I am a whole foods girl! Their organic store brand works for me if I am looking for the cheapest product, and if you buy by the case you get 10 percent off. Obviously you cant do this for fresh produce but I am not a raw foodiest so it works. Trader Joes has never impressed me- never!
I work at whole foods. What many customers do not know is that many products from trader joes and whole foods (eggs, milk, and other WF's '365' products) are the exact same ones. They come from a 'natural' supplier. I'm not saying that the products aren't natural, but they are the exact same ones. I learned this because we received a shipment of milk for WF's when it all came in with the trader joes label! Don't be fooled.
Do your research, dummy. Trader Joe's pita chips ARE Stacy's pita chips. They allow Trader Joe's to put their name on the bag. They tasted almost identical. They ARE identical.
Incorrect. Aldi's and Trader Joe's is owned by the same German family (Albrecht brothers (sp?)). But they are completely seperate companies. And, TJ's keeps tight control over their supply. We drop suppliers when they don't meet our requirements. You are actually getting a higher quality food item than your 'traditional' grocery store. No GMO, No HFCS, No preservatives, No artificial color.
@kalebhgoodwin You are a LIAR. Trader Joes is in no way affiliated with Aldi in day to day business. They are two completely separate companies. Stop spreading misinformation. When you buy a product with the "Trader Joes" name on it ... it is guaranteed to have NO PRESERVATIVES, NOTHING ARTIFICIAL, NO GMO'S, NO CRAP, etc.
@codethis I love Trader Joe's business! They know how to make money, with 10 billion in sales yearly. they have over 375 stores now. they doubled their company by 50% in 5 years. According to supermarket in 2006, they had 250 stores with revenue of 4.5 billion. In 2011 they have 365 stores with revenue of 8.5 billion. They parent company owns aldi which has over 9000 stores.
@codethis Now any billion dollar company has a board of trustees. Meaning yes, they do meet together. Trader Joes is never located next to an aldi market for reasons! They used aldi's money who is a 71 billion dollar company to buy trader joes, and they also continue to fund trader joes to open new stores. It is impossible for a grocery store to double its size without funding from other companies. trader joes is privately owned, so it has to gets its money from aldi.
@codethis To educate yourself, you need to know, that trader is not GMO verified by the Non-GMO Project. According to the USDA 90% of corn is GMO. There is no way, you can have a 10 billion dollar company selling corn that is not GMO! Each store sells at minimum 5 pallets of canned corn per store. there is no way, they can even source non gmo corn with that volume. 96% of soy is GMO according to USDA. there is no way, a billion dollar company can even find enough NON GMO products.
@kalebhgoodwin Personally, I have no problem with GMO's. You can't feed the fucking world on organic food ... it's just not possible. I was simply stating what Trader Joes says on their web site.
@codethis So thats why whole foods said they cant stop selling GMO foods. In fact, even organic foods have GMO traces. Monsato is a very corrupt company btw.
and last thing, i study grocery stores for a living, so i do know a little bit more than the average consumer of america.
@codethis Also trader joes is ranked by greenpeace(non-profit organization trying to save the earth) to be the worst grocery store when it comes to seafood practices. they even said that in 2020, there will be no more fish if trader joes continues with their fishing practices. But trader joes has recently announced they will try to have better fishing practices. i study grocery stores for a living, so i do know a little bit more than the average consumer of america.
Dont forget that wholefoods also has their own private label which also is significantly less than the name brand version it is bias to say that only tj's is the only shopping destination for these products
@llandod77-the stuff at TJ's goes out of code quickly because it contains no preservatives. The product is all coded, just like anywhere else, and any customer can check the code before purchasing. And any employee will tell you to keep your bread in the fridge or freezer, otherwise it will go bad.
I do really like shopping at whole foods don't get me wrong, but I rarely do because it's pricey. I tend to go to trader joes more often. I think many things at whole foods are just as healthy and good as at trader joes, also, things that are organic are always good no matter what in my opinion :)
true, better staff at traders joes, but the produce is the bottom of the line, milk and dairy is milk and dairy every where, bread is bread, you should see how much stuff gets returned to tj because it goes off so quick

