i did this to a cq60 but i've baked the mobo in the oven for 8 min at aprox 200 celsius then i put a shim of 0.5 mm of aluminium between nvidia and heat sink and thermal pad of 2mm thik and a ceramic plate of 2mm on the other side of the mobo just to be in contact with the metal of the upper lid that sustain the keyboard.now temp is60 and it was 110 just watching youtube
It should not be spread out, the way too apply thermal compound is by laying a little dot in the centre of the gpu, about 1,5 mm in diameter and then just place the cooler carefully ontop, the presure from the cooler ontop of the gpu is enuf too spread the thermal compound equally over the whole gpu. in that way you also make sure it is not becomeing a heat block between the gpu and the cooler, too say it like this, its better too apply too little than too much...
U are applying WAAY too much thermal compound,That way it will only block the heat transfer between the gpu and the cooler.How Thermal Compound works is createing a better bond between the gpu and the cooler by going down into all the microscopic "holes" that is on the gpu chip itself and make sure it transfers heat too the cooler, the way ur doing it is only makeing it worse,Now the thermal compound is acting like a semi cooler,Just makeing the bond between the cooler and the gpu less effective

.... only two and a half years of light use of the DVD player and moderate total computer use.. my optical drive with Lightscribe quit.... tried all the online software fixes and bought a new drive .... same problem.... from watching this video I can see how poorly made the unit is with the poor heat sinks etc.... no way I'm buying a motherboard after the expense of the drive... I bought a new other brand and no more HP anything for me...
Thank you so much for uploading this video, especially emphasizing the "no power condition" or laptop would not boot. that gave me a hint we had same problem and its really the Nvidia chip that made my laptop to stop working.. May God bless people like you who are giving away solutions and help save another person from spending hard earned money.. again thank you.. I'm finally using it right now writing this comment.

If the chip is defective. Like the nvidia CEO said. You can't do nothing but not buy HP NO MORE ! :) is easy as that

I hope you put thermal grease between that fold in the copper lol.

You should really study the components in your laptop and methods and best practises in its full detail, before trying to fix things like this.
I'm giving you the answers on the two points from my last reply.
1) Too many paste creates air bubbles. Air is a very bad heat conductor, it's +- 16000x worse than copper...
2) Too many paste creates a thicker layer and paste conduct heat very bad relatively against material.
3) That copper thing you've put in, is not solid, see point 1.
Your own fault

Wow, total fail attempt to do something right.
I wouldn't call this a "repair", but rather "Let's get it fubar!".
You did the following wrong:
1) Putting way too many thermal paste;
2) Putting that copper thing between your paste.
Because of this, the chips were overheating, causing the soldier to crack and alter. In the long run, your system won't boot anymore at all.
Now you've got to:
1) Reball solder joints from chips;
2) Reapply paste.
A lot of work and costs for equipment for reballing.

I was getting nothing except for the power LED coming on and the fan for 1 second then nothing.
I should mention that my fix only lasted about a month when the board behind the chip really overheated.
It may be due to the heat sink I used (penny) not being enough.

I need to know if you were having a : No Power @ all problem ?
Like no fans or sounds on startup. Or were you getting the traditional
black screen - blue lights everywhere , fans turning , and noises but no video , just a
black screen ? Please let me know.

cooper shims damage the processor. This method is temporal: meaning : will last for a while. but reballing wil really fix the problem!
