@azzy314159 there needs to be an equivalent of Godwin's law for Youtube comments.
As more Youtube comments get put up, the probability of someone touting the superiority of one country to another, or one generation to another, or one genre to another, approaches one.
@jackhorkheimer How could my statement be equated to a reference to eugenics. I did not specifically claim that America was in that sense superior. I meant that - so long as- America has such men, it will remain the greatest... etc. etc. I was merely eulogising the the greatness of men like him.
@azzy314159 what, I never equated your statement to eugenics. I said there needs to be another law similar to Godwin's law. Godwin's law has nothing to do with eugenics anyways.
I'm just chagrinned that people seem to always turn the comments section into something divisive--one country vs. another, one generation vs. another. Why not just appreciate the video instead of turning it into an argument about something else.
@Sunderlanding "exact same thing" is a bit of an exaggeration, don't you think? There's a difference between someone bringing an argument of the superiority of one country out of nowhere and someone critiquing that.
There is some hypocrisy in me arguing for an ideal I haven't fully attained, hoping for better, but I don't think I was being divisive. I don't think azzy was trying to be either tho. What would you do, besides believe something different or be quiet?
@jackhorkheimer I just think the comment boxes are there for people to say what they want. If that ends up being a vs b so what? It is true that this also includes your comment vs comment argument, but I can't help feeling you were comming accross as if you thought you were superior when you were basically doing the same thing.
Franks talk show idea from 1968 is basically the same format Bill Maher used for Politically Incorrect and is now using for Real Time. Bill Maher isn't bad, but wouldn't it have been great to have Frank doing that show!

@restlessr84 ...well first, the corporate suite: anything linked to "the corporatocracy". which the TV-world, being owned by a handful of people, can be seen as part of "the corporate suite". Brown lipstick is what you get when you're kissing ass. So, Zappa wanted to talk about "brown lipstick in the corporate suite", and if you notice between 1:30 to 1:45, he accuses Letterman of taking part in this activity, which he dismisses by saying the cards help "keep that from happening." Hilarious! =)
@TheRealDerfMan thank you very much for the clarificaion. :) While I didn't alwaysagree wtih Zappa, he was one of the few musical entertainers who had good, thought-provoking political insights. And, of course, a very funny guy.
@restlessr84 Glad I could help! I feel the same way about Zappa. There's a few things he said I might not totally agree with, but when he says something, he's given it some thought and it always comes out right. For one, I'm a pot-smoker, and don't like cigarettes. He likes coffee, I prefer tea. ;) But in general, I agree with Zappa's way of thinking. Love the way he pokes fun at many things worth poking fun at. Plastic People, Bobby Brown, Flower Punk, Disco Boy, great stuff everywhere. Cheers!
As unusual as Zappa's music is, along with his irreverence, it's so refreshing to see an artist with such integrity & respect towards his fans to be so open & honest.
This is from 1983 (somebody's probably already posted this fact earlier on, but I haven't bothered scrolling and now you won't need to do that either).
Wow. Talk about ahead of his time. 25 years later, Bill Maher creates Politically Incorrect, a show pretty much identical to what Zappa described pitching back in 68.
hey swimologist... nobody has to give a shit about your bullshit opinion, either.
those who love zappa's music, know what it's all about. and then there are people like you... so quit your bitching, you whiny little hateful bitch...