Trader Joe's private label vs whole foods name brand products? Why not compare 365 Labeled products instead? Poor comparison. Also, trader joes doesnt have nearly the same standards WFM has when it comes to natural and organics. The folks on here who are bashing WFM should read up on natural and organic foods and realize the differences between these two companies and their products selections.
No market i know of sells entirely non-gmo foods. That includes trader joes and whole foods market. That being said wfm is a founding leader of the non-gmo project and stocks a much greater selection of non-gmo foods in comparison to tj's.
@jeffread -there are strict rules & regulations to be able to label an item "organic" or "all natural", so the "standards" are not negotiable or debatable. And, since TJ is NOT attempting to corner the Organic or All Natural market, there really isn't a reason to compare the two stores. TJ's is not trying to be Whole Foods. They provide Organic options and All Natural options when they find a source that provides the quality they expect and a price that is reasonable.
there are only 'strict rules & regulations' on products produced organically. The term 'natural' has never been regulated by the usda, except in meat/poultry. Whole foods market and Trader joes both determine their own standards for what they consider to be "all natural", what is 'not negotiable' about that? The two companies and their products are compared all the time because they are direct competitors of one another.
Why don't they price the Trader Joe's brand against whole foods private label? why are they going against the name brands in whole foods? Of course name brands are going to cost more then private labels. Shop the 365 label in whole foods and it'll be cheaper.
First of all, if you like both stores, this is a good thing. Why is there an attack on either stores? The fact is both of them do good jobs. Expense? I hear this from people who think Mc Donalds and fast food is CHEAP. Think about the long term effect on eating this garbage. If you eat this, what is the REAL COST? The fact is the focus should be raising COSTS on FAST FOODS. Why? The people who go to these places get bigger, fatter, sicker, faster. So, why not have them pay?
Whole foods does not contain preservatives unlike Joe's. That's the big difference for me. Shopping from both places is better when u know exactly what u want to eat.
try comparing whole foods brand vs. trader joes brand. That seems to make more sense. when you compare "generic" vs. "brand name" the generic will always be the least expensive. Honestly for comparable quality whole foods private label "365" prices are quite competitive. At whole foods you know exactly what you are getting and where it came from.
@petersenjason Agreed. Yes whole foods is expensive but at least I know where the product came from. Joe's does that too, gives us product location but not all products at Joe's have normal ingredients. Meats for example the one in packages have nitrates, nitrites, and so on. Joe's does not have a big collection anyway. Its best to buy from both places.
I have comparison shopped at both Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. I believe in feeding my family healthy food, but I work in education, so I can't afford to spend an arm and a leg. I walk out of TJ's spending 50-60 bucks each visit and have 4-5 bags. Even bargain shopping at Whole Food's can't yield those kinds of results.
It really does seem nonsensical to compare Trader Joe's private labels against name brands at Whole Foods. Why wouldn't you price compare Traders Joe's private labels against Whole Foods' private labels. Wouldn't that be more relevant and insightful. This seems a lot like a video a company would put together as advertisement.
@Vampirate76 That was my exact thought too when I saw this video. It doesn't make any sense. They could even have just compared Whole Food private labels to Whole Foods regular brands which are side by side on the shelves anyway to make it even easier and save a trip too! These are Trader Joe's people trying to steer customers away from Whole Foods and to Trader Joe's intstead...

