cigarette on letterman these days.

  • i miss the 80's

  • Weird how he holds up a record today you see like a microchip. RIP Frank (:

  • 2010 : London asshole orchestra how do you get to play zappa, you respect him and pay his estate, and you rehearse you mother fuckers

  • As unusual as Zappa's music is, along with his irreverence, it's so refreshing to see an artist with such integrity & respect towards his fans to be so open & honest.

  • London symphony is cheaper of London philharmonic ....!?

  • Zappa comes up with "Politically Incorrect" in 1968! Take that Bill Maher! (minute 5:15)

  • hahaha. i find it amusing to see how much Letterman's stage has grown over the years.

  • brown lipstick smells like shit

  • You pay them.

    Hahaha

  • Walks past the no smoking sign with cig and ashtray, sits down, and quickly extinguishes his smoke...made his point...short and sweet

  • Zappa as a talk show host, lol, It would be insane

  • 6:00 onward, is the idea that has become everything since Politically Incorrect

@ Rahab 111222, PI came first!!!

  • @bizzipajaro I agree Zappa Just described Politically Incorrect, more than 20 years before it aired !

  • 6:15 Real Time with Bill Maher :)

  • This video ends a bit creepily.

  • Brown lipstick = kissing ass

  • This is from 1983 (somebody's probably already posted this fact earlier on, but I haven't bothered scrolling and now you won't need to do that either).

  • the video is awesome, but the quality makes your eyes bleed

  • Wow. Talk about ahead of his time. 25 years later, Bill Maher creates Politically Incorrect, a show pretty much identical to what Zappa described pitching back in 68.

    NBC really missed out.

  • Heh. Walks past the NO SMOKING sign at 0:30 holding his astray. A polite way of saying a big EFF-YOU. xD

  • Bright guy.

  • "You pay them"

    Haha.

  • Rofl "Brown Lipstick" as in chronic ass-kissers.Only Frank could come up with such a clever innuendo.

  • hey swimologist... nobody has to give a shit about your bullshit opinion, either.

those who love zappa's music, know what it's all about. and then there are people like you... so quit your bitching, you whiny little hateful bitch...

  • Amen Sir!!!! Well said.

  • Millions of Zappa fans around the world dont give a shit about your opinion. You just dont get it.Muzap is not for everyone.Espesially people like you who watch and comment on " The Carpenters"... you actually know the fucking words?! ROFL loser.

  • i appreciate your response... i really hate the haters... they hate, but can't even give a good reason WHY they hate... the world should be about freedom, and art, and beauty... when i see a man disrespect the dead, i get a bit pissed... i thank you for your support... at least i know that some people know what's up... peace...

  • hey swimologist... if you don't like zappa, that's cool... but don't bust hate upon the dead... maybe Zappa saw something that you did not see... he also fought for your rights... NOW, if you had any honor... you should go commit seppuku...

  • let me get this straight....you're telling a dead guy to get a clue?

  • really?...you like the Carpenters? That's not a joke?

  • I love YouTube. It gives me the chance to experience moments like these, even though I

    A. Wasn't old enough.

    B. Didn't grow up in a country where it was broadcast.

  • That's amazing: the talk show he is describing -- which he at some point pitched to NBC wanting to do -- is Politically Incorrect. And this has to be, what, ten years before that show premiered?

  • @Geneonijmegen Pretty much... the man was such a visionary! He had a whole idea about selling music digitally, directly to consumers, too... a decade or more before any of us heard of the Internet, email, MP3 players, or the iTunes music store.

So ahead of his time in so many ways...

  • Frank one of the Best People/Musician's in this lifetime.

  • According to Greg Russo's book Cosmik Debris, I believe the taping of this show was June 16, 1983.

  • Looking at this makes me think that maybe all a genius is is someone who has managed to stay true to what's really on all of our minds. It seems that somehow as people get any kind of power they lose touch with reality. Zappa always kept his feet on the ground, which is why I think he comes off as 'weird' but that's because we've come to accept automatons in suits and brown lipstick as 'normal.'

  • @Maxwellfig Your first sentence is an absolute gem!!!!!!. I thought people making comments on Youtube were dumbos..and then here you are. I've been sifting through the Frank Zappa uploads and realising how timeless he is. But you have managed to explain exactly what makes him so special. Unfortunately Letterman is completely of his time desperately seeking to make a comment thet gets a laugh without actually listening to what his guests say and completely unaware of the privilege of his position

  • I miss him.

  • 6:15 - 6:20 > Brilliant Idea.

  • Music is the Best!!!!!!!!!!

  • letterman: how do you get london symphony orchestra to do your stuff?

    zappa: you pay them.

  • but it's not funny. Zappa was quite bitter after the recording. Some musicians of the LSO got drunk in breaks, came late (and still demanded payment), and "bad notes played by various people" had to be removed.

  • @zetameta 'You pay them ALOT.' haha

  • Sorry if this has already been mentioned in the comments, but it sounds like Zappa came up with the original concept of Policitcally Incorrect. Does Bill Maher send money to the Zappa Family Trust?

  • This is June 1983

  • So typical and great to walk out with an ashtray! The corporate sanitizing in the early 80's was the beginning of the end for independent musicians like Zappa and he sensed it and came out like that. Balls. He had em'. And intellectual Balls too. He was a rebel WITH a cause. A lot of people owe Zappa- From The Simpsons to Bill Maher. He was a true Renaissance Man in the spirit of Voltaire. He pushed the boundaries of molded perceptions from music to politics. RIP u genius.. and Thanks.

  • I wish i could thumbs up that more. Couldn't agree with you more.

  • @houdinididiit Zappa was only absolutely amazing..... he left us much too soon.

