No, Gedda does NOT "own" this aria! While he does his expected great job, this aria, to be really effective & heart-wrenching, must be sung by an Italian - Lanza, Gigli, Pavarotti, DiStefano.
People like Pavarotti so much because he had a charisma that others tenors of his generation did not have. Being an opera singer is not only about vocal technique and correct period styling etc its also about excitement and connecting with people, it s about communication and thats what made Pavarotti so famous.
A stunningly great performance by a really immortal tenor. While I agree that Gedda had(may still have) fantastic top notes the high b natural is not in the score even as an optional note. It was allowed by Cilea after Gigli--who had a great b--discussed its use with Cilea. The high note actually detracts from the mood of the aria one of the most beautiful in the repertoire. The role of Federico was created by Enrico Caruso in his early years.
I really hate these endless "this tenor's better than that tenor" stuff. Nicolai Gedda is an extraordinary tenor. While Pavarotti's sweetness and lyricism are remarkable, Gedda has the same kind of heart and emotion, coupled with an remarkable technique and power. I LOVE THEM ALL, and Gedda should receive more recognition for his remarkable voice and artistry. Breathtaking.
I'd like to respond jcmcpr. People "Like the Pavarotti so much" because he was a wonderful singer, and was a joy to watch. He had a sparkling personality. He wasn't the greatest tenor that ever lived. But he was on a list of them, in many of our opinions. As for Gedda, he could easily be on a list of the great tenors of all time because he was. I don't consider any of the greats better than the others. They are all a joy to me but each different than the others. Bravo to them all!
@jcmcpr - we love each singer for all sorts of reasons. It is not a contest. Clearly Gedda is an incredible singer, and he rocks this aria. Each singer had some rep. he owned, and clealy Gedda is a master of this aria.
@jcmcpr Yes, sometimes Gedda is better singer, but Pavarotti is much more than a performer, and everyone realize this. Let's don't compare artists, no need, and is impossible.
You say that Gedda is a better singer than Pavarotti, then you say that it's impossible to compare artists.
Gedda and Pavarotti both got where they were by looking up to better artists for guidance and inspiration, and by the hard work of their own self-criticism and close scrutiny of their teachers, which I know from reading their autobiographies. Comparisons are necessary for great artists to exist, they are great for their ability and desire to be more than mediocre.
You compared Gedda and Pav, both artists, and then said there is no need to compare artists & that it's impossible. I disagree, and believe you are saying that to appear wise & to be liked by everyone, not because of any grounding in reality. I am also saying that the belief that artists cannot be compared is the opinion of one who doesn't listen with a critical (or even an attentive) ear. When two things are different, they can be compared, because they aren't the same.
Yes,I can see that. Pav does have a lighter instrument in his vids than Gedda at this age--and this role is a more light lyric role, believe it or not. I would have liked to see Gedda sing this when he was a bit younger, like during the days when he sang Almaviva. Regardless, his grasp stylistically of a verismo song seems pretty convincing. I like em both! I certainly don't think Gedda's singing is "technically poor" anymore than anyone else might think Pav to be "unmusical."
his singing is hysterical!people are writting here good comments(!) he is singing note by note,pushing-roaring sound and no pianissimo.Musically and technically poor!
The place is Berlin, the date August 25th. it was the opening ceremony for the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung - Consumer Electronics Trade Fair). The Conductor was Gerd Albrecht. The same evening saw Pilar Lorengar (together with Gedda in the Butterfly-Love-Duet) and the young Agnes Baltsa. More Informations about Gedda? Don´t hesitate to contact me. I´ve written a whole biography about him.
Grandissimus Gedda!!!! I agree, though, about high B, which is here ideally suited for Gedda's voice. I don't know any other tenor with such huge volume in the upper register, and with such voluminous pianissimos in high notes! Long live the King of singing!
Passionate and beautiful as always. Would have liked to have heard the high B at the end, considering he probably has the easiest and most beautiful upper registers of all tenors in recent history.
Holy tenor hair, batman. Wow, Gedda has one of the most stable, low larynxes I have ever seen! Beautifully, masterfully done. What's up with that tie, though. Hoy cute. And what orcheestra is this. At first, I thought it was my high school orcheatra but I think it was just the bad flute.
Eccezionale!!!!!!una tecnica Esemplare...grazie

Well, I think Nicolai was a little bit past his "sell by " date when he did this.
He is obviously relying on his great technique to get the piece across. Iv'e heard him
sing with far more panache and confidence than this. Think back to the 50s and 60s
That's when you heard the man at the top.

The 10 best tenors of all time: 1. Björling
2. Caruso 3. Gigli 4. Domingo 5. Corelli 6. Pavarotti 7. Carerras 8. Aragall 9. Di Stefano 10. Gedda

what about Mario Del Monaco?
skilgan 4 years ago 2
I see your point. Actually I forgot about him, sorry, he should be in the 9th place instead of Di Stefano.
kl2000kl 4 years ago
Now imagine this, a combination of Jussi Bjorling's beautiful technique and vibrato and Mario del Monaco's power and dramatic presence
skilgan 4 years ago
What about Wunderlich? He's certainly in the first 5!!!
turbofreddy 4 years ago
ALFREDO KRAUS was among the 10 best tenors of all times ,so either we must drop one tenor or we can say the best 11 tenors!
smartsteve 3 years ago
Where is Fritz Wunderlich? Or Jon Weaving? or the quintessential Jon Vickers?!
It may be just me, but I find little interesting or magical in Caruso's voice. Does anyone have an opinion?
And Carerras was a beautiful lyric in his day, but like many tenors preferred to bleat out notes like a foghorn as a dramatic/ spinto/ helden.
Domingo should be higher I feel as he, out of the list, has quite easily the most versatility as both a musician and performer.

so as you want to say all Russian geniuses are outside your "list"? ))) its amazing, this really shows how good you are at opera