@wekabord More Whole Foods-carried items seem to be making their way into Trader Joe's. So almost exclusively isn't entirely. Plus, Whole Foods also has a very large and prominent line of of private labels. (Most that I've tried are good too). Seems tough to penalize them for carrying more external options. Comparing prices on items in common, or private label vs. private label would be far more constructive and inisghtful.
@Vampirate76 You're right Vampirate76. I'm young, broke, and in debt and Whole Foods has all of their own private label items to keep even me within my budget. Besides why would i want to go hang out with a bunch of bell ringin', hawaiian t-shirt wearing creeps.
Trader Joe's is actually cheaper than the chain grocery stores around here. I can get organic vegetables there cheaper than the non organic vegetables at the A&P!! How crazy is that? (A&P is supposed to be a cheap supermarket for those who don't know of it).
“Here is an article on how poor the quality standards are for Whole Foods Markets. They claim to be on top of the ingredients found in their products, but here is an example of how they continue to sell a product that is harmfull to the environment and not organic at all.”
Why dont you talk mention the hundreds of "private lable" offerings at Wholefoods??? The 365 line is awsome and is equal to or better in quality as well as costing less much of the time. I love both stores so lets get the facts straight.
The pita chips should taste EXACTLY the same because Trader Joe's Pita chips are actually manufactured by Stacy's (owned by Pepsi-Co). And if you did a yogurt test against Stonyfield's sold at Whole-Foods, guess what? Same product. Trader Joe's has TONS of agreements with big name food companies to sell their products under a Trader Joe moniker.
Trader Joe's is more of a snack/picnic store. They're great for that, but I would never cook a real meal from them. Everything there feels too "packaged". Most of their prices are good but one of the things that bothers me is their inconsistency -- just when you find something unusual that you really like they discontinue it! With no notice. Drives me nuts. One morning I went in there and they were actually out of rice. How can a store that size be out of rice?
@owlcu Trader Joe's discontinues products because they have limited shelf space and only keep the best value and sellers. for every product they discontinue something new comes in. Plus they use small suppliers who sometimes cannot keep up with the demand of over 340 stores. Often things that are discontinued will come back over time. Trader Joe's has high expectations of their vendors and if the quality does not meet standard it is pulled from the shelf.

@TheJnmcbride Thanks for the explanation, but no matter what reason for TJ's inconsistency, the bottom line is that they're inconsistent! That is a major flaw in any business, but they are successful mostly because of their low prices and "hipness". Too bad their prices are just as inconsistent as their products. Nothing hip about that. Every time I go in something's more expensive or gone, and it makes me want to grab a manager by the throat and hurl him into the wilted produce.
@owlcu Trader Joe's loves you and will listen to you as a customer. You don't have to hurl anyone just explain ypur issue and thay will listen. "hipness" is not their concern they just wat to please their customers. There is a no questions asked money back guarantee an al products, if you hate it return it, if its wilted tell someone, trust me you will get a response, TJ's values you as a customer
@TheJnmcbride Thank you, and I do notice that their employees tend to be more approachable and happier than those at other stores, probably because they're treated better -- unless of course they're just sneaking into the bins of dark chocolate. I'll try asking again about the frozen calamari.
what is the point of this video? private label brands will always be less expensive than name brands. perhaps you should compare similar items. how about private label store brands vs private label store brands or name brands vs name brands. name brands will always be higher priced than store brands, even in the same store.
Whole Foods Market is far better than Trader Joes, if you are looking for a great quality all natural healthy product try Whole Foods 365 label... they are fanatastic and a better deal than anything at TJs.
I just bought at Trader Joe's sliced Organic American Cheese singles, I was grillng some Organic chicken breast and thought it would taste good with a single slice of cheese on it. As it melted, I noticed by the edges a mesh like material inside the chesse as it began to melted and reseed on to my chicken. I once read that Kraft or someone was useing a plastic substance in their product, so I stopped buying it. How can Trader Joe's call it ORGANIC?
This is because most private company's are in contract with the bigger ones and they just make it in a different label/packaging etc... All our food in chain stores pretty much comes from a handful of major suppliers. Want real food, grow it or raise it yourself. Pretty sad.
@digitaldud You're entitled to think GM's are fine, what about those who disagree, shouldn't we have the right to *know* what we're consuming? Do you think Monsanto cares about your health? They only worry if you get sick enough to stop buying stuff. Lawsuits are supposed to restrain unethical practices, but in fact, these huge corp's just buy changes to laws, and assault the courts with megabucks. GMO's are not good food, check the actual science (filter out the corp-sponsored sci).
The reason these products taste the same is because they are. A lot of Trader Joes products are produced by the manufacturers of the name brands, specifically the 3 ones featured here. Same maker, different label. Same goes for Whole Foods 365 brand. Exactly the same product.
trader joes and whole foods are totally different. Joe's is cheaper, but Whole Foods has insane selection. I love both stores, but if I was rich, I would shop at Whole foods. Plus, Trader Joes runs out of stuff ALL THE TIME. its a quirky company that succeeds by keeping the prices as low as possible, but that means small stores with limited storage. you have to get there early to get everything you need, and that can be a pain for those who avoid the mornings (such as myself)
This seems rather bias to trader joes, and I say that as a fan of both stores.
Sometimes, Whole Foods has the cheaper option. Example; soymilk. I can get 3 things of soy milk for 5 bucks at HF, and it's in a special container that holds for months if left sealed; unless prices have changed since I haven't found something as cheap at TJ.
As well, TJ charges a pretty penny for tea; bagged tea. I can go and get bulk, whole leaf teas at WF.
Both stores have things they're better at. *shrugs*
Whole foods is a racist store and I will never give them my money. They hate minorities, trust me. Overpriced and not real friendly at all. Listen to me now or pay later... Tell everyone to not shop there they will get you believe me! Don't say I warned you. "F" WholeFoods! Not worth it!