  • @houdinididiit Well said my friend well said.

  • @houdinididiit Are you serious? In the early 80s' independent music was just getting a foot hold. He didn't walk out with an ashtray to make a statement, he wanted to smoke a cigarette, it was the 80's.

  • @houdinididiit I AGREE WITH YOU 100%....GENIUS!

  • @houdinididiit : Well said on Zappa and Bill Maher does owe it to him. I am now just getting into his music and appreciating how much of a genius he was and the brilliant ideas from orchestrating his live shows. I wish I was able to see him perform live as I started music (jazz) in the 90's. Man he had a sick arsenal of musicians! May his legacy live on and inspire others from Jazz to Rock.

  • @2mitches so true

  • @houdinididiit

The only other person I've seen walk out on a chatshow with a cigarette and an ashtray isthe commedian Peter Cook. Another total one off. And another who died too young, but not before making his mark. And what marks they made.

  • show me someone on late at night with commercially produced applause signs who doesn't wear brown lipstick! You'd have to go to cartoons,

  • Frank usually looked kind of tense in talk show situations, but here he looked nice and relaxed. Says a lot about Dave.

  • Cool video, thanks for posting.

  • Frank knew that the brown lipstick wearers would never consider his talk show format, but he mentioned it probably knowing that if this interview is watched at some future time his idea will eclipse whatever show is doing his idea.

  • thats right kissin ass haha ha

  • Hello! The talk show concept that Frank was talking about.....in 1968! Sounds like Bill Maher took that concept and ran with it years later!!!!!!!! I think it was something called "Politically Incorrect."

  • did ...did ahh Frank have an IQ of 280?

  • the radio in tennessee won't play him...i had to discover him on digital cable music. All they play on this radio here is southern rock and greatest hits crap

  • it's just another way to say kissing butt or brown nosing except the brown isn't on the nose but the lips

  • Brown lipstick - Dave was in on the joke. That's why his show was so cool circa 1985. Frank - what can ya say? I actually ask myself every day when I'm faced with a conundrum - "What Would Frank Do?"

  • Check out the Today Show interview for an example of Brown Lipstick in the Corporate Suite, Katie C has it smeared all over her face.

  • Pure genius. Simple as that.

  • letterman is way better than leno

  • brown lipstick - it took dave a while .

  • 2 days!!

  • Man, letterman has one of the best jobs ever. He's been on the air for so long and gets too meet so many people, happy day

  • smoking was always cool.. dying is cool, but not for the guy that's actualy dying..

  • dies of cancer. maybe smoking wasn't cool...

  • Protate cancer, not lung cancer.

  • lung or not, cig can cause cancer

  • Unless he was smoking cigs from his ass your a moron.

  • lord69z, knowing Zappa's proclivity to eccentricity and wanting to shock, maybe he did. morons unite.

  • gosh. when zappa talks about corporations, letterman jus gallantly changes the subject jus like that -"pop" maybe because it's a threat to the station since corporate sponsors are behind it.

  • HAHAHAHA, he walks out with an ashtray.

  • How come people don't smoke in TV anymore?

I mean, I don't like it, but when was it "not OK" anymore?

  • I wonder how smoking on TV worked out for him...

  • when they figured second hand smoking will kill ya

  • This was before Letterman's audience was forced to laugh in order to be in the audience. Shame that everything has to have a fucking laugh track behind it now...

  • Holy christ. VHS tape recording, record players. Where has time gone?

  • paul shaffer WISHES he could've played with zappa. gotta love frank's inquisitive glare at 4:34

  • Walks in with an ashtray, sets it on Mr. Asskisser's desk, and begins talking about brown lipstick.

    I love Frank Zappa.

    I LOVE FRANK ZAPPA.

  • Where can I get one of these D-I-J-A-T-O-L recordings at?And will my phonograph play it?

  • frank walks in smoking with ashtray in his hand. fuckin awesome.

  • dude you need the ash tray or else you'll cause a fire and people will die very painfully. This wouldn't be good for the sponsors such as Cracky dog food the pet food you're dog would choose if he could.

  • The funny bit is, the situation he describes regarding the confrontational talk-show he would have made occurs in another video here on Youtube when HE got on the Crossfire show against a man who called him an incest-advocating peddler. It didn't look like he enjoyed that man's idiocy...

  • first u lick ass and get brown.....

    then u put lipstick on....???

    mmmmmm and get brown again,,

  • I love Zappa. He was insanely intelligent and had more integrity than anyone on Earth ever. Zappas strong and honest opinions was so punk it made punk rock look like childrens music.

  • It's not so much that Zappa was `insanely intelligent' to quote your words but that corporate religious America is so stupid, corrupt and mind controlled. Look at the things that your country have done and Americans in general. They are the most entertained nation on the planet and the dumbest. The fact Frank lived in America and made these obvious observations suited him. If he was in Europe he'd be one of many people saying such things.

  • Wow, you paint with such broad strokes....must be a European thing.

  • Sounds like Bill Maher used Zappa's talkshow idea.

  • Zappa would have loved Maher, no doubt.

  • "you pay them." hahahah

  • you pay them. LOL. i love frank

  • 6:01 wow, Frank Zappa created "Politically Incorrect"

  • i like how letterman tries to change the brown lipstick (asskissing) topic.

  • they were always kinda like that but the bongo fury tour signed the deal

  • fz the only musical genius of our time bar no one at all.

  • amen

  • Don Van Vliet was on the show 2 times. Letterman should have had them on together.

  • that would of been a very very bad idea. don and frank were kinda at odds at this point in time

  • Gimme a break! Zappa has done more for artistic creativity than most artists will ever think of. Zappa was a genius!

  • how was he a condescending jerk??