hey swimologist... if you don't like zappa, that's cool... but don't bust hate upon the dead... maybe Zappa saw something that you did not see... he also fought for your rights... NOW, if you had any honor... you should go commit seppuku...
That's amazing: the talk show he is describing -- which he at some point pitched to NBC wanting to do -- is Politically Incorrect. And this has to be, what, ten years before that show premiered?
@Geneonijmegen Pretty much... the man was such a visionary! He had a whole idea about selling music digitally, directly to consumers, too... a decade or more before any of us heard of the Internet, email, MP3 players, or the iTunes music store.
Looking at this makes me think that maybe all a genius is is someone who has managed to stay true to what's really on all of our minds. It seems that somehow as people get any kind of power they lose touch with reality. Zappa always kept his feet on the ground, which is why I think he comes off as 'weird' but that's because we've come to accept automatons in suits and brown lipstick as 'normal.'
@Maxwellfig Your first sentence is an absolute gem!!!!!!. I thought people making comments on Youtube were dumbos..and then here you are. I've been sifting through the Frank Zappa uploads and realising how timeless he is. But you have managed to explain exactly what makes him so special. Unfortunately Letterman is completely of his time desperately seeking to make a comment thet gets a laugh without actually listening to what his guests say and completely unaware of the privilege of his position
but it's not funny. Zappa was quite bitter after the recording. Some musicians of the LSO got drunk in breaks, came late (and still demanded payment), and "bad notes played by various people" had to be removed.
Sorry if this has already been mentioned in the comments, but it sounds like Zappa came up with the original concept of Policitcally Incorrect. Does Bill Maher send money to the Zappa Family Trust?
So typical and great to walk out with an ashtray! The corporate sanitizing in the early 80's was the beginning of the end for independent musicians like Zappa and he sensed it and came out like that. Balls. He had em'. And intellectual Balls too. He was a rebel WITH a cause. A lot of people owe Zappa- From The Simpsons to Bill Maher. He was a true Renaissance Man in the spirit of Voltaire. He pushed the boundaries of molded perceptions from music to politics. RIP u genius.. and Thanks.
@houdinididiit Are you serious? In the early 80s' independent music was just getting a foot hold. He didn't walk out with an ashtray to make a statement, he wanted to smoke a cigarette, it was the 80's.
@houdinididiit : Well said on Zappa and Bill Maher does owe it to him. I am now just getting into his music and appreciating how much of a genius he was and the brilliant ideas from orchestrating his live shows. I wish I was able to see him perform live as I started music (jazz) in the 90's. Man he had a sick arsenal of musicians! May his legacy live on and inspire others from Jazz to Rock.
The only other person I've seen walk out on a chatshow with a cigarette and an ashtray isthe commedian Peter Cook. Another total one off. And another who died too young, but not before making his mark. And what marks they made.
Frank knew that the brown lipstick wearers would never consider his talk show format, but he mentioned it probably knowing that if this interview is watched at some future time his idea will eclipse whatever show is doing his idea.
Hello! The talk show concept that Frank was talking about.....in 1968! Sounds like Bill Maher took that concept and ran with it years later!!!!!!!! I think it was something called "Politically Incorrect."
the radio in tennessee won't play him...i had to discover him on digital cable music. All they play on this radio here is southern rock and greatest hits crap
Brown lipstick - Dave was in on the joke. That's why his show was so cool circa 1985. Frank - what can ya say? I actually ask myself every day when I'm faced with a conundrum - "What Would Frank Do?"
gosh. when zappa talks about corporations, letterman jus gallantly changes the subject jus like that -"pop" maybe because it's a threat to the station since corporate sponsors are behind it.
This was before Letterman's audience was forced to laugh in order to be in the audience. Shame that everything has to have a fucking laugh track behind it now...
dude you need the ash tray or else you'll cause a fire and people will die very painfully. This wouldn't be good for the sponsors such as Cracky dog food the pet food you're dog would choose if he could.
The funny bit is, the situation he describes regarding the confrontational talk-show he would have made occurs in another video here on Youtube when HE got on the Crossfire show against a man who called him an incest-advocating peddler. It didn't look like he enjoyed that man's idiocy...
I love Zappa. He was insanely intelligent and had more integrity than anyone on Earth ever. Zappas strong and honest opinions was so punk it made punk rock look like childrens music.
It's not so much that Zappa was `insanely intelligent' to quote your words but that corporate religious America is so stupid, corrupt and mind controlled. Look at the things that your country have done and Americans in general. They are the most entertained nation on the planet and the dumbest. The fact Frank lived in America and made these obvious observations suited him. If he was in Europe he'd be one of many people saying such things.
This video has the best ending on Youtube.

Balls.

@houdinididiit I AGREE WITH YOU 100%....GENIUS!

And what marks they made.

show me someone on late at night with commercially produced applause signs who doesn't wear brown lipstick! You'd have to go to cartoons,

Frank usually looked kind of tense in talk show situations, but here he looked nice and relaxed. Says a lot about Dave.

Cool video, thanks for posting.
forksmuggler 2 years ago
Frank knew that the brown lipstick wearers would never consider his talk show format, but he mentioned it probably knowing that if this interview is watched at some future time his idea will eclipse whatever show is doing his idea.

Hello! The talk show concept that Frank was talking about.....in 1968! Sounds like Bill Maher took that concept and ran with it years later!!!!!!!! I think it was something called "Politically Incorrect."

it's just another way to say kissing butt or brown nosing except the brown isn't on the nose but the lips

Brown lipstick - Dave was in on the joke. That's why his show was so cool circa 1985. Frank - what can ya say? I actually ask myself every day when I'm faced with a conundrum - "What Would Frank Do?"

Check out the Today Show interview for an example of Brown Lipstick in the Corporate Suite, Katie C has it smeared all over her face.

gosh. when zappa talks about corporations, letterman jus gallantly changes the subject jus like that -"pop" maybe because it's a threat to the station since corporate sponsors are behind it.

dude you need the ash tray or else you'll cause a fire and people will die very painfully. This wouldn't be good for the sponsors such as Cracky dog food the pet food you're dog would choose if he could.
stargate669 2 years ago
The funny bit is, the situation he describes regarding the confrontational talk-show he would have made occurs in another video here on Youtube when HE got on the Crossfire show against a man who called him an incest-advocating peddler. It didn't look like he enjoyed that man's idiocy...

I love Zappa. He was insanely intelligent and had more integrity than anyone on Earth ever. Zappas strong and honest opinions was so punk it made punk rock look like childrens music.
Nasher900 2 years ago 17
It's not so much that Zappa was `insanely intelligent' to quote your words but that corporate religious America is so stupid, corrupt and mind controlled. Look at the things that your country have done and Americans in general. They are the most entertained nation on the planet and the dumbest. The fact Frank lived in America and made these obvious observations suited him. If he was in Europe he'd be one of many people saying such things.
stargate669 2 years ago
Wow, you paint with such broad strokes....must be a European thing.