@razorbladekissss - that's because they don't want to make it look obvious. They chew those people up, use them and throw them out... employed slavery. I Think they have a connection with the Grey Aliens is what someone told me. Any how screw them I will give someone else my money who deserves it.
@hydrobot2003 i actually agree with you. ever notice how western society throws away old people cause they're no longer strong slaves nor good consumers. you're only as important as your ranking of importance to corporations, which have been proven to all at the end of the day tie back to the rothschilds, who actually own (or at least manage) everything here. slaves with little to lose will rebel, so the system works to meet basic physical & psychological needs...
I just started working at Whole Foods, and they told us that Trader Joe's doesn't have the same strict rules that we have. At Whole Foods, we don't sell anything that has artificial flavorings/colorings or hydrogenated (and partially hydrogenated) fats and oils. Trader Joe's is cheaper because of their lower standards for the things that they sell. Lots of stuff at Trader Joe's has "Red 40" and crap like that in it, hence the cheaper prices.
@andiebendie12 - You're being fed biased misinformation. What they're calling "strict rules" are actually not "rules," nor are they "strict." Many products at Whole Foods have artificial coloring and flavor as well as hydrogenated fats and oils, so that's not true. So much for the "higher" standards. Prices are not dictated by standards but by the decisions stores make re: suppliers, shipping, order size, packaging, displays, types of payments accepted, store features, decor, etc.,
@andiebendie12 Your wrong. Tj's has no artificial dye, preservatives, GMSO. or MSG in any of their private labeled products. They are cheaper because they contract directly with the manufacturer. No middle man.
@andiebendie12 that is simply NOT TRUE on all accounts- I am here to tell you that if it has the trader joes name on it, there is nothing artificial, genetically modified, or "not real" in it. TJS food is actually a higher standard BECAUSE of this, and no taste or quality is compromised. Get your facts right before you start spewing lies.
@andiebendie12 - That's a lie and Whole Foods is also able to sell Cloned Cow meat that was approved by the FDA and they admit that they don't have to tell you or else they would label their meats... "Not from Cloned Beef" and they will not do that. I always found artificial things and GMO foods at whole foods so that response of yours is invalid. Whole Foods won't ever get my money ever again...
i heard someone say that whole foods owns trader joes, and that whole foods sends all there stock that doesnt sell well to trader joes, but they sell it at like 50-80% off. I was wondering if anyone knows if this is true.
@daelsterdam None of that is true. Trader Joe's is not owned by Whole Foods and the idea that Whole Foods sends all the food that doesn't sell to Trader Joe's is ridiculous. They're not even the same packaging. Places like Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and Aldi all contract to have their "store brand" food made for them, often times by major food companies.
Aldi has really stepped up their game in the past few years, too! They are offering healthy options, now, at less expensive prices than major grocers.
It's comparing apples with oranges. WF has their own generic brand that is just as low priced. The main difference is that WF is bigger, offers larger selection and has sophisticated feel compared to the "small farmer's market in country" feel of TJ.
I freely admit that Trader's Joe does kick ass, more unique fare; there products seemed to be geared towards a more healthy lifestyle, with the exception of a few, and overall cheaper prices.
@TheMotherfer i'm not so sure about that. my mother travels far to shop at that place, and she came back with some multigrain thing that tasted really good, but when i read the label, it had msg in it! my mother really isn't so good a shopper!
Most of prepackaged stuff at Joe's is just rebranded with there logo. For example the Stacys chips are the same company that makes the Joes pita chips. However they might slightly change the recipe for Trader Joes.
On a side note:
I bought some olive oil and red wine viniger dressing at trader joes today and it was absolutely awful. aftertaste was a beast! A warning...
That said, we generally have the best price on most items. You just have to be aware of the size vs. price that you are paying for on things you would normally get somewhere else.
It's misleading because Trader Joe's doesn't put price-per-ounce information on their signs.
The thing about Trader Joe's (And I work there), is that some of the prices are misleading. The initial price might be lower, but the package sizes are less than comparable brands (even the same product that 's just private labeled). So sometimes, even though you are getting a smaller, more manageable package, you are actually paying more per ounce than you would normally pay if you were to buy from somewhere else.
@DystopianFuture2day lol whole foods has amazing food though. i could live off of their pizza (idk if all of them have the pizza...but omg whole foods princeton....amazing pizza!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it tastes like the real pizza they make in italy)
@humanoflife I agree TJ's rocks (and they've FINALLY moved into Portland, Maine. But look, Whole Foods takes a back seat to no one in terms of friendliness. Both stores are great. Yes, WF is more expensive in general. But they have some amazing stuff that is well priced and not available anywhere else, even TJs (when their organic cherries are in season, there's no where else I'd rather be than the WF product section!)
