Please don't get me wrong; I love JK, Harry Potter, etc. However, I don't get this lawsuit. First of all, there are many other Harry Potter reference books out there, so why chase down this one? Almost every popular work was a reference book not written by the author, all of them quoting the book extensively. Read any LOTR guides? How about all those guides detailing the symbolism of A Tale of Two Cities? I don't think this thing is breaking the law, in either the US or Europe.
I'm not sure about Europe, but this work definitely violates US copyright law. The work violates Rowling's exclusive right to derivative works. Additionally, the author of this "reference" work took many passages from Rowling's books word for word. As a note, I'm sure the Lord of the Rings guides are licensed, and A Tale of Two Cities is in the public domain.