The difference between employees at TJ vs WF is night and day. TJ cashiers are much more real and friendly for the most part. Most WF cashiers I have encountered don't smile or even greet you with simple eye contact. Only recently did I have a WF lady be friendly but she was so over the top and forced it was nauseating! Be real.
@MsKnowledgeSeeker I disagree completely. I shop at the Whole Foods in San Diego and all of the cashiers are genuine and friendly. So are the butchers, the vegetable guys and the ladies behind the prepared foods counter.
you could do the same comparison at any grocery store vs. their own house brand or another stores house brand. I guess it was just easier to pick on Wholefoods! And besides she should have priced matched against 365 brand, Wholefoods private label. Is this lady really a smart shopper??? I think not!!
I think that website might actually be a commercial for Whole Foods and all the food there was very expensive.. Maybe Trader Joe's place would taste good and BE good for us... And have a great price for people who want to lose weight and can't afford really expensive food. Tell me where it is please, is it in B.C? if not then Dang it!!
Really, I went to a website about diet foods which are yummy and they showed a lot of food which was really good well... looked really good, and it was all from Whole Foods.. So I went there, and I couldn't find ANYTHING from what I saw in the website.. I found one thing though.. It was DRY soda, and called as low calorie soda because it only has 50 calories.. I thought it'd taste really good but then it actually tasted like shit... Gross... Where is Trader Joe's? I wanna try it out. please tell
Every region of stores at WFM has different products depending on what's available to them. So if the commercial was shot in a different region than your local store than yes the products can and most likely will be different, but you'll most likely be able to find it in a different brand. Also venders for the stores change constantly-new ones come in, and ones that aren't selling go out. It also depends on what's available currently to the buyers. Ask store Team Members they can be very helpful
Whenever I buy and eat many foods from Trader Joe's I have nightmares that night. I don't know what Trader Joe's does to their foods--workers, low wages (they only pay their employees around $10 per hour---Whole Foods pays their employees more than that, plus a type of profit-sharing). The nightmares are strange as I don't usually have them, but I have done tests and it kind of freaks me out about stuff from Trader Joe's. I generally like the store though and not all of the foods do this!
TJ's P.T. employees max. out at around 19.00 an hour. F.T. hourly employees max out at around 30.00 an hour plus over time (45.00 an hour) if they want it.
TJ's has great benefits:
*TJ's contributes 15% of ALL employees wages to a retirement fund. No cost to the employee. (NOBODY else does this!)
*Health Insurance for ALL employees.
*Two weeks paid vacation for part time employees.
*Three to Four weeks paid vacation to full time employees.
Trader Joe's does not and can not guarentee that their products to not contain GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms). Whole Foods does, they also refuse to carry any products with artificial colorings, flavorings, sweeteners, etc. They absolutely don't allow any antibiotics or hormones in their meats, seafood or dairy. So maybe that's why you're getting those bad dreams....
I use to think that, however, I have seen a couple things (rarely) there that have fructose corn syrup and the meats and chicken must say organic or it has steroids and whole foods sells non organic meats as well and be careful with their produce, it has to say organic and not that stupid new saying "fresh from the fields' which means non organic!
why wasn't this a comparison of Whole Foods Private Label items vs. Trader Joe's? ohhhhh, because there is no price difference there. i get it now. Premium brands featured are also available at other retailers for even higher prices than Whole Foods.
I usually find I have to go to whole foods and trader joes, but it's really convenient for me since they are right around the corner from each other! ^_^ the only problem is that I don't have a cooler yet to keep the frozen foods cold while I go to the other store, my frozen vegetables were nearly cooked when I got outta whole foods! lol
Ya ....this is obvious. The thing is the people who shop at Whole Foods are people who don't mind spending a little extra in order to be able to get all the stuff they want at one place. If you REALLY want to get the best deals you might have to go to 3 or 4 different grocery stores for all your shopping. It just depends on the individual.
I love a bargain as much as the next person...but I'd rather support a small U.S. company like Annie's than a huge German-owned discount-grocery chain (Trader Joes).
I'm confused...Whole Foods has their own Private Label brands. Why are you comparing Trader Joe's Private Label to brand names you bought at Whole Foods? Why wouldn't you compare Whole Foods Private Label brands to the national brands at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's Private Label brand to national brands at Trader Joe's?
Someone didn't do her homework...Seriously. This is NOT an apples-to-apples comparison. She should be comparing Trader Joe's with WFM's 365 brand. Otherwise, what's the point?
I am a whole foods girl! Their organic store brand works for me if I am looking for the cheapest product, and if you buy by the case you get 10 percent off. Obviously you cant do this for fresh produce but I am not a raw foodiest so it works. Trader Joes has never impressed me- never!

And the people (said morons) are willing to pay three times the price.
It's an amazing and a great gimmick, because people (morons) are BUYING it.
More power to them.
If you can convince the ignorant ... the world is yours!

@codethis So thats why whole foods said they cant stop selling GMO foods. In fact, even organic foods have GMO traces. Monsato is a very corrupt company btw.
and last thing, i study grocery stores for a living, so i do know a little bit more than the average consumer of america.
kalebhgoodwin 2 months ago
@codethis Also trader joes is ranked by greenpeace(non-profit organization trying to save the earth) to be the worst grocery store when it comes to seafood practices. they even said that in 2020, there will be no more fish if trader joes continues with their fishing practices. But trader joes has recently announced they will try to have better fishing practices. i study grocery stores for a living, so i do know a little bit more than the average consumer of america.

Dont forget that wholefoods also has their own private label which also is significantly less than the name brand version it is bias to say that only tj's is the only shopping destination for these products
ggarzaification 7 months ago
@llandod77-the stuff at TJ's goes out of code quickly because it contains no preservatives. The product is all coded, just like anywhere else, and any customer can check the code before purchasing. And any employee will tell you to keep your bread in the fridge or freezer, otherwise it will go bad.

If you buy Whole Foods private label you'll be saving money! 365 is ridiculously cheap compared to brand name food.

I much prefer TJ's to WholePaycheck, but I will say this, if you are a fan of the Ezekiel breads, it is a full $1 less at WF than it is at TJ's.

I do really like shopping at whole foods don't get me wrong, but I rarely do because it's pricey. I tend to go to trader joes more often. I think many things at whole foods are just as healthy and good as at trader joes, also, things that are organic are always good no matter what in my opinion :)

@jeffread right because those GMO foods at whole foods are so tasty!
JustABitchyCancer 9 months ago
@JustABitchyCancer
No market i know of sells entirely non-gmo foods. That includes trader joes and whole foods market. That being said wfm is a founding leader of the non-gmo project and stocks a much greater selection of non-gmo foods in comparison to tj's.
jeffread 7 months ago
@jeffread -there are strict rules & regulations to be able to label an item "organic" or "all natural", so the "standards" are not negotiable or debatable. And, since TJ is NOT attempting to corner the Organic or All Natural market, there really isn't a reason to compare the two stores. TJ's is not trying to be Whole Foods. They provide Organic options and All Natural options when they find a source that provides the quality they expect and a price that is reasonable.
evildutchmanswife 7 months ago
@evildutchmanswife
there are only 'strict rules & regulations' on products produced organically. The term 'natural' has never been regulated by the usda, except in meat/poultry. Whole foods market and Trader joes both determine their own standards for what they consider to be "all natural", what is 'not negotiable' about that? The two companies and their products are compared all the time because they are direct competitors of one another.
jeffread 7 months ago

Greenvegan828 10 months ago
Whole foods does not contain preservatives unlike Joe's. That's the big difference for me. Shopping from both places is better when u know exactly what u want to eat.

@PhotonicDoctor actually, anything with the trader joe's label on it contains no artificial preservatives or rbht.
cloudseraph 9 months ago
try comparing whole foods brand vs. trader joes brand. That seems to make more sense. when you compare "generic" vs. "brand name" the generic will always be the least expensive. Honestly for comparable quality whole foods private label "365" prices are quite competitive. At whole foods you know exactly what you are getting and where it came from.
petersenjason 11 months ago

@Vampirate76 because Trader Joe's almost exclusively carries private labels. Very rarely do they buy outside of their own name.
wekabord 7 months ago
@wekabord More Whole Foods-carried items seem to be making their way into Trader Joe's. So almost exclusively isn't entirely. Plus, Whole Foods also has a very large and prominent line of of private labels. (Most that I've tried are good too). Seems tough to penalize them for carrying more external options. Comparing prices on items in common, or private label vs. private label would be far more constructive and inisghtful.

How can a store that size be out of rice?
owlcu 1 year ago

Plus, Trader Joes runs out of stuff ALL THE TIME. its a quirky company that succeeds by keeping the prices as low as possible, but that means small stores with limited storage. you have to get there early to get everything you need, and that can be a pain for those who avoid the mornings (such as myself)
egreene 1 year ago
This seems rather bias to trader joes, and I say that as a fan of both stores.
Sometimes, Whole Foods has the cheaper option. Example; soymilk. I can get 3 things of soy milk for 5 bucks at HF, and it's in a special container that holds for months if left sealed; unless prices have changed since I haven't found something as cheap at TJ.
As well, TJ charges a pretty penny for tea; bagged tea. I can go and get bulk, whole leaf teas at WF.
Both stores have things they're better at. *shrugs*

razorbladekissss 1 year ago
I just started working at Whole Foods, and they told us that Trader Joe's doesn't have the same strict rules that we have. At Whole Foods, we don't sell anything that has artificial flavorings/colorings or hydrogenated (and partially hydrogenated) fats and oils. Trader Joe's is cheaper because of their lower standards for the things that they sell. Lots of stuff at Trader Joe's has "Red 40" and crap like that in it, hence the cheaper prices.
andiebendie12 1 year ago
@andiebendie12 - You're being fed biased misinformation. What they're calling "strict rules" are actually not "rules," nor are they "strict." Many products at Whole Foods have artificial coloring and flavor as well as hydrogenated fats and oils, so that's not true. So much for the "higher" standards. Prices are not dictated by standards but by the decisions stores make re: suppliers, shipping, order size, packaging, displays, types of payments accepted, store features, decor, etc.,
wheresmylife 1 year ago
@andiebendie12 Your wrong. Tj's has no artificial dye, preservatives, GMSO. or MSG in any of their private labeled products. They are cheaper because they contract directly with the manufacturer. No middle man.
lame54 1 year ago
@andiebendie12 that is simply NOT TRUE on all accounts- I am here to tell you that if it has the trader joes name on it, there is nothing artificial, genetically modified, or "not real" in it. TJS food is actually a higher standard BECAUSE of this, and no taste or quality is compromised. Get your facts right before you start spewing lies.
lmurdah 1 year ago
@andiebendie12 - That's a lie and Whole Foods is also able to sell Cloned Cow meat that was approved by the FDA and they admit that they don't have to tell you or else they would label their meats... "Not from Cloned Beef" and they will not do that. I always found artificial things and GMO foods at whole foods so that response of yours is invalid. Whole Foods won't ever get my money ever again...

Something to consider:
Most of prepackaged stuff at Joe's is just rebranded with there logo. For example the Stacys chips are the same company that makes the Joes pita chips. However they might slightly change the recipe for Trader Joes.
On a side note:
I bought some olive oil and red wine viniger dressing at trader joes today and it was absolutely awful. aftertaste was a beast! A warning...

That's our worst salad dressing; not many people buy it, but for some reason they decide to continue carrying it.
Some of our best salad dressings:
Champagne Pear Vinaigrette (low in fat, high in flavor), Balsamic Vinaigrette, Goddess Dressing, Greek Feta Dressing, Spicy Asian Style Peanut Vinaigrette.
We used to carry REAL Caesar dressing (you know, the kind with anchovy paste), but again it was discontinued because people don't know what's good!

That said, we generally have the best price on most items. You just have to be aware of the size vs. price that you are paying for on things you would normally get somewhere else.
It's misleading because Trader Joe's doesn't put price-per-ounce information on their signs.

TheReapersSon 9 months ago
The thing about Trader Joe's (And I work there), is that some of the prices are misleading. The initial price might be lower, but the package sizes are less than comparable brands (even the same product that 's just private labeled). So sometimes, even though you are getting a smaller, more manageable package, you are actually paying more per ounce than you would normally pay if you were to buy from somewhere else.

The difference between employees at TJ vs WF is night and day. TJ cashiers are much more real and friendly for the most part. jessieliu6121996 2 years ago

I should know .. I work there.
Please don't lie

Trader Joe's does not and can not guarentee that their products to not contain GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms). Whole Foods does, they also refuse to carry any products with artificial colorings, flavorings, sweeteners, etc. They absolutely don't allow any antibiotics or hormones in their meats, seafood or dairy. So maybe that's why you're getting those bad dreams....

Actually, anything with TJ's private label is free of GMO's. Also there's no artificial additives or preservatives. The dairy is hormone free, too.

@Truthee1 You are quoting a starting pay(reviews and raises every six months) and you are forgetting the benefits.
Medical, dental, eye and a retirement package(for part time employees).
No need to put WF or TJ's down, there is a place for both of them.

sleeplesseye is right. BUY from local farmers and STAY out of whole foods. The CEO is a crook!

Whole Foods sandwiches rock. I love the Caprese Classico.

why wasn't this a comparison of Whole Foods Private Label items vs.

^_^ the only problem is that I don't have a cooler yet to keep the frozen foods cold while I go to the other store, my frozen vegetables were nearly cooked when I got outta whole foods! lol

Not 365....

Why wouldn't you compare Whole Foods Private Label brands to the national brands at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's Private Label brand to national brands at Trader Joe's?
jayejoseph 2 years ago 4
Someone didn't do her homework...Seriously. This is NOT an apples-to-apples comparison. She should be comparing Trader Joe's with WFM's 365 brand. Otherwise, what's the point?

Exactly.

you are right..but i think she wanted to make a point that trader's Joe is cheaper than whole food which is true
